Do I dare? My first WIW

Gingerly dipping my toe in so be honest yet gentle! I wore this to church to teach in the kids' class. The classroom was chilly, despite the warm Seattle weather we are having so I needed to layer. Gray caslon pants rolled up, drapey white sweater and my new gray and white eyeball Fresh Produce t-shirt I just got in San Diego. And the one pair of sandals I drag out every year for the brief summer we get.

Regarding taking photos: I had to close the blinds because the sun was making me dark. I hope with practice I will get better...

Welcome! Congrats on jumping in with the WIW. I found it helpful to take pics eveyrday and post them at least once a week at first --- the more the forum knows your style and wardrobe, the more helpful it can be!

I love your sandals --- casual, but flattering --- comfortable, but with modern proportions. You have a great modern idea with the roll in your hems and the texture in cardi (along with white ---- a great Summer choice).

Hope to see you post again! Do you have any style goals in mind for the coming year?

Hmmm. Style goals. I think I struggle with dressing for my imaginary life and I have been TRYING to dress for my actual life the past year or so. I have way too many dressy clothes for my very casual lifestyle which means I don't have a lot to wear, despite having a full closet. I also have a real mental block about spending money on casual clothes. Even though 90% of my life is casual, I still haven't made that connection and most of my casual clothes are poor quality, don't last a full season and I end up feeling frumpy and not pulled-together. I am getting better about it though and I need to keep reminding myself to focus on my real life and focusing my resources in that area now.

Welcome to the wonderful world of WIW! And oh, I hear you on the difficulty of spending money on casual items, even though that's the life you lead. I finally broke through that barrier by buying my first pair of premium jeans, and once I did, there was no looking back. That's not to say that I don't appreciate a bargain -- of course I do. But considering I spend most of my time in casual clothing, it only makes sense to make it the best clothing I can afford. If you're like me, you'll feel so much happier as you do this, because you'll be wearing things that make you look great instead of "okay."

Now, my problem is that I also have another capsule of city smart casual clothes --- and somehow I feel like I want to spend lots on those, too, even though I don't wear them as much.

Congratulations on your first photo post, Marlene. I like the cascading cardi with the tee also.
To use an Angie term, I bat for Team Dressy but have a casual life. YLF has shown me that one can use dressy pieces in a casual way and that has helped so much. I started with silky or sparkly tops with jeans and dressy flats. That worked well. Putting something denim or leather like a moto jacket can work with a skirt. Be sure to look at Angie's Mom On The Go posts for more ideas

I like your casual outfit a lot, Marlene. Like you, most of my needs are very casual, and if the fabric repels dog hair, so much the better. I dropped in at NAS on the first day, and only looked in the Active Sportswear dept, as I'm easily seduced by the soft, luxurious, dry clean only lovelies in the other departments. I bought the Patagonia sweater jacket and called it a day.

'Hi'- a lovely patterned top here. I too find drapy cardigans handy for adding a little warmth.
I commend you on not over-doing your sandal capsule when your hot days are few, and a nude or neutral colour will go with most.

I'll add to Joy's comment by suggesting that you try dressing down some of your dressy clothes to better suit your casual lifestyle. Angie has some excellent pointers on how to do this. You could try typing "dressing down" in the search engine and see what you come up with.
Congratulations on your first post; it takes a bit of pluck, doesn't it?

Great first WIW, I had the same problem. I had a closet of dressy clothes and a very casual life. I think finding casualish things that you really love is important. You can also mix a little of your dressy stuff with casual to dress it up.
