I am fully back in my comfort zone today - black skinnies tucked into knee high boots, teal LS T, and this grey hoody/cardi thing that I was going to purge but decided to keep for awhile. It was difficult not to add a necklace, but decided to stay with fewer accessories suggestion, and just wore these handmade malachite and pearl earrings that I bought in Albuquerque a few years ago at a conference. My black leather jacket is at least 10 years old, and needs to be replaced, but that will have to wait for a year or two. I included a closeup of today's fingerless gloves for Ceit.

So I am realizing that my winter wardrobe is 1) small, and 2) boring. I need to decide how to amend these issues on a small to non-existent budget (next semester I will not be teaching and so will have no income while I finish my dissertation).

I just finally had time to repair a calvarium that a student dropped in class a couple weeks ago It had wormian bones, so that was good, because it channeled the force of impact through the sutures so there was only a small chunk of parietal broken off at the cut. Easy to provide a stable mend, thank goodness.

Have you tried scarves to spice up your winter wardrobe? I buy them super cheap from thrift stores - they are frequently only a dollar or two. I think they can really change how an outfit looks.

You are wearing flattering colours and a flattering silhouette, arty shapes and beautiful craftsmanship, and yummy leather accessories. Where I come from, we call this 'looking good, sister!'

And the fun hand warmer removes any consideration of blahness at least for the onlooker.

I do understand craving variety out of a small wardrobe on a restricted budget, though. I think accessories first may be the way to go, rather than the other way around. And also maybe look at changing out layering tees or tights or hosiery for the colour or pattern of the moment?

Sara, actually I have a ton of scarves, but for some reason I have not been wearing them much this year - will have to start doing so!

Manidipa, you totally made my day, thank you! And you are right, the whole point of my plain Jane wardrobe is to show off my accessories, so I should do that!

It's interesting that you need to downsize your closet in general but the winter part of it is small. I understand the tiny budget thing; where I'm at the thrift stores charge $4 for a top and two days a week everything with a certain colour is $2, so if you had the time to visit thrift stores regularly you'd probably eventually find some good winter additions for not much money. But you need time to do that so not sure it's the best solution for you.

You two and your calvariumular(?) shop talk! I'm glad you kept that gray sweater, it is one of my favorites on you. No constructive suggestions on resolving your winter wardrobe issues. Though I did overhear a conversation at lunch today about a "free shop" where everything is - you got it - free. The server was saying she gets things there - maybe there is one near you? Or maybe something will pop up on in one of the style exchange threads.

I love the earrings and the bone gloves, and you look great in skinnies and boots!

For updating your winter wardrobe, maybe a cardigan in a color that's fun but goes with a lot of your existing clothes would be a good bang for the buck?

I am still scratching my noggin about the idea of a "free" "shop." Is that not an oxymoron of some kind? It hurts my calvarium.

The grey cardigan is great on you. And I am all for stocking up on winter wear. Especially in your situation. You need it in that work environment.

I wonder if sometimes we become so used to or familiar with our own style that we start to think its boring? I don't think your style is boring at all. You wear things that flatter and your accessories add interest. And you beautiful smile enhances everything:)
