Does this jacket scream "cool mom"?

I keep going back to this denim jacket after coming across it on the Nordstrom site. It kinda makes my heart go pitter patter. I have two denim jackets currently. One is faded (not this much) and slightly distressed while the other one is a darker wash, more classic jacket. I almost never reach for the darker one. Not sure why. Maybe the color makes me feel that it's too matronly/classic, hence not enough of a juxtaposition to my style, which skews Modern Classic? But then Anna confused me in her post about denim jackets and "cool moms."

Uh oh, would this jacket look like I am trying to be a cool mom? My kids (almost all in their 20s) would ROTFL if they thought I was trying to be cool.

I have s similar jacket and like it for its ability to casualize an outfit. I've no idea about "cool mom" style but often see elementary teachers wearing them.

I had to go hunt for that thread from Anna.

I wouldn't worry about this looking too young. I'd worry more, how does it fit and how will I wear it. Do you want to wear it with dresses or skirts or jeans? If you wear it with jeans do you like a high contrast look (as shown in the picture)? I do like the way the inside cuff matches the shorts.

Denim jackets are never out of style. I'm not a mom but I'll rock a cool jacket jet whenever.

If you wear it confidently, no one would think that you are "trying" to be a cool mom. Don't show any doubt. They will think that you are a cool mom! Nobody cares about the age any more anyways unless you are showing too much skin. I am almost 40 with a 2 year toddler and I dress like I am in my twenties. I try to show no self-doubt and I think I am pulling it off. Go for it - it is really nice. It has this Evereve.com vibe to it - that is where the cool moms shop. I like it.

I love this colour and would go for it.
I have a denim jacket and will pair it with darker denim on the bottom, not just white. In other words, I find this light denim almost acts as a white in your wardrobe.

Joy...Yes, I like my other light denim for that same reason, to casualize an outfit. My darker jacket never seems to me to have the same effect.

CocoLion....I absolutely don't like the denim on denim look EXCEPT if it's high contrast. Most of my denim bottoms are dark. The sleeves appealed to me too on this jacket.

Ledonna and Teodora...I like your confidence. Trying to get there myself. As a 52 year old with 20-something kids, I often feel like I am straddling some weird kind of style line. Yes, there are cool moms around me. But there are just as many "I've given up" moms too.

BC and Debbie....that's my hope I guess, that it's a classic and ageless wash.

smittie...yes, I am probably partly attracted to it because of the lightness for this time of year. I am not sure I'd ever get a white denim jacket (it just feels a bit less versatile to me), but this light wash could be a nice substitute.

The jacket is cool. Full stop. If you happen to be a mum, you will be a "cool mum" wearing it, but you would look great in it regardless of whether you were 16 or 60. My DH is fond of saying that as soon as women worry about dressing in an "age-appropriate" manner, they start dressing "old".

To me, the whole cool mom thing was really about dressing in a way that was inauthentic, almost a costume (again like Amy Poehler's character) to seem young and hip. This jacket IS cool, i would wear in a heartbeat. If it works with your style and you feel fab in it, you should def wear it!

I had never heard of "cool mum". I think the jacket is nice and would suit a lot of people whatever age.

I think we need to take back cool mom from the AP character. I mean isn't Amy Poehler herself a cool mom? Keep the jacket!

I would love to ban the term "cool mom" from the forum -- it adds another layer of judgment and confusion onto a group of us who must walk a path full of pitfalls each day to get dressed.

You eloquently explained why this jacket would work for you. This purchase would have nothing to do with trying to assimilate someone else's "younger" style and everything to do with making your own well-defined style as interesting as it can be. And it makes your heart pitter patter, always a good thing.

Edit- i just re-read this. Not chastising anyone who has employed the term...just expressing my frustration...

I like the jacket. I think the light colour will make it more wearable in summer than a darker wash.

I think this jacket looks like a classic that will take on the personality of the outfit and wearer, in a manner of speaking. It's similar to my light wash denim jacket, which comes in handy for dressing down a dress or throwing on when I need a light layer on a cool summer morning, etc.

Definitely does not look overdone or "trying too hard" or anything like that. I find it pretty timeless.

More and more, I'm coming to feel that those of us who are over 45, let's say, or over 50, need to establish our own fun approach to fashion and to styling. wouldn't it be grand if our grown kids said to us--I need to get a jacket like that. Instead, my grown daughter just shops my closet! But we do have very similar leanings. I'm a little more boho than she is, however. She tries to rein me in

Ok as the original rabble rouser who used the term "cool mom", I like that jacket, it's not overwrought.
However I loathe the styling. Was the stylist having a bad day?

Thanks, all, for the vote of support and your thoughts. It's a tricky place to be, this mid-life phase. Trying to navigate it stylishly while being true to myself...well, let's just say I'm a work in progress. But I learn so much here from all of you. This is a great place to be.

Anna, you are the epitome of cool, LOL! Your posts are always interesting and often make me think, even though your style is not my style. But isn't that what makes YLF so much fun? Thanks for the styling links. I'm kind of a minimalist so they work for me.
