Fall Outfit Challenge: Rarely Worn Items

My challenge prompt is to wear and evaluate some of my rarely worn items. I plan to wear each item 6 times this season and try to tweak the styling with each wear. Committing to posting my progress will help me by motivating me and getting feedback. I've started with two items that are 4/5 years old and don't have many wears. Both items have received positive comments in the past but I just don't seem to reach for them. I know tunics are out of style but I still plan to wear and enjoy them and it has been difficult to style the vest because of it's volume. Suggestions for improvement are really helpful for me.

I really like the striped one Bonnie! I think that could be styled with most bottoms actually.
My challenge is similar with mostly older clothing and I posted a tunic on SarahD8’s original post yesterday. I wonder if it’s because they are shorter garments and the fashion trend is for midis that they feel a bit wrong to us? Mine felt slightly cutesy yesterday.

Jenni NZ: Thank you. I still see tunics for sale on many online sites, so I think they are still favored by many fans. I'm trying to wear some of my older unworn items because I have had a tendency to over buy in the past. The striped tunic is versatile and makes a great layering piece.

taylor and Angie: Thank you so much for your kind comments. I'm glad to hear tunics are still in. I wore outfit #1 to lunch yesterday and #2 today for a quiet day at home. I have a busy week coming up.

Both outfits are brilliant and I love the rarely worn items. The vest is one of my favourites - really chic and cool and fantastic with the docs. The necklace provides a beautiful accent here. The shirt in no 2 is lovely with the white jeans and shoes echoing the white buttons on the shirt. Effective and super fresh.

rachylou: Thank you. Both the button tunic and oversized vest are kind of statements all by themselves so that makes sense.

lyn67: Thank you and you are making me think which is a good thing. The problem with the tunic is that I had never tried it with white jeans before and that made all the difference. Previous attempts were with blues and blacks which were blah or too contrasty. The problem with the vest is its volume and color. It really needs a fitted layering piece and this is the only one I have found that works. It's also a heavier weight and works for cool, not warm or cold days. But now that I've used SarahD8 prompt challenge to work with these rarely worn items, I'm perfectly OK with wearing them exactly this way for the rest of the season. My goal is 5 more times until winter.

Well I was pleased to hear Angie say that tunics are still in style too. They were the basis of my wardrobe since probably 2010 so after that long I have been a bit tired of them and trying to mix it up. I have edited out quite a few in the past two years but still own about 8 or 9 depending on how they are classified. A couple might be more properly called long tops.
And I do still like the ones I have kept. I think some of them really suit my shape.
I thought the same as you, that they were a bit out of style, but like you I still see lots of women in them and still see some at retail although I steer clear personally due to overdose in the past!

These are both terrific outfits on you, Bonnie! I especially like #1.

I don't think tunics will ever entirely be "out of style" because so many women appreciate them and find them useful. It is true, they work better with narrow bottoms than with wider bottoms (on the whole) but narrow bottoms are a real classic and they'll always be available, I expect.

Suz: Thank you for chiming in. You are right about tunics being useful for many bodies and they are so comfortable especially with stretchy bottoms. I've stopped buying them but I'm wearing the ones I have casually.

I think you did a good job of styling both outfits. I especially like #1 with the boots. I'll be interested in following your progress and what you decide about these pieces at the end of your challenge.

Late to the party but wanted to say that I really like these outfits, bonnie, especially the first one! I am also a fellow tunic lover so am glad they are not going away. Great that you've got a couple of go-to outfits sorted for fall!
