Copycat in 3 dimensions - YouLookFab Forum

1st dimension: Lisa's wonderful renditions of outfits inspired by Angie got my copycat gears turning.

2nd dimension: today's outfit is my version of an image from my "fisherwoman of northern seas" inspiration board.

3rd dimension: the outfit features two pieces that I'm pretty sure are owned by other fabbers: I lemminged the sweater from Suz and the shoes from Sharan.

The featured items are secondhand and new to my closet -- this is the first outing for them both. Both are comfortable and fit well (the sweater is somewhat oversized, but I prefer that for an Icelandic-inspired look).

I do find the shoes a bit trickier to style than I'd anticipated. I've put them on and taken them off a couple of times. I really like them in this all-neutral outfit though! That's helping me home in on other ways to wear them.

What about the shoes feels harder to style?

Very cool SarahD8! I love the shoes and I am not usually a lace-up gal (except for sneakers of course). These are really fab, something a bit edgy about them that I find appealing. They look good here. I agree they probably look better with a less busy outfit as they are a subtle statement of sorts (If there is such a thing :).)

Thanks Ket! Oh, to be clear -- I didn't thrift the items *from* fellow fabbers -- just was inspired by them to hunt the items down elsewhere.

Thanks Star! Yes, I agree -- the shoes are somewhat of a statement indeed, a bit edgy.

Re: Ket's question about what about the shoes feels hard to style -- My first guess was going to be that they are somewhat "masculine" so it takes some work to properly titrate the masculine/feminine balance of the outfit. But there is nothing particularly "feminine" of the other elements here. So my updated hypothesis is that I prefer them with low-contrast bottoms to create a long line with (as Star puts it) a subtle statement like a punctuation mark at the end. It was various blue jeans outfits that they didn't feel right to me with. Hmm....

I'm with others, I like your version more than the inspo pic! I'm a big fan of slightly oversized fits right now and that sweater looks so cozy and comfy, plus the light color is perfect for a nod to spring when it's still cold outside.

The oxfords are a fun shoe! I like the bit of shine to them and the slightly pointed toe (almond shape toe?) which gives a feminine vibe to what can often be a very masculine shoe. Those were an excellent purchase. Wear them more often! For styling suggestion, when I've owned oxfords in the past I found they worked well with outfits that I would have reached for a ballet flat or sneakers.

SarahD8, FWIW, your soft pretty long hair neutralizes the oxfords, to my eye

If you like, you can cuff the jeans to showcase ankles (with socks!), which is another softening style technique.

Nailed it! I much prefer your version. The neck detail and your long hair render a scarf unnecessary to the styling.

Angie good point about the hair. I had my hair down in a couple of past instances when I put the shoes on and took them right off again, which is deepening my suspicion that it's actually about color rather than masculine/feminine balance. And yes I'll try exposing the ankles too!

I love the outfit--beautiful rendition of your fisherwoman of the northern seas vision. And I also prefer your version to the inspiration photo! Well done! The sweater is just perfect, and I love the fish-scale texture of the oxfords for another nod to the sea. I'm tickled that you got the oxfords and like them. I can understand how they may be difficult to style at first, especially if you haven't worn oxfords much before. Maybe it's partly that your eye needs to adjust. But also, just figuring out where they fit into your style. To me, this is a perfect outfit to start with for them, because your inspo pic features a similarly classic, refined, menswear-inspired shoe.

Great outfit! And wow, I like the oversized fit of that sweater on you! Mine is in my regular size and definitely more fitted than this, but yours looks more current in the slouchy fit here! What a great nod to your fisherwoman of the sea idea, especially with the texture of the shoes! And perfect for the windy chilly weather we are still having!
