Engagement party ensemble 6.10.23

After weeks of fussing over this party and my outfit , this is what I ended up in . Honestly ? I didn’t love it . The pants ended up too short - my fault - and I was self conscious of the line of my Spanx possibly showing through the leg of my pants all night . I don’t know what possessed me to wear them as I never do under pants . I didn’t love my new shoes here either. They were perfectly comfortable , but ….the were too design-y for this outfit .

I suppose it was inevitable , considering my ambivalence about the party , and maybe I created my own issues with the outfit . I experimented with my hair and pushed it up into a faux-hawk ish thing , which I liked . My husband informed me I’ve aged better than the other women in our group that we haven’t seen in awhile , so that was one positive thing, lol.

I think this pant and top combo will be worn with sneakers and a denim jacket or flat black sandals and a sweater if I ever wear it again . I just felt a little too over done with colour and all of the individual elements here . Oh well , lesson learned !

Looks great to my eye. Maybe it’s not entirely about the outfit, Lisa, you should definitely wear this set again and see how you feel.

I think you look beautiful. I love each element on its own and all of it together! The hair is fab, the earrings, the shoes, the set, the jacket, the bag...and yay for compliments from the spouse.

I hope you managed to have some fun at this very strange event and did not feel too exploited. Hope you got off with some friends for a gab fest and maybe there were good eats?

I like your hair like this, and I like the sound of this 2 piece with flat sandals, that is how I would wear it. Sneakers and a denim jacket also sound good. Yay for complimentary husbands.

Honestly, I know that whenever I’ve stressed over what to wear to something I don’t really what it go to, I end up with something that I don’t really love….but than later I’ll wear it to something else and feel just fine

Me (looking at the photos before reading the post): "YESSSSS!!! LISA LOOKS NEW WAVE/PUNKROCK AMAZING".

Spanx will ruin most outfits, not because anyone can see it, but because the wearer is never allowed to forget it is there, gripping and squeezing and making the wearer doubt themselves.

Here are all the things I love about this lewk:

1) The jacket is a perfect juxtaposition: it looks like a bomber, but it's a little drapey and a little feminine, and the botanical print is just right, AND the colors make you glow.

2) The pantsuit is a perfect blend of dressed up, and casual "What, this? I just threw this on, and didn't think too much about it".

3) The pant length and the shoes show the delicacy of your bone structure.

4) The shoes have a Spanish vibe.

5) Your scrunchy faux-hawk really leans into the Spain-vibe as well.

You look insouciant and cool, like a Lost Boy wandered into the garden party and is going to sign autographs later.

From your description, I wasn’t expecting to be wowed with the pics, but I love your look in the photos! However I know that photos only tell part of the story and you need to feel good! I think the shoes look great and elevated the outfit to an occasion, but maybe dressing it down for everyday with sneakers may indeed feel more your vibe. Either way, I wonder if your feelings about the event itself may have contributed to your emotional state about the outfit — I have definitely been in that position before! You do look fantastic, I’m sure your husband is totally correct in his observation!

Thank you all - I know my story of woe is a bit much ;). It was a jaw-dropping party. Probably 75 people there in one of the most fabulous houses and river properties I’ve ever been in . A whole ‘nother level of wealth there . I’m sure glad I was in flats as we were standing all of the evening on a flat stoned landscaped patio on the river bank . It was really interesting to see what the young women wore : midi length satiny slip dresses in all colours with square toed strappy high heeled sandals . Women my age were in a mix of dresses , mostly . I’m glad I brought a jacket as it was cool and breezy later in the evening - but …..no bugs !! Which is a miracle considering the house is right on the river .

Carol - a better way to describe my shoes is “not clean -lined “ . I think I would have preferred a simpler shoe as this one has everything , lol. Pleated leather , cross ankle straps , cut outs , etc . The shoes I covet right now are not being reproduced at a mid-price point . It’s all super high end and I guess too weird to risk producing for the mass market , haha. Even the Everlane Day flat knocked off at a lower Cdn price would be great but again it’s too niche of a look I guess .

