I took some picture of the both coats in a day light. Excuse mu awful face - no makeup and feel pretty tired.

1-3 - Danier black wool coat
Pros: warm, beautiful thick and soft fabric (wool / cashmere blend), good length for sleeves and overall length is over the knee- unheard of for me! Also the man oversize coat style I was looking for.
Cons: I have a difficult relationship with black. It is not my best color and black coat in winter always felt like adding to the winter gloom...Does oversized style together with black color overpower me?
Also I think it is a bit wide on the bottom (see pic 3) but I think it can be helped by moving some buttons for a closer fit. I got it on sale but it is still pricy ($299 down from $499)

4-6 Zara wraparound coat in charcoal
Pros: I like the dramatic collar which also can be used as a hood. Not black (although I am not sure this grey is my best color either). Pretty warm and the shape seems to be flattering.
Cons: Not as warm and luxurious feeling as Danier but also half the price. The length is above the knee. The sleeves a bit too short. Dramatic collar is a plus but also need some fussing to arrange (I put it on without mirror and see how the collar lays).

I will not say which one I lean towards now - what do you think?

I like both of them, Sveta, but if you're only going to keep one I'd keep the Danier. It's much more classic, fits better, and is higher quality. The length is better both for warmth and to wear over dresses. You can always add a scarf to brighten things up and bring some color up around your face.

I love the Danier on you much more. The simple classic styling with nice subtle detail works well with your aesthetic. It drapes beautifully and the longer length should be more versatile. The sleeve length is also much better.

ETA: You can easily add a colorful or printed scarf with the Danier but it wouldn't be as easy with the Zara neckline.

In case you can't guess, I voted Yay.

will this be your go to coat? or is this a secondary coat?
are you looking for something that you will reach for for the next 5 years, or a you looking for something for now and next year?
if this is your go to coat, i would say the danier, but if this is a fashion coat, that will supplement your other coats, i would stay with the zara.

When I opened this post, I was expecting to prefer the Zara for you. But after reading your impression of each coat and seeing the pics, I vote Danier.

I think the Danier is stunning. It's classic and sounds high quality that would last for years. Even the color is classic and shouldn't be a problem with your top peaking out or a scarf. The Zara I think would date faster and seems fussy, I'm sure I biased because I really dislike fussy.

Danier because of its more classic style and warmer and softer fabric. The other one will be dated so fast it will make your head will spin.

I find that people react to the winter accessories I wear with my coats and jackets. The Zara coat is limiting in that way as doesn't permit much flexibility.

Well, I loved the drama of the Zara, but seeing them side-by-side, my vote is for the Danier. Unless you are getting a high happiness factor when you put on the Zara, the Danier is a more elegant and practical option. And I hear you on black coats in our winters, but a colorful scarf, polished leather boots, and a bright pair of gloves really can change that in a hurry.

Thank you all for your feedback - you helped me to confirm my decision.
I am keeping Danier as I really feel much better and elegant in it by comparison.

It is so you. I cannot tell you, people, how gorgeous she looks in this coat IRL.

These photos absolutely do not do justice to how wonderful it is on you, Sveta. It has a beautiful drape and fall to it. And the leather details, while very subtle, add something very special to it.

Danier from me too - the fit is lovely, the coat itself is beautiful and dramatically understated, and the length is perfect - the Zara looks too short, kinda boxy, and not nearly as high quality. Though I do like the drama of the Zara collar - I think even the Danier is better than the Zara collar.

Danier, the fit is so much better & if the quality is too then that's the one I would pick. I think the black would work really well with your wardrobe & looks better than the grey imo.

Not looking at the comments, I'm voting Danier. That collar is great on you but it looks like it's fussy. The Danier will last you forever.

I vote Danier. Something about the way the collar of the Zara bunches up bothers me in some way. It seems like over time it could get tiresome.

tough call - as I didn't realize the danier was a cashmere blend.... that gives it some bonus points, but even so, that collar on the Zara coat is just so fabulous - it wins hands down. with a pair of scrunched Long Cobalt blue cashmere gloves!!

Danier all the way. I can tell just from the photos that the quality and fabric are better, something about the way it hangs. Plus the more classic style will stand you in good stead for years.

Sveta, my choice would have been the Zara but that is possibly me projecting my style preferences onto you There is no question the Danier looks excquisite on you also.

You know, it was really no brainer after all. Yesterday when I got Danier coat with Suz I was thinking which one to keep...until I looked at them side by side and then I was all clear... I feel much better in the Danier coat!

I really liked the Zara coat on your previous post but seeing the Danier coat more clearly, there really is no competition. The Danier coat is beyond stunning on you and is so regal looking. So glad to hear it's staying

I find the Danier coat to have a timeless elegance about it and on you this is magnified - so so elegant.
The zara is also lovely - but a fun coat.
My nod goes to the Danier - I don't think it will disappoint.

I should have viewed the pics before your description as a double check. I did not think that photos would reveal the difference in quality, but you can really see that touch of cashmere in the Danier. Demonstrates what an aid taking pics can be! Glad you're keeping the Danier.

More confirmation of your choice here. I can see why you were drawn to the Zara, but the Danier is gorgeous on you. Because of the lapel style, you'll always be showing your collar underneath or wearing a scarf, so I don't see the black as a problem. You look stunning in the coat.

Even though these photos are not flattering of Sveta because she is tired, not made up, etc. and almost deliberately just looking as ordinary as possible (for her gorgeous dramatic self, that is) you can see the richness of the fabric and the dye on the black coat. It has a depth to it.

I am feeling especially gleeful because without my magic touch this coat would not be hers! The SA looked for it in her size and could not find it. I went to the rack and discovered it right away. (Frankly, I don't know what the heck the SA was doing because it was right there in plain sight at the back of the rack, but whatever...) It takes a YLF shopper to do the legwork, I guess! All in a day''s work for a Fabber.
