Flipflops : what are your thoughts?

I am not probably the right person as I never wear them. They are uncomfortable for me. But now everything is OK, depending on preferences.

MIRJANA Yes I agree, of course it is okay to wear them. Not judging here, just wondering if people believe they can up the 'stylishness' of an outfit, as in the heading mentioned above for Jennifer Aniston's outfit. I am wondering if I wear my Ipanema beach flops will my outfit really look cool? I am not that convinced. Yes not that comfortable for sure. I think my thin ankles look better in a strap. In a city having your feet so fully exposed could be a bit dangerous for your digits. Also the younger ones are not keen on exposing their toes. So who is it cool to? Do people just wear them because they easy to slip on and off or are they really worn as a fashion statement? Btw leather thongs are thongs and not flipflops imo.

Well they are a big trend right now - and The Row, for example, can sell you a pair for $600Cdn if you want. To me they are the ultimate in casual, which is interesting paired with a dressier bottom. I like the look, honestly. That said, I'm not comfortable enough with the appearance of my left foot to let it be quite that exposed . Sure, at the lake, at home etc, not a problem, but as a style statement? Wish I could do it, but not for me. I think it looks particularly good with long wide pants. They also are terrible for foot health (support) , so there's that to consider too.

LJP - Yes! You giving me a perspective I had not thought about. Juxtaposition! One of my Ipenamas is in a copper colour, which actually would look suitably modern with my brown wide legs. I have seen The Row flops. Ouch 600 Dollars!. I have not worn mine this year, even to the beach, because of the need for arch support in recent times. I did wear them a lot in the early 00s.

I think some look better than others. I have seen pics of the more polished looking ones as opposed to the rubber ones. I can see a sleek pair under flowy pants for instance, being some sort of fashion statement.

After years of wearing them all summer, I don't really wear them anymore. I don't like the flopping

I wear them to get a pedicure. Period. Even around the house I wear Archie slides for my indoor summer shoes (and Taos wool clogs in the winter inside). I was baffled to see they are trending fashion wise now! Not a trend I'll buy into, but mostly because I find them infinitely uncomfortable and unsupportive!

Flip flops were so trendy this year. I bought a pair of silver ones, hoping it will be a quick update to a dinner outfit on vacations, easy to pack. Got horrible blisters in 5 minutes walking in them.

I like the leather ones in color, metallic or black and think it’s a fast way of making a summer outfit look cool and casual. Wish they were comfortable for me but flip flops don’t usually fit me well.

ANDIB Even when wearing them for a pedi is problematic for me. If the paint is still wet you really have to navigate and 'ease' into the thong. A slide will still be easier for me. Baffled I was too but I am starting to re-imagine this. I definitely wore them in the early 00s, but not really as a considered part of my outfit, that was just what everybody wore.

I have three types of flipflops I wear now. I wear the cheap, thin ones from CVS in the backyard. My flipflops are awful looking, but I don’t care. The Oofos are comfortable for walking around in, and I’d wear these with shorts or cropped pants. The Clarks are less comfy, but not bad. I have worn these with a dress. Until I developed my recent foot problem (loss of fat from the bottom of my foot) I wore Bernardo sandals. They are just beautiful. I would recommend them to anyone without foot problems. I have their flipflop style in lots of colors. They are going unworn this summer, and probably forever.

I personally like the casual vibe they can add to a summer outfit. However, the very flimsy, thinned sole rubber ones would be a no-go for my feet. I did have a nice pair of Spenco flip-flops that had a supportive foot bed (See photo below) but they were donated recently due to my foot arthritis issues.

JAILEEN I really like #3 with the cute dots and stripes! The brown leather ones reminded me of a similar pair I had in the early 00s. Is it possible your foot problems came about from wearing flip-flops often? I developed plantar fasciitis from wearing flat plastic slides (shower shoes) on my wooden floors. I healed it by wearing supportive shoes inside all winter. It is fine now but if I walk fairly short distances in totally flat shoes it starts flaring up again.

Lise, there are rubber flip flops, and pretty thong sandals, IMO. The former is very casual, and beachy to my eye (Cape Town beachy - where we used to live!). The latter can look dressier. Very '90s

I always have flip flops and leather thongs. The thongs are from Jack Rogers and great for summer wear with summer skirts.

Lise, the podiatrist said the problem is not uncommon among old ladies. My feet don’t hurt right now, but if I were to wear “bad” shoes, I could make them hurt again. I recently wore a pair of Tevas to walk the dog and my foot hurt the next day. So I’ve been wearing Crocs recovery slides for short dog walks lately, and they’ve been fine.

I love the Clarks, too. I thought they were just striped, and was surprised to see the polka dots.

Jaileen Those Tevas look so comfortable. Just shows how unpredictable shoes can be.

LISE, JAILEEN- I just bought those exact same Tevas in that colour too about a month or so ago, and my feet are very happy in them. I guess it just depends on the different issues troubling our feet. Everyone is so individual.

I am Team Flipflops Forevah!! I wear the cheap rubber ones (third row from top, far right, plus on my feet) at home all the time in the summer, and I have a huge collection (including 2 new pair of Birkenstocks that loosely fit the definition, top row right) that I wear out and about. Check it out!!

Note that I have the Clark's (second row from top) in four colors and every time I take them on vacation I run into other women wearing the same ones, and we get to bond about how comfy they are and how much we love them.

In New Zealand everyone wears them. We are an island nation after all. I have a nice gold pair, Ipanema or similar, which meet my need for a tiny hint of sass even in ordinary flip-flops (or jandals as we call them here, from “Japanese sandals”). I did have 2 fancier pairs with sequins on from Bali also but both broke on the soles eventually.
I wouldn’t wear them to walk very far, I have more supportive sandals for that. Fancier ones are often fashion-forward here but possibly more just now.

How strictly are we defining “flip flops”? Are these two below qualifying? They’re leather but casual. I am especially enjoying them this year since they seem to be trending and they’re comfortable.

I don’t do the rubber ones because I haven’t found them very comfortable, but I do have a pair of Sanuks that are very comfortable — I mostly wear them for around-the-house or beach shoes, but they also go with me on every trip! I’m wearing them right now.

I don't like the thong between my toes and my feet feel very exposed in them. That said, Havianas are everywhere here. I wear them if I am getting a pedicure and that's it. I would love to see The Row's version in person just to see if it really adds anything style wise or if they are just for signaling purposes .

I have a pair of old Fitflops that I wear as summer shoes in. the house (easy on and off) but I don't otherwise own any. I think they can be attractive because the V shape is flattering to many foot and ankle shapes. Personally, I need more support and cushioning than the very flat versions and some of the leather ones can give blisters between toes, so I am wary about the style. But I wouldn't rule it out entirely. Both for juxtaposition and for the reasons Irina gave -- in metallic, they could be a great travel option.

What Jenni said - we call them jandals and they are very common here, although maybe less common due to the rise of Birkenstocks and pool slides.

I loved havaianas for years but they irritate my foot. So I no longer wear thong style sandals or flip flops.

I have seen the images of the Row ones, and some of the influencers wearing this look. It can look great! And Jennifer Aniston has that effortless natural cool casual look about her so she can really carry it off. I think on another celebrity it might not work as well.

I prefer wearing Birkenstocks for the support to flat rubber flipflops. The Birkenstock EVAs are waterproof and very practical for the beach. I would wear the Birkenstock that are the same design as flipflops that Ms Mary has - they look great!
