Christmas memories of my mom

I lost my mom back in September and had put off going over and cleaning out her closet. Then I was invited to an "ugly Christmas sweater" party and knew I had to do it because I really wanted to wear the sweater I bought for Mom some years ago! Well, not only did I find the sweater in question, but another fun snowman sweatshirt, as well as her beloved mink coat, and a sparkly navy sequined top, all of which I found occasion to wear over the weekend just past! (Normally I wouldn't dream of wearing fur, but those minks have been dead almost as long as I've been alive! And I though I was wearing it ironically but I was surprised by how much I liked it.)

Do any of you wear any of your mom's clothes, for the holidays or otherwise?

Aw, those pics are great! You wear it all so well, as did your mom.

I don't have much of my mom's clothing -- what I do have is sentimental but very much not my style, so it's packed away in a case in my basement. I do, however, have a lot of her jewelry and wear it frequently.

Hugs to you, sweet lady. I know the holidays are bittersweet after this loss.

My mom gave me her fur 2 years ago and I have no clue what to do with it so it hangs in the office closet. These are wonderful pictures and I am so sorry for your loss.

I’m so so sorry for your loss. How nice you could wear her ugly sweater.

My mother is still wearing her clothes. She’s 95 years old and just gave up driving this year. In the Bay Area! My mother had a sweatshirt with a Scottie on it and gave it to me because we have a Scottie, Mr Skunky (not his real name). And I’ve given her some of my things. For example, I had a boiled wool coat that I gave her, and a lavender wool sweater.

Mary, you look gorgeous in your mother's coat. Not to mention that adorable sweater. How sweet to remember your mom through her clothing. I'm so sorry for your loss. It doesn't matter how old they are, right? It still hits you. And grief comes in such strange ways.

I kept a sweater set that I had given my mom, from Land's End, and I do sometimes wear it! I think of her every time.

My mom loves pretty clothes and always asks to find little something for her. She gave up her heavy fur coats and we both don't know what to do with them ( she wears now my coat with a fur trim since she lost some weight ).

Mary how lovely to see a post from you. I’m so sorry for the loss of your mom. I don’t have any clothing from my mother but I do have 3 quilts she lovingly hand made. I have one on the bed in my spare bedroom. I also have a charm bracelet from my grandmother which I wear to all parties.

I’m so sorry to hear of your recent loss, Mary. How lovely that you took some of your mother’s clothes to wear. I love those Christmas sweaters. My mother, who passed away earlier this year, also had a couple of Christmas sweaters that she wore every Christmas. I didn’t keep those, but my sister and I both kept a number of items from her wardrobe. I also kept some of her scarves—she loved scarves and so do I. I love wearing them.

Absolutely lovely Mary, and my deepest condolences on your loss. You look wonderful in your Mom's things and if I know moms, there's nothing that would make her happier than knowing she gave you something that make you smile!

I have a few thing of my Mom's; mostly I just like to look at them I do have her signet ring that I like to wear, but it's a little big and with the cold weather it fits a little loose, so I'll save it for summer, when swollen fingers make it less likely to slip off!

Sorry about your Mom. The first holiday season following a loss is often difficult, I'm glad you found something useful.

My Mom's clothes wouldn't have fit me, but I did have some of her jewelry, most of which was stolen, even though it wasn't worth much. I did give her jet engagement jewelry to my niece once I had it repaired, and my Dad's wedding ring went to my nephew. I think my sister still has her engagement ring.

I do have lots and lots of photos though. It's fun to look at them and see the fashions she wore through the years.

This time of year can be so difficult when a loved one is not with us. Your mothers sparkly top sounds just right for you. I hope it brings you great happiness and a feeling of closeness to your mom.

Condolences on the passing of your mother. These are such sweet photos. My mother is still alive but I have kept two of my dad’s most-worn sweaters...it’s how I remember him and gives me great comfort. One is folded on a shelf in my closet, in the middle of my own clothing items. I like seeing it every day.

Miss Mary, nice to see you. I’m sorry you’ve lost your mom. It’s nice you can remember her by wearing her “cute” holiday sweater. Great family photo. I wish you a peaceful and happy Christmas.

My mom was much smaller than I am, only 5’2” and very slim, so her clothes wouldn’t have fit me at all. She died 22 years ago, at just the age I am now, when my girls were teenagers. I’ve thought of her often this fall... The times I missed her most were when my daughters got married, and when they had their own babies. She would’ve enjoyed those times.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's great you can wear her Christmas sweaters at this time of year when you may feel her absence the most and even wrap her coat around you for a hug. My mom was always a couple of sizes larger than I, but I have a bit of her costume jewelry and am at this very moment wearing one of her watches.

What a wonderful way to connect with your mother's memory! You look amazing in sparkles and fur. I think vintage fur is going to have a revival as people realize that much faux fur is a environment disaster. (Of course people could just forgo fur, but I wouldn't bet on that.)

Mary, I am so sorry for your loss but you look great in your mother's holiday sweater. I don't have any of my mother's clothes but still miss her after over 10 years, especially during the holidays.

I am sorry too, Mary. Those are lovely pics of her. My Mum died 20 years ago when I was only 38. She was 79- had been an older mother. My children were quite young- 8, 5 and 2.
I slowly got rid of her things but still have a small number of clothing items and do wear her jewellery. I love her “opal” necklace- they’re fake opals, but very good fakes and so pretty.

So sorry about the loss of your mother. My mother passed away when I was 24 and I don’t remember what happened to her clothing. I do have her jewelry which I treasure and wear. It always reminds me of her.
