I heeded the wise advice on my earlier thread and tackled the collection of coats in our coat closet and in my basement holding zone.

Some of what I’m giving away are old sentimental things from the holding zone that I am ready to part with. One was a jacket from my mom’s house that turns out to have been my sister’s when she was in high school. She doesn’t want it, and it’s a little snug on the hip on me — I think I wore it a couple of times twenty years ago, and it’s corduroy and kind of cute, but it really isn’t the style I want to wear now. Crazy to think it’s 40 years old and still in great shape — it will keep someone warm.

Others were poor fitting or redundant (newer favorites have take their place). One was visibly pilling, ugh.

The only two I have any doubt about letting go are these two in the first two photos, but I haven’t worn either in a couple of years, so I think it’s time to let go. 1) a dark burgundy Laundry wool coat and 2) a short BR white wool coat I bought secondhand probably 7-8 years ago. I’m not overly excited about either one, so I think I will donate them.

Here’s what’s left after the edit:

3) My wool coats - turquoise JCrew pea coat, blue plaid Pendleton, black military-ish coat, and dark forest green Madewell cocoon coat.

4) My teal Burberry trench, my Athleta rain/gear/casual coat, and anorak-ish coat

5) My gear jackets for hiking, running and cycling

6) My puffers - white Zara short puffer, black packable puffer, navy blue Canada Goose short puffer, and long black puffer

7) Wild card/trendy coats - Zara faux fur hooded coat and Avec Les Filles oversized faux shearling

8) My gear/casual vests

9) How my side of the coat closet looks now — I keep some of the out of season lightweight gear coats down in my seasonal storage closet, but even so, this small closet gets pretty stuffed since hubs and I both have coat collections.

Everything that is left gets worn and is loved or useful. If I were to add anything, I think it should be in a fun color or metallic — I have a lot of black and gray already! But I have plenty of variety and never feel like I am lacking the right coat for an outfit.

PS This doesn’t count my outfit completer jackets, blazers, or the long jackets/lightweight coats that I think of almost more as outfit completers than outwerwear — those live in my main closet with the rest of my regular wardrobe. I reviewed the long jackets/coats as well and love all of them, so they are not going anywhere — those are the six pieces in pic 10. Next will be an edit of short jackets and blazers!
