Do you wear slips?

I was wearing this dress today and I could tell I might run into some static on the skirt. I don’t wear slips that often, but I put one on with it and was happy I did. Occasionally I’ve worn shorts like the find, as long as they aren’t too constricting.

That got me thinking - I had two slips in high school. One of them died several years ago, but today I wore my slip from high school! I’ve purchased a few slips in the many years since, but I don’t like them as well. I’m not sure how the fabric feels different, but it does.

Do you wear slips with dresses? Any brand you recommend? Do you think the majority of people don’t wear slips anymore? Kind of like pantyhose, only the minority partake?

Most dresses I buy are lined and so I don't need slips with them. However, recently I bought a dress that was unlined and when I put a slip underneath it felt much nicer to wear. My silk slip is by Heidi Klum, I have really enjoyed wearing the slip, because it is so pretty and the silk is lovely against my skin (photo below).

I wear my silk slips to bed in hot weather as a nightie - which is why I had this pink slip in the first place. Given how hard it is to find slips at retail, I think they are a bit of a niche item and even less prevalent than hosiery.

I have some that I’ve had for years — I keep them just in case because they’re hard to find now. I think I still have a spanx slip too, yikes. I even have some vintage full and half slips that were my mom’s. Truly beautifully made pieces that are still wearable.

The only time I’ve worn one in the last few years is with a dress that is a little too clingy and a little too sheer without it. I think that one is by Commando — it’s very simple and lightweight. So I think I’ve worn a slip only one less time than I’ve worn pantyhose in the last few years!

As was previously mentioned, if a dress is fully lined, it generally does not need a slip. However, most others do, at least in my experience. Many are too sheer in sunlight, even if it isn't immediately recognizable in the mirror. I use silk slips with lace edges, as the polyester ones are usually of poor quality (I don't have any issue with poly, generally speaking; I just cannot find slips that aren't really cheaply made). I do wear slips. It feels wrong to wear a dress or skirt without a slip, even if the dress is lined.

I have a few slips but have not wore them in a long time. I actually prefer long shorts like the Spanx above when a dress or skirt is too sheer or apt to fly away.

I wear a half slip most of the time with skirts and dresses since I also usually wear tights. The slip prevents clinging and makes the dress hang better. It also gives me a bit of warmth and prevents see-through. The ones I bought are Halogen (Nordstrom's own brand) with no elastic at the top but just enough spandex to keep them up without compression. I wanted to duplicate but I haven't seen them in years. I lost a favorite taffeta slip somewhere in my house at least a decade ago, and it still hasn't shown up and I don't want that to happen again!

Only skirts I have are maxi, and I wear a slip to prevent static cling. Sorry I can't remember the brand - got them a few years ago. I've heard the Commando shorts are nice. I've also tried Jockey Slip Shorts - very comfy.

I have a short nude skip that I've had forever that I wear under shirts and dresses if they seem like they'll be staticky. I wear them more in the winter to keep dresses/skirts from sticking to my tights. Occasionally I'll wear one in the summer if the fabric is a bit thin. I don't think they're that common anymore. I have a friend who was astonished to learn that I occasionally wear a slip.

I see there are others who are wearing them. Some dresses or skirts really call for slips more than others. I’ve got a culotte slip I’ve worn in past for long skirts, but that hasn’t been out of the drawer in a long time.

I’ll check out the Commando and Wintersilks if I decide to find something new.

Oh yes. And I also like Jockey slip shorts, I find them nonbinding. And I have a full slip of my mother’s from the 60s that I’m hanging onto for dear life... haven’t seen one in a store in decades.

I wear slips, but they are tough to shop for. I have two on which I absolutely rely; a camisole, so not a slip, and then a longer in the same style that is a slip. Love them both and I am thinking about the same combination in white. I bought them from Rigby and Peller. £££ but worth it.

I have a few others, but they aren't the same quality and feel a bit cheap and a compromise. They don't really stop static for me. I have a lot of static problems and have to be super careful!

Interesting! I don’t wear slips actually. The few dresses I wear are loose in shape, I never felt the need for one.
Actually now, when I am thinking about it - I wear one, it came with a dark blue silk shirt dress, it is also in silk and the dress is not possible to use without it because it’s rather see through.
Since you all are fond of slips, I will try this one with some other skirts and dresses, thanks for the inspiration.

I really like wearing Jockey slip shorts under skirts and dresses — more because I find them comfortable to walk in.

I am much more likely to wear slip shorts than slips, although I have hung onto my old ones just in case. It was always hard for me to find ones the right length because I’m only 5’2” so I often felt like they were peeking out the bottom. Hated that.

My 25 year old daughter does not wear slips and never has, and since they’re getting harder to find in stores I think they’ll soon be obsolete.

i wonder if most women under that age of 30 even know what a slip is....that being said i don't wear them....like Toban if needed i like the Joceky slip shorts...

I wear slips at times. As a matter of fact, I was wearing my BR skirt with a ruffle on the hem without a slip because it is lined and I realized that at the end of the day the fabric was getting puffy on the butt and did not look good at all.
The next time I wore it with a slip and did not have that problem so slips may be a necessary evil. Now that you are all pointing out that you cannot even find them I will make a point to stash a few so that I will never run out.

I do - once in awhile if the dress is too sheer or thin to go without. I prefer slip shorts in summer, as I'm not thin enough to have upper thighs that don't touch. The feeling of my thighs touching when walking or sitting makes me crazy.

I have a few half slips that I rarely wear but keep just in case. I have some of the slip shorts but I find that they tend to roll up my thighs in a rather uncomfortable manner, anyone else have this problem ?

Jane - I also have static problems. It’s frustrating when a slip adds to the problem, as that’s most of the point in my mind.

I have had shorts that have really worked well in past, and others I’ve tossed into the trash in frustration. It’s crazy how some have been so good and others worthless.

I also can’t stand the slip peeking out at bottom, and have definitely adjusted where it sits at my waist to avoid it being seen. When I was in college I wore a lot of short skirts. I actually found a slip that ended just under my bum. I don’t have that one anymore, but it shows how I wore them even then.

I purchased a slip for my DD because she had a dress I found too sheer without it. I don’t think she’s ever worn it with a different dress, so I doubt she will ever wear a slip as a regular practice. TBH, she’s not into dresses at all right now, so maybe a moot point anyway.

Janet, try the Jockey cooling slip shorts. They are perfect for DC summers. They’ve never felt sweaty or sticky to me. They are also not spanx or other body shaping, so they don’t cut in at all. They are also available in two lengths. I now have them in multiples for DC summers.

I wear a slip or a half slip when I feel that it is needed. I own a few and have had them for years.

Slip shorts are an unknown concept to me. and I can't say I feel attracted.

I knew I had some slip shorts, but wasn’t sure the brand. They are jockey shorts in the longer length. Since I’m wearing a skirt just below the knees today today, I put them on. They are my regular size, so I didn’t need to size up. They feel good and stay put. The waist doesn’t roll down and the legs don’t roll up. Not sure why they’ve been hiding in my drawer forgotten for so long. I will definitely wear them this summer.

I have a couple of very old half slips. I can’t remember when I wore them last. My favorite slip was a type of shorts slip and I felt most secure in those for some reason. I guess because they couldn’t ride up or bunch up. I no longer have them. Now I’m more likely to wear Jockey skimmers or something similar.
