Cocolion's fault (or inspiration)

After Cocolion's post here I was inspired to get the Eileen Fisher harem pants that I've been stalking for the last few months.

I brought them home today and tried them with a few things:

1: espresso t-shirt (Caslon), faux-fur vest (made by me), brown metallic booties (Donald Pliner)
2: gray silk chiffon blouse (Vince), faux-fur vest, graphite booties (Paul Green)
3: v-neck black t-shirt (Majestic), plaid asymmetrical vest (made by me), black booties (Munro Grace)
4: v-neck black t-shirt, zippered metallic tweed jacket (made by me), black booties (Munro Grace)

I tried pulling up the pant legs to create a bubble skirt, and I liked the look, but didn't get a picture, because the battery ran out (the nerve, huh?!)

What do you all think? I haven't take off the tags yet.

Those are so cool! I love them with the short jacket and the plaid top. I think the vest might be a little long but that' could just be my untrained eye. Fun piece to add to the closet. You can definitely pull them off!

That plaid vest is fantastic. I looked at the photos before reading your post, and when I got to the vest I clicked back over to the post to see where it was from - and I was blown away when I saw you made it! That's exactly the type of item that would inspire me to sew - it's unique and expressive. Did you design the pattern, or can I find this somewhere and make my own??

I like the pants too, of course. One of the things I love about this forum (aside from how amazingly nice everyone is) is that it makes us all a bit braver about slightly unconventional, fashion-forward looks.

Honestly I think the real story here is that you made all of those gorgeous tops! It's not just the ability to sew them, because you certainly have that ability in spades, but to be so creative with the styles and fabrics is amazing. You are one talented woman. Everyone of them look great with your new harem pants.

I'm so glad Denise inspired you to take the plunge, because those pants are just great on you! Once again I'm amazed at your sewing prowess- the tops you made are wonderful!

My favorite here is #3 because I really like a shorter top with the harem pants, but they're all terrific.

I love them! And now I might just have to do some stalking myself. They look fantastic. Comfortable, interesting, super fun. Wow!

I also love the different tops you've made. What a talent. In terms of a look, my favourite is with the plaid vest, but all of these are amazing items.

For myself, I'd go with simpler styling, but that is the minimalist in me. I think this looks super-arty, interesting, and I would expect to see you in an art gallery someplace, but not just as any old gallery goer -- you'd be the one who knew the artist and hung around with that crowd.

They are so cool! And I am again amazed by your sewing skills. My favorite is #3 because I prefer the shorter top with the pants. But you have the height to pull off the longer tops too.

In all honesty, I am not getting the pants, the part that constitute the legs is so short, that it makes for a weird " tent like" crotch point, that is super low too. They look like a sweater worn as bottoms. Umm, I'm for harem pants, just not these ones. you need more of a leg. Since they still have the tags, I would say return. On the othet hand, the tops, gosh the tops. Holy smokes, you are an artist.

Keep! I love all of your outfits pictured, YLF in each harem combo from booties to tops to toppers. Unusual and elegant. I have those PG booties too, and wear the heck out of my EF harem pants every chance I get. I only wish for something as delightful as your fur vest. thx for styling ideas!

I prefer these styled with streamlined, minimalist tops, so for that reason I prefer them with the plaid vest in the outfits you've shown. I think the streamlined, asymmetry works well with them.

I'd like to see them with the grey blouse sans vest.

The bow on the vest, while completely gorgeous, seems to clash with the vibe of the pants.
For the same reason, I think you could do better with the jacket in the last photo. Nothing wrong with said jacket, I just think it's a little more classic and so doesn't really play up the funky, urban, modern vibe of the trousers.

I like your footwear choices here. They look great with a bootie!

Well as always your sewing efforts amaze me. And CocoLion is certainly a good choice for inspiration!

That said, I'm with Zap on wanting to see a different crotch point on harem pants. These read more like a midi tube skirt, which makes me think, "why not just wear a midi?"

But I get that the pants allow more freedom of movement, and they certainly look very intentional as you have them styled! If you feel confident in them I'd keep.

Thanks, everyone, for your thoughtful replies. I am glad to see so much love for my tops and for the plaid vest with these pants. I have another vest made from the same pattern that would go with the pants in warmer weather.

Jorja, thanks for the link. I see in my own photos that I like a shorter top better with these pants, and I also like the black or dark brown booties best, which is in keeping with the advice also.

gryffin, they are fine to walk in, I think. I haven't actually worn them yet, except for photos, though. But I saw the video on the EF site and the EF employees who were wearing them were striding out normally. As to crossing my legs, I'm not sure that would work too well, but I don't cross my legs in pants so much anyway.

Zapotee, I can see why you don't get these particular harem pants. I'm not a big fan of other versions, but I think I like these because they seem more like a hip take on a maxi skirt rather than a kind of pant.

Liz, maybe because this arty style may clash with my arty boho streak. I wondered about the same thing--yes, they're arty and fit "elegant eclectic," but they still might not be right for me. They are something I can wear, but are they a mainline part of my style or a fringe part of my style? And if the latter, do I want to really keep them at this price?

If you do send them back due to the expense, I for one hope you will make some like them yourself and wear them, because my first thought when I saw the photos was How fascinating -- I want to meet this woman! I love the way they look a bit like harem trousers and a bit like a long midi skirt: I think that that is what makes them so cool, in fact. Personally I love a touch of the unexpected in an outfit. (Of course I agree with everyone else about the perfection of your faux fur vest too.)

MovingFashionForward, that's quite a testament to the look--thank you! I was thinking, yes, these wouldn't be that hard to make--but it could be a considerable project, to get the look just right. I'm leaning toward keeping them--I could also try to copy them at some point!