I need to reiterate what others have said: You look fab. Truly! I think the oufit is amazing, you accessorize beautifully, I love the hair and your skin looks gorgeous! I am hoping this is an instance of not loving the event, thus not loving what you wore, because you should definitely try this outfit again to a different event!

I think your outfit look really fabulous on you. The colours are perfect for you. You look both elegant and modern. Great hair and makeup too! I totally understand the discomfort of pulling an outfit together, fussing over it and then not feeling comfortable in it. I am not sure why it happens but it usually happens (to me) when I am wearing something that I don't really love but am wearing an outfit to "fit in". When I pull something from my closet that I really want to wear and don't think about whether it works for the occasion/I wonder what others are wearing/will I be overdressed ...that's when I feel my best.

It’s always rather tricky to figure out what exactly to wear to these type of events, but I too, think your outfit looks chic and modern. Sounds like an interesting experience none the less. Always fun to see how the other half lives.

This looks authentic you, to me, and not a copy cat of anyone. It’s unique, without standing out as ‘kooky’ or out of place.

I love Mary Beth’s description and suggest you consider ‘Lost Boy’ as a monicker. I’ve always felt that some degree of gamine/athleticism aka tomboy is in your bones, and thus a part of an authentic way to dress.

I hope the food was good, and you found someone interesting to talk to…

Lisa you look amazing. I love everything about this. Your hair is perfection. The two price outfit and the jacket are meant to be wore together. I think that it was just the event itself. Sometimes when we stress over an event we become hyper focused on every little thing and don’t take in account the whole picture.

This is one of my favorite outfits on you of all times!

You look good! I don’t see “too over done”. I think when you take risks with fashion it’s easy to feel that way. I know I’ve felt that way a zillion times. I bet you stood out, in a good way, in a sea of “safe” slip dresses and heels.

YLF Lisa, I think it wasn't the outfit, but all the other silly things. And, really wasn't there anybody in whites, neither in blacks??? Was it because of some high end picties taken with all the crowd and for not messing up with the stark neutrals in them? Whites I can somehow rather understand for not stealing the spot from the bride to be (if she was wearing whites) but BLACKS??? Unless on a boat I think I would have still worn my blacks (If really wanted so) and just named it ...say a charcoal, if asked!:-) OMG!!!:-))

I think , wear again on less complicated occasions!

Also about shoes— I never noticed any problems with this outfit, but I hear what you are thinking about number of details. If you have occasions to wear the 2- piece outfit without topper, the shoes would add that touch of extra texture and detail. Or, maybe the cream jacket, since solid color.

Anyway, point, I think all the items are great mix-and- match pieces as well as a good outfit together.

I will echo everyone else - looks great! I'm sorry it didn't feel great though. I quite like the shoes with it, they sort of echo the pattern in the jacket, but it would be good with simpler shoes too. Love the two piece pants/top thing and hope you wear them again. Without the Spanx

Re the Spanx : I wear them under dresses because I cannot bear the feeling of my thighs touching one another. Spanx also makes for a cleaner line , if you will. I was a little concerned about the pants because they are SO lightweight and I hadn't had a chance to see how they'd perform if stuck to my leg in a breeze - if that makes sense). But yes, bad decision , lol.

The dress code was adhered to, that much I can say. There was one woman maybe a little older than me wearing a STUNNING black and white dress - which made me laugh. Funny, I never saw her again after that one sighting. The bride's family is Italian, and the food was ridiculous . All made by the bride's mother, apparently. I've never seen such a crazy amount of food for "appetizers and drinks" - it was a full-on dinner. I did not indulge

Jaime - my ideal shoe? Right now I'm obsessed with the mesh sock shoe from The Row. It's just so cool, and weird at the same time. Also, I don't know what I was talking about when I mentioned Everlane pricing . I went back to their site and it's not at all as high as I thought.
