A few days ago I read that the company operating Eddie Bauer stores had filed for bankruptcy. This was Chapter 11, which allows the company to reorganize and keep operating, so I wasn’t too concerned.

Today, however, I got an email about store closings.

I like Eddie Bauer. They have a sporty outdoorsy vibe. Mostly what I buy there are tee shirts. I wear a long sleeved one everyday in winter. This year I bought a new mid calf down coat. We’ve had practically no winter, so I haven’t worn it much as much as anticipated, but it’s been great for dog walking at night.

I hope Eddie Bauer doesn’t shut down! Does anyone else care?

Yes! I buy an item or two most every year.

I have quit buying most of their SS and LS basic tee’s as they switched to a poly-cotton blend some years ago and I find it gets tiny pills. I still have 2 100% cotton tees from at least 15 years ago with no holes ! They do make some smoother cotton ones but they’re cut shorter- works better for maybe a couple of my pants styles Nimitz otherwise tends to bd in the neither long or short territory.

I bought a black down vest his year on sale that amazingly did not have their logo on it. Yay.

I get their flannel- lined BF jeans. I have a knee- length down coat also— dint wear often but it’s there for our nearly- annual polar vortex week plus travel to busy family farther north.

I don't shop there, but I sure would. Restructuring sometimes involves closing underperforming locations. It seems to also be happening to businesses that aren't going bankrupt at all. This is of course, fiscally smart--it only bothers me when it is the only one of its kind in a state/area, etc.

I bet you there is news about whether they will do a full or total closure of all locations.

Unfrumped, I haven’t noticed pilling, but they aren’t as soft as they used to be. Have you found a good substitute for the tee? A lot of the tees I’ve tried from Macy’s have shrunk in length.

Carol, I looked for a list of store closures, but couldn’t find one. Our EB is the only one in the state, so maybe it won’t close. With all the drama at Macy’s, ours keeps surviving somehow, so maybe our EB will too.

Karen, same here. Even if I didn’t buy that much, I liked almost everything.

That’s where I find my silk long underwear. Everything else went downmarket when they were bought by private equity.

There was one large store in the premium mall in Wpg, and it closed in December 2025 . I used to buy my husband clothes and outdoor gadgets from EB year ago but didn’t shop there myself . In recent years it seemed it ran permanently “ on sale “ .

Cat, the private equity purchase must be when the tees stopped being all cotton. I think I'm wearing an all cotton one right now. I got my silk long underwear from my mother. I don’t know where she got it. The best long underwear I’ve ever had is from Patagonia.

Lisa, I usually buy stuff online, but we were in the store recently. I was surprised to see they were out of LS tees. If I had thought about it at all, I might have guessed what was going on.

My husband bought many of his clothes there when they had a large B&M store in Toronto. He has a down parka from those days. He also has two lighter-weight coats. I used to buy outdoor clothes like parkas from Eddie Bauer in the 90s.
It hasn't been the same in a long time.

It’s a strange time to be a retailer. Between the pandemic changing/speeding up changes we already saw in shopping and the current situation with tariffs that had frankly upset many supply chains I expect more disruption and closures. I would expect that some one might buy the name but, but I’d be surprised if Eddie Bauer as it exists today will survive

Always sad to hear of a long time retailer closing down. Gosh, the retail times they are a changing and definitely not always for the better.

Style Fan, back in the 90s, I had a lovely linen floral jumper with overalls hardware that I wore it to work. I haven’t seen anything like that in a long time. I bought one of their long parkas this winter. It’s very good for what it is, but it’s not good enough for our winter birding trips. When we went to Japan I took a long Patagonia parka. It was super warm and waterproof, too.

KKards, the article mentions the operator of the stores. Not the company. It sounds very odd to me. Does that sound normal to you?

I liked what they had in the stores, I kept my hopes up, but somehow hardly ever managed to snag anything that fit. The Eddie Bauer raincoat I got last year, I never saw it in the stores here. I ordered it online off the Kohl's web site.

Karen, I didn’t know EB was available at Kohl’s. I suppose that’s the future.
