Okay, here is something I have wondered from time to time, when I'm reading replies to my posts and awarding points. (I love doing this, especially since as a trained Behavior Analyst I believe in reinforcing desired behavior! I feel sure that these points are part of the reason the forum is so positive!)

This is what I wonder: when is it okay to award a Comedian point? I ask this because very rarely does a response strike me as comic, laugh out loud funny. But very often a response makes me smile. Big smile! But I'm scared to award a Comedian point because it's clear that the responder wasn't trying to be funny per se. I don't want to seem like I'm mocking. Like I think you're risible.

BUT I want to award one if it's okay, because at least for me, Comedian points are the hardest ones to get. Are they for you? Also, often, with these posts that make me smile, there's not a clear alternative for points, either.

I know that people aren't obsessively checking every response to see what point it got. But surely people check sometimes. And I don't want to communicate imprecisely.

So... if your post made me smile, would you mind getting a Comedian point?

Quite often I've gotten comedy points when I was deadly serious I'm okay with that though. It gives me feedback that is consistent with real life, which is that my thoughts are a little eccentric and people don't know what to make of them or think I must be joking.

Sometimes I actually am being funny though!

I'd love getting comedy points. Since they are hard to get, it would make me LOL.

I love comedy points because I'm constantly thrown when I realize that something I said tongue-in-cheek was taken seriously. I feel like a teenage girl using emoticons but probably ought to more often just because of my twisted sense of humor

I award comedy points generously. If something made me smile. Or laugh out loud. Or chuckle. Or, even if it didn't, if I sense an attempt at humor, I award a comedy point. I never thought any one would mind getting any sort of reward point, especially not a comedy point. What says the most, is a complete absence, then you think, maybe I offended someone, or my point is so benign, it does not deserve acknowledgment.

It's such a friendly community here. If I got a comedy point when I didn't intend to be funny, I'd be totally ok with it. I couldn't imagine anyone on this forum awarding a point as a way to laugh at my comment.

I agree it's hardest to award or achieve comedy points. It's so seldom that a response has ONLY the effect of getting a laugh. Usually if someone makes a little joke or pun, it's also along with some constructive criticism. I'd be happy to get a comedy point for making someone smile; I wouldn't take it as indication that my advice was just taken as a complete joke.
I also find therapy points hard to achieve and award. At some level, so much of YLF is therapeutic, isn't it? Comedy and all? (Or is it just me??)

I'm with the other responders. I love getting comedy points even if I'm not meaning to be funny. I know no one here means any harm

I think acknowledgement is the most important part of any of these buttons. Some responses are all - therapeutic, solutions, comedy, uplifting. I just choose the dominant theme as best I can. But a grin does usually earn a comedy from me.

Agree that I am happy to give and get comedy badges and assume they are always welcome. In a similar way I sometimes give therapy badges when someone made me feel better about something even if the comment was not therapeutic in the traditional sense.

I like getting them because they are so hard to get! It's hard to convey humour through only text.

I feel like I get a lot of comedian points. What does that say about me. No one here takes me seriously. Hmph. KIDDING. I don't have a problem either way. I also wish I was more of a stickler about GIVING points, because I often don't bother. Just saying for the record that every single reply I get is great, and sorry for not rating them, but I appreciate them all.

You may give me comedy points at any time, for any reason. You may even mock me, affectionately of course. I do find it helpful if people yell "FAT COW" first in person before they mock me, so I know they're not upset. I may be a cow, but I am not fat, so this is how I know.

Seriously, do not worry about the cow aspect. I have animal medicine things to work out with Cow. Don't ask or I will have to tell my drinking stories... or stories of attempted drinking thwarted by cows.

Oops! I have the comedy icon listed first. Does that mean something? Does the color of the icon mean something? Gee, I'm feeling like I should study up. But no, I would not ever be offended if someone awarded me a comedy point. I don't think I am ever LOL type funny since my humor is more of the dry variety. Or maybe a tad eccentric. Here, since this is a fashion site, I don't take myself too seriously and don't expect others to take me too seriously, especially not after some of the get-up I have sported over the years.

But clients? Yes, absolutely they better take me seriously. After all, that's why they are paying me or at least supposed to be paying me. Brings me to the professional conference sartorial quandary. . . .I'm not presenting. . .Clients won't be there. . .

I've wondered the same thing. I worry that someone will be insulted that I thought their comment was funny when they weren't trying to be funny.

Lol--I didn't even think that comedy points might be inappropriate. I often award them because the poster made me laugh (intentionally or unintentionally.) I hope I haven't offended anyone. FWIW, I'm happy to get comedy points at any time.

I award comedy points generously, too. I figure smiling and laughter are good for us all and should be celebrated. I would never feel offended if someone awarded me a point (of any kind)! Even a comedy point if I meant to be serious. Oftentimes posts are mixed with funny bits and serious bits - so if the funny bit was what the recipient noticed most, that is good with me!

My clients are legal clients; I'm an immigration attorney who does mostly business, family, and naturalization cases. Not deportation or asylum and definitely not Big Law. Lot of women practice immigration -- which is a signal that it pays crappy. And I went through school when women were to dress frumpily so that they would be taken Seriously. Can't look good and be smart at the same time, ya know. Or god forbid, be taken as support staff (which as I well know runs the whole place). So short, younger looking than I am, and occasionally have to contend with clients who say that if they had more money they would go to a *real* attorney, meaning an Anglo male. But I've also had clients who think that Asians and/or women (I'm Asian American) will work better and harder for them so I suppose it all evens out.

Flakey clients I will tolerate, but not those who behave rudely to support staff. I have no sense of humor there and would not hesitate to fire a client. Most people are polite, and really, it takes no more energy to be civil than it does to be uncivil.

I would like to get nothing but comedy points. I am always trying to be funny. Except about my desire for comedy points, then I am always deadly serious.

I'm constantly having to look up what the icons mean. Yesterday my 4 year old decided to "read" Suz's: he went "record, pencil, fire, number one, happy face, Japanese kung fu, toilet, beep, rope, paper, iPod, tick tock, photo". Not in that order at first, originally it was just "toilet".

Donna, I feel sure your support staff will work their butts off for you! They know you know how much you need them, and that you will fight for them when they can't fight for themselves.

I too would never be offended by a comedy appreciation. I've looked at Suz's icons but really ... Where is Suz's toilet? I cant figure out which one it is!!! Critic?

Maybe the owl. Looks a bit toilet like from a distance.
