Exchange for mini-skirt - Keep or return?

We went today to exchange the mini-skirt, which was a birthday present. You can see pictures in the thread below.

I was really hopeful when we started looking, but it was difficult to get another skirt that fit. I think I tried every skirt in the shop on and mostly they didn't fit at all. I think their cuts are strange, not quite right for my body type. I took the best skirt home with me so you can have a look at it to help me decide if this is the one I should keep.

What do you think? I like the length and the color is versatile, because navy goes with almost everything I own. But I'm not sure about the pleats at the front. And it seems to pull again in the pictures, it creases. The problem is, I had to choose something now, because obviously you have to exchange an item in a certain time frame. I couldn't really wait til they have something I like better. I could hold on to this one and exchange it when they get some new skirts in, but I just don't know. Do you think I should keep it? My friends said the skirt was okay. By the way, they also thought the first skirt too short when they saw me in it.

I'm glad that they agreed that the first skirt was too short! I don't think this one is worth keeping, the creasing shows that it just doesn't fit right. I would exchange it again when they have a new selection.

Hm...maybe it's my monitor, but I don't see creasing. Which photo, Kate?

Sarah, you can see on both photos that it creases slightly. I didn't see it in the store, just now when I took the pictures.

I think I see the creasing in the first picture. Is it below the hand that is on your hip? If so, and if you can't smooth that out, then I too would say return. You should be able to return it for store credit, right? That way you CAN go back when they have new skirts in stock (or for that matter, something totally different).

Yep, it creases at the sides. Smoothing it out isn't really possible, seems like I really have to return it. *sigh* It don't think they do store credit, actually. It says you can return it for exchange or refund.

I just went through this with a skirt of my own. Had it tailored and that didn't quite fix it, either. It's on it's way to Mary K, actually Sometimes you just have to walk away if it doesn't fit.

Astrid, I'm not keen on it. It looks much better than the skirt before, but the thing with creasing would be a big problem for me. Personally, I'm not keen on Zara at all, although I know people love it and Angie does too, my sister always comes back with some great finds, but I must have some bad luck as anything I had ever bought there was not made of good, quality fabric. So, I'm not surprised you notice the issue with creasing.
I deeply believe you can never look stylish if the outfit makes you self-conscious and is the one you have to compromise with. After all, style is more about confidence than anything else as I see it, and thinking that you need to keep fixing it all the time has no touching points with confidence at all. If you have any doubts, get that refund. It's a good news German stores do it, I thought they don't

Astrid, a lot of time when stores say they do refunds, they mean that they will refund your credit card or they will refund you in the form of a store credit. So you might be able to get that credit!

I personally am having a lot of trouble assessing the skirt because the photo is really dark on my monitor, so I can't see a lot of detail. I think I see some creasing, but I'm not positive. If you could lighten up the photo, that would help.

Can I be blunt? Considering this was a gift, I think this return issue is like a "one time exchange" type of scenario. Are your friends going to be ok if you end up getting something else? Are they expecting to see this skirt on you? I would say keep it.

For anyone who can't see the creasing, try brightening your screen and adjusting the angle. Its certainly there.

Astrid, when the friends said the skirt was ok, was is a "well, I guess this one is ok..." or a "sweet, we found one that's ok!" ??? Zap is right that they could be offended if you return it again, but from what you said I had assumed that they weren't thrilled with this skirt and were also hoping you could find something you really like.

Thanks Kate--I just realized my brightness was way low (I blame the cats walking over the keyboard). I brightened it up, and now I can see the creasing. I wonder if wearing a sweater outside of the skirt, instead of something tucked in, would help at all. It almost looks to me like the creasing is from sitting down rather than the skirt being too tight.

Now that you went with your friends to do the return, do you have some kind of receipt you can use for purposes of exchange? If so, I would probably just go to the store and not mention it to them unless they ended up asking.

Ellie, I'm not that keen on Zara myself, I have a hard time finding something that fits there. But since they bought the present there, I can't do anything about it.

Steph, it could be that the refund comes in a credit store card, I have no idea! Because I don't normally shop there I have no experience with it.

As for the return issue, that would be alright. My friends weren't totally assured of the skirt, it just was the best one of the many I tried on! I think I really had every skirt in the shop on once. We were there a long time and not really satisfied with the whole thing.

Edit: Yes, I have the receipt. But they would know it anyway if I don't wear this one. But that's okay, I could definitely do the next exchange alone. And the creasing isn't really from sitting or anything, it looks like a fitting issue, again.

I've had the same experience of not reallly finding anything I truly liked quality or fit wise at H&M. But I own several dresses (off eBay) by them that I love, so I find it odd. I suppose sometimes you just come up empty handed. Maybe next season will be full of treasures to choose from!

Astrid, would your friends be hurt if you went back and got a top or a jacket or a pair of pants? I'm just wondering if there might be something else for you at the store that isn't a skirt.

Steph, I think I should stay with a skirt. My friends wear skirts almost all the time and when I got to know them I was always in jeans. They succeeded in making me accept that I look good in skirts (actually better) and to wear them more often. So exchanging the skirt for another one is okay, but I don't know about getting something else instead. Then the idea behind the present would be completely lost.

Oh, that makes sense. In that case, hopefully you can get a store credit for the skirt and then wait until you find something you really like!

One more question, does the skirt have the lining? Looking at the creases I'd say it does not.
I'd recommend exchanging it for some scarf, belt, or handbag. If I remember well, you were after a handbag, and Zara does some nice ones, that's the only thing from there that did not disappoint me.

Astrid I like the skirt but I don't think you'ld be happy with the way it fits. I can see the creases and I think you would be settling if you kept it. It looks like the side pockets stick out also? How disappointing and frustrating for you! I would probably go with the store credit if you think you can do that without your friends minding.
