Dad's Wedding - What to Wear? ETA: Styled Pics

UPDATE: Got off my tush and tried the blue and berry dresses with the coat (pics 5, 6, and 7 now). I'm actually liking the tonal berry colors together and think maybe it looks the most like a "formal outfit" as opposed to a coat over a random dress? Two shoe options: strappy and sparkly. I also have black...? Thoughts much appreciated! I have also put out another line to dad for time and fiancee info.

My dad is engaged and set to get married in mid-April, in Missouri. Yay!

He said they aren't going fancy with the dress code and to just wear my "Sunday best" - but I know he doesn't want me showing up in my weekend yoga pants and sweats, so I'm a little bit stumped. The building it's going to be at is a culinary center. I got the brocade jacket below for this occasion, because spring in MO is still going to be pretty cold for me, but now I don't know what to put underneath. Doesn't help that I'm down with a sinus infection right now...

It's hard to get more detailed information out of Dad... the gyst of it is kind of like whatever-as-long-as-you-look-nice. I am not even sure what time of day it is! My dad's style is pretty rock n roll - I have not met his fiancee, though, which makes it even tougher. Including a pic of the ring... does that help at all? o_0

I have the two draped anthro dresses in 2-3, the rouched Black Halo I wore for Christmas in 4-5, and then I also have two random dresses from the back of the closet, 6-7. 6 is probably not appropriate, but I put it here just to show the status of my "dress up" capsule.

ETA: the brocade jacket is pretty much definitely being worn, as I got it new for the event. Not an Asian wedding, so no problem wearing red.

Do I need to just go out and get something new? If so, I should probably start looking sooner rather than later.

That coat is beautiful! I think it would look great over the black halo dress or the dresses in 1 or 2 as well.

If you're going to wear the brocade jacket the black dress would probably work under it. Will there be dancing? Do you know anyone else going? More info would be helpful - could you ask the fiancee?

I love the brocade coat. I'd shy away from black for this wedding (like you were mourning the whole affair). I love the striped dress, but stripes vibrate a lot in pictures... so I'd shy away from that too... not the white... #7 seems a little shiny... #2 a little casual... LOL, I like excuses for a new dress ;>

Your brocade jacket is beautiful! Is that navy or black in the print? Instinct says the black dress, but I'm thinking you need to post pics wearing the different dresses.

How would that coat in #1 look with that dress in #2?

i like 3 ...!!! if u don't wanna be that fancy ...on number one i would feel out of the place ...a vamp with roccoco inspiration lol ( and I LOVE IT but not for the occation) !!! I know u have something interesting in ur closet!!! or buy something new it's a special day

Of the dresses you've shown, I like the black the best. However, you should probably make sure that it will be OK to wear black to this wedding... (by which I mean, make sure the bride is OK with it... I figure you know whether your dad would mind or not). I have worn black to weddings but generally evening ones, and there are certain people (family, mostly, of the more traditional type) whose weddings I would not wear black to.

I love #4! I think that could go well for almost any dress code, and location. The jacket in 1 is great too if you need a cover up.

I would say the Anthro dress would be great if it's a more casual wedding - that coat will make it really special though, esp. if you dress it up with heels and jewelry. Why don't you try that and see what you come up with first? I wouldln't go with the stripes or black because neither seem "wedding" appropriate for various reasons.

The coat is beautiful, Rae. I think it would work well with the black dress, but you'd need to see if that is okay. Truth is, your new step-mom is lucky to be getting such a beautiful and thoughtful step-daughter. Whatever you wear!

Is there any way you can communicate with the fiancee? Unless the fellow is metrosexual (and how many guys, much less dads, are?), I don't think that they are very helpful for sartorial advice. I would look for an excuse to wear the brocade coat, but I wouldn't wear a black dress unless it's an evening wedding. How does the blue dress look underneath?

The last time I went to a wedding (traveling to the West Coast to attend) based on what the groom had told my date, I brought a long velvet dress for what was supposed to be a night time formal wedding.
It turned out to be an afternoon wedding with an evening reception.
I had to think REALLY fast for that one.

Thanks everyone! RE the coat, I am still not 100% sure if it is black or super dark navy. The buttons are black, though, so I think it can go with either color. I have added some style pics up top - please pardon the sicky face and hair.

I love that black dress, but for a wedding I'd go for the dress in 6&7. That coat is beautiful.

So fantastic over either of those dresses. I lean slightly to the blue, but I have a ridiculous penchant for blue dresses in general. You look truly amazing!

On another note, I think I have that striped Anthro dress. Is it the Bordeaux one?

Without looking at the responses,I like the dress in pic #5 - is it black or blue?- with the coat and the nude pumps. Very pretty!

Hmm, I think I prefer the blue with the coat because of the length. I think the lengths of the berry dress and the coat are too close to each other. Getting into flasher territory, maybe. I prefer the longer dress with the coat, although I do love the tonal reds.

I really prefer #7 - I feel that tonal dress lets this beautiful coat to shine without a competition. I also prefer closed toe shoes here - April may be pretty nippy for bare toes and also strappy heels feel seasonally confusing to me with the coat.

I like the blue but the tonal look is also beautiful. Wear whichever you feel best in......

Wow! I LOVE you in that coat. Do I also have to pick a dress? You look great in all the options really, but I can't say because some are with the coat and some without. That's my excuse anyway.

Thank you all soo soo much! Dad asked, and his fiancee says black is always appropriate. He said that the time is TBD, but since she is fine with black, that is an option regardless. Seems like these two options will be fine, though.
