Canada Goose vs Burberry--forsake fashion for warmth?

Anybody here live in a cold climate AND have a strong aversion to puffers? For those who bought Canada Goose, is the warmth worth the sacrifice in looking fashionable in a winter Burberry Trench? The Canada Goose coat I have in mind is plain black, down-filled polyester with a trench belt vs a Burberry wool/cashmere trench. Happy holidays!

How cold is a cold climate?

I have a puffer - and it keeps me snuggly toasty warm at -53 windchill I doubt Burberry can do that.

BTW; I also hated puffers for the longest time - but if you shop around, there are ones that are less "puff" than others

Alternative - get someone to drop you off near the front doors I may be employing this strategy in the future.

@ lyn: chicago, near the lake....so cold! sadly, i have no one to chauffeur me around, otherwise i might ditch the boots as well.

@ vildy: so true. i was secretly hoping that an 80/20 wool/cashmere blend would rival a puffer/parker, but i guess this isn't the case...unless you layer with a woolen blazer underneath?

Oh, you really *need* a puffer. You have to be able to keep warm! I doubt you could find any trench that could rival down for warmth, unless it's lined with faux fur....hmmm. That's a thought. How do you feel about a full-length faux fur coat? Too *evening* for work?

One of our members, Krishnidoux, has a Canada Goose puffer. They are extremely well made and warm.

But any good quality puffer should keep you warmer than a Burberry trench. In more weather conditions.

I don't know the fill they use or the quality of the outer shell, but the company is based in Montreal so you would think they would know cold conditions.

It looks much better on than in the picture.

A wool/cashmere coat will be warm, for sure, especially layered with a wool blazer. Or with additional layers, e.g. silk cami, merino sweater, wool blazer, then coat. But in Chicago I think you would really need a windproof layer as well, whatever else you were wearing.

I think the wool trench will not help you if you have wet-cold (i.e.: coming off a lake); I'd vote for the Puffer.

Here's the thing about bulky layers under a fitted wool coat: it looks like *you* are
bulky. Plus it feels very restricting. I think that when the coat itself - the puffer - is
known to be bulky, it just looks like a person wearing a bulky coat. Plus to me they
feel very non-restricting.

I live where it's plenty cold (in MN) and really disliked puffers for the longest time. Because of what I was seeing others post on YLF, I finally spent some energy trying on various puffers, and not just the practical black and brown ones

I found one (in cobalt blue!) that worked for me at a Land's End Inlet. It is SO warm and some days ARE puffer-worthy.

So, if you need a warm coat, start looking around while there is still selection. Post pics of the contenders and get help finding one that is functional AND flattering.

P.S. You live where you deserve more than one winter coat. So, after you have winter survival in order, you have my permission to start stalking the perfect Burberry winter coat too. . . !!

I'd take warmth over style any time, aand as others have suggested, you can find some stylish puffers. Lands' End had some nice ones too, and I think they're on sale now.
