RBF for the win. The rest is context dependent: what works for the street doesn’t work for a yet another meeting to straighten something out at our completely dysfunctional big bank.

Since I was a teen I find stompy boots and a black leather jacket to be my 'don't mess with me attire', however I don't ever need this armor any more.
Just an observation, and not in any way facetious, I do find it interesting that some find the term Ladieswear for clothing offensive (as discussed in another thread recently), and calling someone a Bitch not. I personally find Bitch awful for any gender.

Star, lol! I certainly wouldn’t call anyone “bitch” without first making sure they were ok with it, even more carefully since hearing Coach’s reaction. Calling all women “lady” also seems inadvisable to me—but is only one of a series of ways clothing & the clothing industry judge us, as discussed in numerous other threads. Recall too how long it took for the reply that yes, that phrase was intended for all women, to come up—that’s how deeply embedded assumptions and judgements are.

Being arch and ladylike could be a way of asserting oneself, sort of like Cruella deVille. Others might choose the opposite of ladylike, and go for stompy boots, square-cut jeans, and oversized sweaters or leather jackets & a buzz cut to assert themselves.

FS Someone in that thread commented that Gentleman and Lady is used for an unknown person in the UK. A polite form I guess. In South Africa old English traditions still prevail and it drove me absolutely crazy when a perfectly experienced journalist would report that a Gentleman raped a Lady. Hello, a Gentleman is a rapist or a murderer!!! Anyway totally off-thread, sorry ST.

The smile as a “don’t mess with me” indeed!

For some reason I call women ladies, even when they're not so nice! I wouldn't do same with the word gentleman!

You can't go wrong with a Viking helmet, chainmail and a battle axe accessory !

Ah, Cee! I have missed your brilliance!

That's not what the doctor called it...

Well I have a chainmaile headdress for Faire and my wood chopping axe- does that count?

The Head Cleaver Society say AYE !!

I did feel pretty bad arse when I bought the axe DH knew I wanted to be the one to carry it!

The Viking complaints department is a very boring job.

Probably high turnover tho...

They have a doggy department too !

I picture the Head Cleaver Society as people walking around with their heads split open and axes stuck in the middle. Not gory, because they’ve been that way for years, so it’s all healed up, of course. They just have that funny shape, and axes.

Sam is that you???

I have no idea what's happening in this thread anymore lol but I just taught my first classes of the year. Decided to wear my bottle green pantsuit* so that no one would confuse me for a student lol.

*the one that someone here said looked 'dandy' as an interview outfit - lol if that reads as 'don't mess with me!' then so be it

If I need to deal with people, I don’t need to wear special clothes. I think I have perfected the look on my face. It is not a resting bitch face. It is calm and determined. That’s all. I also like to use a calm but firm tone of voice and repeat what I need them to do. It usually works.
