Fashion vs. home decor

There are so many of you here that are so stylish, I was wondering if your homes are also put together so nicely as well? I have to say that my home does mirror my fashion sense in that I have flashes of good style but mostly it's just a struggle and not-quite-right.

What about you? Do you spend your energy on fashion or home decor or both?

I spend my energy on fashion more than home decor. I feel like while I'm still renting, I don't want to start doing a lot of decorating, just to take it down when I move in a year or 2. Plus I have white/off-white walls that I can't pain or change, and that has seemed to put a damper on my decorating.

I have very little interest in Home decor! Our house is almost exclusively furnished from Ikea, and I have never bought anything decorative. If it wasn't for the dear relatives who are also our landlords, who visit sometimes and paint part of our house it would look pretty bad. Any interest I do have is functional. I am getting a new gas cooktop soon, and looking forward to having one without plastic knobs that melt!

Ha, good topic, I wonder that too. We own, or rather the bank does, lol, and when we moved in 3 years ago, I decorated every room.

I work full-time and now am more interested in my clothes. Sometimes I wonder if my house is slipping in style

I have studied architecture and interior design (I pretty much love all kinds of design), so after we bought our house 6 years ago, I definitely spent some time and effort on the decor of our home. But there are some major renovation projects we want to do in the next couple of years (kitchen, baths, refacing a big fireplace, etc., etc.) so I'm holding off on any significant home decor purchases. Right now I'm definitely more into dressing myself than my home. But I'd have to say that our home syle and my personal style definitely have similarities.

When we first moved in (and had no kids - meaning lots of free time, extra income and no worries about things getting ruined) we decorated quite a bit. Not a palace, but decent quality, mixture of antiques and new, style seems to flow together. I spent a good deal of time decorating the kids' rooms (only to have them end up with toy decor) and recently renovated our finished basement (because of a flood) and am quite happy with it. That said, now it's 9 years from when we started and the first bits look shabby and in need of freshening and/or replacing/repainting and we've never fully done our Master bedroom. We have major renovations we'd love to do (Kitchen, all baths), but no budget for them at the moment.

We have a lot of collections and art in our house (lots of African art, photography, random etchings and prints) and also like mid century and industrial age antiques. House is ever changing and on the maximal side (not one of those that like clutter free).
We need a new couch but have been debating forever on what style.
Also I would like to remodel bathroom/closet but we may not stay here forever so putting it off.
My house is way more boho than I dress.

I would say my home probably does reflect my dress style. It is quite minimal. my walls are white and flooring is white. I have a lot of neutrals and accent them with colored cushions, ornaments, prints etc. However once I have room looking the way I want, it tends to stay that way for a long time. I am not one for constantly moving furniture, changing cusions, etc. I think it comes down to the fact that I feel good in certain type of space.

Let me put it this way: Every room in my house is painted a different bold color! The living room is purple, kitchen/dining room are gold, master bedroom is green, woman cave is dark gray, man cave is blue, and the master bath is lavender. (The second bathroom is awaiting and update and still has the original wallpaper!) So yes, I'd say my home decor reflects my style of dress!

I have always been interested in home decor and I've definitely spent a good amount of energy on the house over the years.

This is a great question. There are definite similarities between my fashion sense and my home decorating style. I tend to alternate between home decorating phases and fashion phases. 2008-2010 were home improvement years and 2011-2012 have been fashion improvement years! We have an old house (about 100 years) that is slooowly getting to the point where I can rest (one more major bathroom renovation and maybe a kitchen expansion to go) and feel like we're more or less "done." But I've also come to accept that both my home decor and closet will need constant tweaking over time.

I think the fashion and home decor genes are very closely aligned. Here's a post on how my fashion sense mimics my home decor:

Hah! Guilty! My ongoing interest in interior design is WAY more fascinating to me than my own personal attire. I have fully decorated and accessorized and renovated several homes and I just LOVE it! And there are definite similarities between my home and my wardrobe, as I am totally enthralled with gloriously intense, rich colors and, like MaryK, I am not embarrassed to say that every room in my home has a different bold color. (of course they all work well together and I carry over these colors into the other rooms as accessories and such)

As I write this, I am wondering if my lack of desire in the fashion area has to do with a lower sense of self-esteem about myself vs. my home. Hmmm...lots to think of...

My commitment to YLF began because I realilzed that I did not know enough about personal style and how to build a satisfying wardrobe...and slowly I am getting up to speed. Maybe someday my personal fashion sense will equal my interior design sense. That would really please me.

i think my home reflects me, my style and the love of color!....this pic is my living room area and it just happen to be taken on my birthday...hence the balloons, even they are color coordinated

I see a lot of you like color. Me too. I just picked up a heavily discounted huge wool rug that's got all kinds of zig zaggy lines in several of my favorite colors (kiwi, pumpkin, teal, etc) and am working off that in my living room redo.

If they have a stain repellent finish, it will be ruined by water washing. That is often why they say dry clean. If you don't care about the stain resistance, I would probably wash them. I'm not saying I know for sure they are stain repellent, just that sometimes that is why cotton is to be dry cleaned.
