Edwardian gentleman or Janis Joplin?

I found this gorgeous silk peacock scarf for $20 at TJ Maxx over the weekend, so of course I had to wear it today. I wore plain black trousers, pullover, and oxfords to show off the scarf, added some pretty jewelry, and then threw on my teal velvet blazer. I thought I was doing a fine job of Edwardian Gentleman until I saw the pics and immediately thought, erm, I look like Janis Joplin! My original style descriptor was stealthy bohemian, and I was Janis for Halloween this year (last pic), so I suppose this shouldn't be a surpise. I was actually pretty happy with this outfit, either way you want to read it. Peace baby!

Love the scarf! I love peacock prints in general, and that one is spectacular! Looks especially smashing against the blue velvet.

Fab scarf. I think you need to tie it more like a cravat for the gentlemanly look. I love the Janis pic and love her.

I agree with AK; try tying the scarf if you want more of a gentlemanly vibe. But I like it either way.

Ooh. I like the colors of the scarf on you against a dark backdrop. I agree with AK. Have fun tying that gorgeous scarf various ways. As for your question; I bought a pair of sandals this year I wore with absolutely everything, and was pleasantly surprised to see they added a retro vibe. I added a few tops with retro prints because of this and have been enjoying somewhat of a style shift.

You say "Janis Joplin" like it's a bad thing...

I think you look fab! That is one seriously gorgeous scarf. I might wear it as you have it in #2, but with the loop a little looser and lower.

IMO, a reminder why descriptors should be guides and not definitive rules. maybe this isn't edwardian gentleman, but you look great, and totally rocking this outfit!

I know I should comment on your outfit, but your makeup takes my breath away. I wish with all my heart you could sit down with me and hold my hand while you taught me how to do my own makeup.

I have to agree with the others here. The colors and pattern are beautiful and you nailed the proportions. I had to go back and check out the make-up after reading Sterling's comment. The sign of great make-up is that you don't notice it until you look. Great job on that as well. Two thumbs up here.

The Janis peace-out is a totally hilarious shot. I love the drama of the peacock scarf, and you are looking super beautiful here in your post-doc days.

Actually, I'm getting more Joan Baez here, or Joni Mitchell.

Your look in #1 isn't reading Edwardian Gentleman to me, and his has a bit of the boho, but it's quite elegant. More Joan Baez at a booksigning, or Joni Mitchell at an Art Gallery. Either way, you look beautiful! And Janis Joplin is a natural for you!

Today I was trying to show off the pretty scarf, but in the future, I will definitely try tying it like a cravat as alaskagirl, Laura, columbine, E suggests.

Ha, Angie, #3 is a costume, but I do wish I could dress like that every day and get away with it!

Sterling and dianthus, I have this theory that if you wear a strong lipstick, it fools people into thinking you have taken the time to "do" your face. Apparently it's working, because I'm only wearing a little mascara and "True Red" lipstick (L'Oreal). I hate the way base feels on my face and almost never wear it. And I don't understand how to wear blush. When I try it, I either look like a clown, or like I have 80s racing stripes (remember that look?).

And Beth Ann, I'll take Joan and/or Joni any day!

Ooh that scarf is GORGEOUS! I would have snatched it up too! And I think your outfit looks very handsome and smart, not at all hippy-ish. I see what you mean about the scarf, and it could be used with another outfit for a hippie look, but I don't think that is what we get from the black outfit at all. And, there is a difference between your Janis outfit and this outfit. You look great both ways actually!

I am a fan of Janis Joplin and you nailed it. I love all of the looks.

I got my hair cut 2 months ago by a new hairstylist. I was tired of driving 3 hours to my old one in my previous town. I took in a picture of a cool girl. She cut it and I thought I looked like a soccer mom. (no offence) DH assured me I did not. I had wanted to look like a back up singer for the Rolling Stones with swishy hair. Okay a week later at the Yoga studio someone said " You got your hair cut. It looks sweet." Not the image I had in mind.

I'm loving the colors. Teal is a personal favorite of mine, and I have a peacock scarf or two myself.

I think if you really want the "Edwardian gentleman" look, you should have a VERY tailored, structured & slim look. Looser definitely looks more bohemian.
