Do I add a third winter coat when I live in a temperate climate?

The price stalking of the Jcrew coat has been successful and all I need to do to make it mine is press the button.

Here is my earlier thread. The image below is the correct size and color.

I don't wear my winter coats in my current climate, but I wear them when I travel to cold climates, which usually gets me to at least 15 wears/year (more this year).

My Desigual coat is a "dress up coat" which I know is going to take time to get down in CPW. I bought it when I lived in NYC and have no problem holding onto it for years.

My black basic coat is already down to $1 CPW after living in NYC. It's in good shape, but if it does fall apart, I wouldn't have a replacement.

Should I buy the blue coat now since it fits well/is at a great price/is higher quality or just wait till the black coat wears out? Does it make sense to buy a backup before you really need it given that the price/fit/quality is right?

If I still lived somewhere cold, this would be a no-brainer.

Sometimes it does make sense to buy a back up before you really need it. If it's in the budget and not keeping you from buying something that you really need, I say go for it.

Hmmm. It's a toss up for me. I bought some boots and a few coats while I've been here in FL, knowing that they'd get use when I move back to Tahoe. But they've each gotten only about one or two wears. If I were living here year round, they would not be earning their Cost Per Wear and I would consider them bad buys honestly. It's up to you to determine what your CPW threshold is for an item I guess.

I agree with Khris - coats can be hard to find; *especially* when you need them, that seems to be the time when nothing fits and you're left freezing or forced to buy something sub-par. If you won't prevent a more pressing purchase, I think it's a good idea.

I'd say Yay, if it's in the budget, too. It's hard to find a coat that you like, that fits and is a good price when you *need* one! I love the color of that one, too.

I say yes! A good fitting, good quality coat is hard to find. Also, that shade of blue is very versatile. I have a similar coat and I love it!

I say yes, too -- it's nice to have a coat in a cheery color in case of gray wintry days. If you really like this one, go for it. It looks classic and should last ages.

I vote yes as the fit and color is gorgeous. As long as its in the budget it is an investment for the years to come.

They are final sale right now, so if the new one comes and isn't consistent with the previous one in the pics, be sure to take pics to your nearest store and have them reorder for you! (I found inconsistencies in the way their coats fit me this year.)

*sigh* Thank you so much - the consensus appears to be "buy it so long as it is within budget"

The issue is that it doesn't fit into the loose monthly budget I assigned myself (darn Jigsaw blazer), but I am lucky enough to be able to buy it without hardship. Borrowing from February's budget is cheating and I don't want to return/forgo other items that are more immediately useful.

@Mo: My CPW threshold is about $1. Since I've gotten the black coat down to $1 CPW, as far as I'm concerned, any further wear of that coat is a bonus. If it disappeared tomorrow, I would feel like I'd gotten my money's worth. I really appreciate your perspective as someone who has done the shift between two different climates thing.

@Mnsara: Thanks for the heads up on taking it to the store to have it looked over. I wouldn't even think that they'd be willing to exchange it based on photos I'd taken earlier.

You know if it's this hard to convince myself to buy it at this price, I probably shouldn't. I have some packages arriving tonight, so I'll make a decision based on how much I end up keeping/if it's still available. If it gets sold out, it's not like I won't be able to buy it on ebay later (there are several).

As a side question: is storage space an issue- if so I'd say pass, else keep.

@Sona, storage space isn't an issue. I got a walk in closet so I could umm... store my yarn. If I run out of space for clothes, I could always get rid of some of my fiber stuff.

Sylvie, if you can buy w/o hardship, can you borrow from, say, September's budget instead of February's? I mean, since it's really going to be waiting in the wings for the black one to wear out, it'll be like you put the blue coat on layaway until Fall and paid for it then.

Sylvie, I also live in a fairly temperate climate...I have lots of outer wear, they all serve a purpose, and I love them:)

Sylvie, I know you are trying to be a sensible shopper, but I must tell you that I ADORE that coat on you. So if you can buy it without hardship and think you would wear it next year and beyond, then I am in favour of pressing the button.

I don't think I would buy it if you could use your Desigual coat if your black coat starts to look worn. I don't remember If I've seen your *dress up* coat, but if you could take it on your travels, then you'll get more wear out of it. I am tempted by these non-dominant season items too, but if I wait a minute, the desire passes.

Climate change is the reality of our times, so perhaps a third coat is merely a practical measure for a reasonable woman.

Thank you so much all for your input and supporting me in my irrational desire for this coat. My size/color is currently sold out and I'm not freaking out/really sad I missed it. The price was very reasonable for a need but not reasonable for a want that doesn't fit into my dominant season, as Claire mentioned. If it comes back in stock in my size for a ridiculously low price, I can pick it up. When the black coat wears out or if I ever move back somewhere cold, I don't mind paying full price for a perfect coat that's a true need.

Thank you again - I feel a little like I've wasted the time of the forum members (sorry) but it really was helpful to me to be able to think about this with an understanding audience. There is no way my husband/friends would have had the patience to deal with me going back and forth!

I'm glad you were able to decide. It's a good sign that you aren't sad about missing it. That says that you didn't want or need it that bad.

Beautiful color and if you are down to a low cost per wear on your main coat it sounds like a new coat is reasonable.
