Distractions on Order - YouLookFab Forum

I'd been having computer issues since Saturday night, and Astrid's Awesome UWP Jacket won't be arriving for about a week, so on Sunday morning I ordered a little distraction through Zappos VIP free 1-day shipping.

These are the boots from my Fall Lust List - a.k.a. contender #2 for this year's birthday gift to self.

They will be competing against the UWP Jacket, but first I am evaluating them on their own merits. They run a half size small, so I need to get a different pair. It is in the 90s again today, so I did not dare style them with jeans or tights today.

The shaft fits nicely and looks good on my legs. Concerns:

- These struck me as Fashion Gear in the pic. Do they look like Regular Gear on my legs?

- Are they awesome enough for annual gift status, or do they pale in comparison to my Frye Jennas (pic 5).

- The footbed *feels* like a regular rain boot - not especially comfy nor especially uncomfy, but then I've never owned real rain boots. How are Sorels at supporting the foot over long walks?

IMO they look more like gear than fashion, and I really don't think they are in the same league as the Fryes.

They do look fun with the dresses, though. Just not sure they are annual gift status level.

If you needed a gear boot, I would absolutely give them the thumbs up as a fashionable gear boot. But as a purely fashion boot, they do pale in comparision to the Frye Jenna's.

Can't say either way on keeping or not, but Sorel's are more about keeping the 2 feet of snow out of your boots than anything else. They (Sorel's) have an interior sock lining you can pull out that sort of cradles the foot, but honestly I don't think about the footbed so much as whether my toes are frostbiting over or not.

I think they don't compare to the Fryes because their purpose is different ... the Sorels will keep all weather from you, and keep you on the sidewalk when it is icy and slippery!

Yeah, I guess they are meant to be capital-G Gear. Which is why I like them I bet, lol. I would definitely wear them as Gear, but I would want to have them cross over into casual wear, too. Cuz, you know how often it snows in LA... would it just look silly?

Um, LA is where I first saw Uggs with shorts (on boys!) in the late 80's in high school - so, no, I don't think they'd look silly

Turned on the A/C briefly and took a few more pics with outerwear... now I'm thinking they just don't hit up high enough on my leg. Oh well, better to have tried... I will stick to my other boots and copious amounts of waterproofing spray.

It is the rubber "duck-foot" that gives them an off look to me and classifies them as gear with a capital G. The foot portion reminds me of gardening clogs. Otherwise I really like the canvas inserts and the overall look.

Thise look great for a NYC day of slush, rain or snow but they seem out of context for LA. I like the Fryes tons more.

They are absolutely fashion gear here, with the emphasis on gear. My worry is that they are just fashion in L.A., the way Carharrts are in New York. Love them but not sure you need them, KWIM?

ps: nuts that i saw that great coat (the astrid uwp). i wound up ordering it as well and used you as a reference to get the same price discount.

BJ, that is awesome news about the price adjustment! I really hope it works - for the both of us. And! I just checked and the coat delivery was bumped up to early delivery on Wednesday! Woohoo!

As for the Sorels, The Forum has spoken! For the record, they were not in competition with the Fryes, which are staying regardless. But I do totally get the fact that, should I want a rugged flat boot that will withstand most LA elements, the Fryes will do the job and look more stylish. Plus, I just like the proportions on my legs better. I still love all the straps and laces and pulleys, but it wasn't meant to be.

You are welcome to come visit in whch case I'll highly recommend all kinds of boots!

what Una said about local fashion - LA vs Alaska vs NYC etc Though I love the Sorels as (fashion)Gear. would work great in the northern winters like here. And I totally understand how you are attracted to the contradictions between the boots and the dresses

What I wanted to say has already been said: yes, the splayed, duckish toe box makes them look more gear than fashion; and yes, the Fryes are a better version of a similar idea.
