Denim skirt w/plaid; too matchy?

In spite of the dour expression on my face in these photos, I think I like this.

I tried to wear the skirt with booties, but I just can't seem to adjust to a pencil skirt with booties for some reason. Anyone else have that issue?

also am wearing my new Liebeskind bag of whose color I was unsure when I
ordered. Of course, different light makes the color change, but I think
this is going to work nicely for fall. I love a large bag!

I
feel unsure of myself with patterns, and at the same time don't want to
be matchy matchy with the bag and shoes. Do you guys think the shoes and bag work?
And one more question - is the skirt length right? I could probably go up or down a smidge by adjusting the waist.

I am open to constructive feedback.

And if anyone cares to share photos of pencil skirts working with booties, I would love a study guide featuring real people and not models!!

I like it! I don't see matchy-matchy because the bag is suede and the shoes are patent. If anything, to me there is a bit of juxtaposition going on because most of the outfit is casual, in soft fabrics, vs the shiny smooth patent which I read as 'dressy' (which may be entirely my own thing, I am not sure). I think this type of contrast is on-trend as are all of your individual elements, so I see a winning outfit.

Looks great! The shape of the skirt is amazing. I need to update my denim pencil skirt - it's getting a bit long in the tooth.

I'm wearing my denim pencil skirt with black booties today. Last year that combo freaked me out, but this year I'm going for it. Took me a while to build up enough bravery.

Great shoe color, I want them. The length is really flattering on you. I would suggest a shorter length if you went with botties, like slightly above the knee.

Yes, the fit, textures and colours make this outfit work so well. The individual pieces compliment each other and the silhouette is feminine and flattering. I agree, shoes or long boots do look better than booties with pencil skirts and since you are tall, the skirt length works really well. This is modern and classy and I like it very much! YLF!

I think it's the much dressier patent pumps that look out of place. I want to see either a more refined belt or some sort of necklace to tie in. Even if the pumps weren't patent it'd be more cohesive. Like even a leopard hair calf would work.

Wow the color is beautiful on you and you're making me re-think denim skirts! I love booties with pencil skirts - I say just go for it! I do agree with Anna about the belt in this outfit. The belt, in combination with the flannel, plaid, and denim, is taking this outfit into rugged territory. A dressier belt might make the pumps more cohesive with the rest of the outfit!

So are y'all saying leopard belt OR leopard pumps? I get it about the belt being rugged. Just not sure what color belt.

Aida - I was actually been going back through your posts last night because I'm looking for a flat or low heeled bootie in taupe and as an admirer of your style I thought I might find something you have worn that is still available. Your outfits also inform about skirt length with booties. There seems to be a sweet spot on the amount of leg to show depending on the height of the boot. I need to experiment.

Ah I'm flattered! My taupe-ish footwear is all older, but I can tell you what they are and maybe you can track them down. The tall nude boots I have are Miz Mooz "Flynn" and the short boots are Report "Marks" in sand. Light taupes are a tough color to find in footwear unfortunately.

The sweet spot will change depending on several factors, the main one being whether the shoe is low contrast or not, followed afterwards by the skirt length. With a low contrast shoe you can "get away" with less conventional proportions. The length and treatment of the top half can also affect it.

Re the belt, I think you could certainly do leo and leo but I like the idea of a leopard belt with the red shoes. Or maybe a shiny silver/gold belt.

I think you look good in that outfit, denim midis are all the rage atm, and the length looks fine to me (although you could cut down an inch or two).
