Edwardian gentleman/woman naturalist

So for December I'm making more of an effort to follow my Edwardian gentleman naturalist stye descriptor. Here's a bit of a breakdown of what I mean: I want to look polished and professional, “gentlemanly” (even in dresses), a bit old fashioned (English countryside), but with a strong “oriental” influence (which was big in Edwardian times). I should look (and truly be able to) take a couple mile tromp through the woods at any given moment to collect samples while still looking a professional, polished, old-fashioned, and with a Asian influence.

Here are my two most successful looks so far:

1: I finally found a mens' vest that (more or less) fits - black trousers, cobalt tunic, black vest, black lace up booties, mixed metal lotus necklace, and big silver filigree hoop earrings.

2: The herringbone trousers you all advised me hem and to wear with snugger tops in this post were duly hemmed another an inch and a half. Worn with slim fitting navy cabled pullover and black buckle boots. Afghani necklace and ohm silver earrings for my eastern influence.

I'm really looking forward to makign more outfits with my vests, and am actively looking for a tweedy one, a navy one, etc...

I really like what you've done. I think it would be fun to add a scarf or cravat or necktie to the vests. Maybe a small cravat would not compete too much with the unique jewelry.

You are glowing, and how great to see you post! I love both of these outfits and think they have achieved your aims. They seem polished but not precious. The vest works really well! The jewellery is lovely on you, too.

I think both of these look really great and hit the mark on what you were going for. I love that you have really neat jewelry with interesting heritage. And I REALLY love the vest on you. I think it is such a great look. I just got a grey vest that I haven't had a chance to wear yet. I'm kind of obsessed with the idea of the old fashioned journalist look - with the white button down and vest... I can't wait to see what you do with your vests!

columbine, I do often wear scarves. I was actually thinking of trying a men's tie, but wondering if it'd be too costumey.

Oooh, SarahTheWhite, that sounds fun, I hope you post! I also have a grey wool vest that I wore a bit last year, but moths got to it over the winter, so it will get less wear this year (though some, until I replace).

lyn67, E has been a great influence for me! Maybe influence isn't the right word, as she hasn't changed my aesthetic, but more seeing her dress in a way that's quirky but not costumey and so right for her has reminded me that I could do that too (plus we do share quite a few sartorial passions despite our different ages, body types, coloring, etc.).

I think you're right though to include your fabulous jewelry or a beautiful scarf rather than an actual tie, say. The juxtaposition of the "intriguing lady" elements with the gentlemanly ones is key, I think. "Modern old- world" , if that's possible!

MuseumGal, I thought of you today when I saw the Frye sale on HauteLook: Their Melissa Riding laced boots in that gorgeous cognac leather were EXACTLY what I had in mind when I read your "Edwardian gentleman naturalist" description. Do check them out and see what you think! Not cheap, even on sale, but a solid investment.
