My last purchases Of 2021, but they arrived this week
Until Thursday of this week we were having a warm winter, so many days my puffers were too warm, and I was wearing my jcrew boiled wool coat on repeat. I love this coat, and it’s now 4 years old and I’m trying to split wears so that it keeps going (jcrew still offers it but this years colors don’t appeal).
Anyway, I’ve had my eye on this since Lisap posted about it months ago, and Xmas day it went on sale and I bought it. And a day later I saw this one in BR and something about it made me try it even though it’s a lot of black. The one in store was the wrong size, and I had them order this size for me.
interested in what you think.
Do you have a preference? Like one over the other ?
I have thoughts but I’m sort of conflicted. I’m going to hold my thoughts for a while and see what the collective hive thinks

They're so different that it's hard for me to compare. The ease and the print of the first one is awesome. The second one is a great classic style. I don't even own a full length coat so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Mostly chiming in to say "hi"!

And a bonus WIW. Because after I posted I realized that I’m wearing the Shacket that Lisap also talked about in the same post. No great fashion but lots of warmth for our coldest day so far this winter

I really love that classic Aritzia coat on you, and in general. Great color.

They both look great on you and I could see them working equally well with your wardrobe.

But, if I had to choose only one, I vote olive and NOT just because it is green! I actually love the pattern of the plaid on you, and that collar - but the thing that gives me pause is the belt closure. For ME - the tie/belt can be super fussy, and can wiggle loose as I walk. I am not a fan.

Aritzia’s coats and jackets have been workhorses for me (I have the shacket in brown!), so that would be another tick in favor of the olive. What is the composition of the BR one? I’d look at that, too.

Of the three Finds your older J Crew looks the most classy to me. Of the 2 newer ones I far prefer the olive. The plaid one with its tie looks too much like a dressing gown to me.

I’m a little confused - which coat is too much black ? I only see one black coat which I assume is your original JCrew?

I like both the plaid and the olive ( although I’m not crazy about how that button closure is sitting ) , and because they are so different I’d be tempted to keep them both . I never did buy the Babaton wool blend overcoat despite being obsessed with it last fall . Love the shacket on you too !

Lisap the jcrew is actually navy, the BR is more black than what I have been buying recently

I’m all about plaid right now. But I hate belts on coats and always avoid them. The green one looks really nice, and is nearly all wool which is a plus in my book. I love the color. If you prefer the JCrew, I bet they will have that coat again next year, in new colors.

Belts on wool coats can be a pain because they work their way loose as you move and it's hard to double knot them. (I have no problems with belts on coats made of thinner fabric, e.g. a rain trench.)

I do love the buffalo check type pattern of the BR, though. I like the olive coat also. It is more similar in style to the J. Crew, which may be a consideration if you are after a change.

I like both the check coat and the olive. Which will make the best statement in late winter? The buffalo check will stand out most in a sea of black coats but the olive may be a great little compromise and be just different enough.

I like the olive best. The plaid coat seems overwhelming, that it's wearing you rather than the other way around.

I like the fit of the plaid better, but I think that the checks are too large on your size of person.

Have you tried sizing up on the olive for a slouchier fit? How does the Jcrew fit you?

The shacket is phenomenal. I think the buffalo plaid looks a lot better on you than the olive but that the olive is probably easier to wear… no tie belt, close fitting…

I like the idea of the plaid coat better, but it seems like a bit too big a plaid for you if that makes sense. I would try it with low contrast boots. The olive coat looks good but is less special. Fun shacket!

I like the olive coat, the colour is great on you and seems to be more in proportion with your body length. The check coat is too busy and too long, at least to my eyes!

I don’t love either. There’s something off with the fit of them. And the pattern and color don’t seem like you. I understand the desire (not need) to add to your coat choices but I think you should be patient and wait for a coat you will love as much as your current J Crew coat! I would look again at J Crew; there might be something there. Maybe the classic lady coat (many colors) or how about Angie’s lodge coat in red?

I prefer the plaid coat — I think belted coats can be challenging but it looks really great on you. Something about the fit/button on the olive one seems off somehow.

I like the olive more. The high contrast and size of the plaid feels like a lot, since your coloring is low contrast.

I prefer the olive ... But this could be my bias towards the understated. I think it will stand the test of time longer, bc even though buffalo check is a classic, it is also on trend r.n. so might feel a little off for a while when the trend fades ... Esp since it's such a strong statement on this coat.

FWIW a buffalo check scarf would look fab with the olive!

I also prefer the olive. The plaid feels a bit too much. Probably just me projecting how I feel about patterns at the moment. I like Helena's idea with the plaid scarf

Well, I kind of love the plaid but it is a lot! It's fun with the black/white boots. The olive coat doesn't look like a perfect fit -- maybe a bit tight? I hope Angie will chime in re: fit.

And the white shacket is perfect!

Thanks for the feedback. I prefer the olive coat, but was attracted to the plaid and wanted feedback because I was concerned that I was making the safe choice. I still really like the plaid, but I’m feeling that it’s not right for me, and many of your comments and observations confirmed that. Re the olive coat, interesting it looks to small. It doesn’t feel that way, but i’m going to try it again.

I recall that style has a bit of an asymmetric closure with how the button and lapel sits -no? It makes the button looks like it’s pulling a bit . I tried it on inspire and couldn’t wrap my head around the cut ……

I prefer the plaid coat on you. It’s very distinctive and glam. But you should trust your own feelings. Love your shacket outfit.

Olive coat is pulling at the closure, and the button should be higher.
