BR eggplant blazer:which size, if any?

Today I went and tried on the BR eggplant blazer that was a recent Angie pick. The fabric is really nice, soft but substantial, and the color is the exact shade of plum that I adore (you can see it's a pretty close match to my plum bag which is in the foreground of the photos). The new trend toward shorter and more shaped blazers is also a godsend for me.

Anyway here are two different sizes. The first 2 photos are the 10, and the second are the 8. No pics of the back because I couldn't get one without contortions, lol, but they both looked ok to me from the back.

Do you think the stance of the single button is ok? I would probably mostly wear it unbuttoned but I would like it to look good buttoned as well for more formal things like interviews etc. petite is not an option as sleeves would be too short.

This is beautiful on you, Diana! I vote the smaller size unbuttoned. I adore this color too, but the jacket is too short for the long-waisted me.

I love the color for you. And I'm completely with Tanya -- go for the smaller size but don't button it (no one ever does even in interviews!)

I love the color, and it's a great length on you. I think the 10 falls a little better. How does it feel across the shoulders and back? Might you wear it over a sweater or a couple of layers? If so, I'd stick with the 10.

I love the colour and I am also glad to see the return of shorter jackets. Does one size feel better than the other? The 8 is more fitted and I like that look better but the 10 looks fine. No one buttons their jacket.

Beautiful color and jacket silhouette. If you want the option of buttoning, I prefer the 10 as the button is close to the bust line. You look fab!

I know I'm late in responding and you've probably already bought one, but if you're going to button it, I have a slight preference for the 10, but I think either will be fine.

Beautiful jacket on you, Diana -- I love it. I think I agree with Karie on the size but it's tough to call...it seems to be lying smoother overall but it could just be the try on rush and your shirt sticking; I know that sometimes happens to me in a change room.

Love the jacket on you. It is hard to say but I think I would go with the 10 - the fabric lays slightly easier which looks more elegant to me.

I'm with JAileen. I don't see a huge difference between them. I would go with the most comfortable. This jacket really makes you look curvy and wonderful. I think it's very flattering in both sizes and I like it both buttoned and unbuttoned.

I love this colour on you and what a perfect match with your handbag. I prefer the 10 because I do like to button up a one-button jacket particularly if I am wearing a sheath dress underneath. I love it with you jeans and think you will have a lot of styling options with this jacket.

I just want to chime in and say that the color is gorgeous on you! Make sure that the size you choose fits properly in the shoulders. There's no need to button it, so don't worry about that.

Great jacket - I love that color! I don't wear blazers much but I'm so tempted to check out that blazer just due to the color. I think the 10 looks slightly better but it's hard to tell fit from a photo.

So the majority seem to have a slight preference for the 10, but a significant minority (including Angie) says 8. It gets more even if we're talking about only wearing it unbuttoned. I'm still undecided. (For the record, I did not buy either yesterday, I am going to order it online once I decide, and probably wait for a ubiquitous BR coupon to appear. It no longer seems to be a BR pick so I think coupons might work on it?)

So the thing is, the 8 fits better in the shoulder, lower arm, and waist, but (as per today's blog post) the upper arm is very slightly snug. It doesn't hamper movement but does bunch a little with the long sleeved shirt under it. The 10 is slightly big in the shoulder (but doesn't droop or anything) and I find the lower arm a little too roomy. On the other hand, the fit over the bicep is better. It's also a little boxier and I do prefer the more fitted shape of the 8. (I feel that a lot of blazers tend to look a little bit too big for me even when they're the right size because they're not fitted enough.... )

You all are right that I'll probably never button it. I'm not a buttoned blazer type, and frankly if I need to go super formal for something I'd wear the much more formal black blazer from my suit.

Janet, I probably wouldn't wear thick layers under this blazer. This is a medium weight shirt and I wouldn't go much heavier. I might add a cami under or a sweater vest over but it wouldn't impact the arm fit, which is the tight point on the 8. I don't like the feel of layering thick sleeves (like on a sweater) under woven blazers so wouldn't do it anyway.

Ack. Still undecided. Maybe I need to order both and try them on with a bunch of things?

I do find it can be useful to have both sizes st home. No pressure. Try with tops and bottoms.
That said , sometimes I have to " commit" to either the snugger or looser look. Also that sometimes it is helpful to think in terms of style power and not longevity or stocking my closet. What do I want to wear now and how look now. This might favor the smaller size, but not necessarily. For example, for some tops I am still favoring the looser look if want a certain drape. But then for jackets while I don't want shrunken, I know that neatly fitted looks better than any hint of being too big anywhere , or it's immediately f_____. Not a lot of wiggle room. And I ALWAYS feel I'm between 2 sizes!

You just described the problems I have with blazers.
I have to say that I bought ( and still have it) a blazer on my bigger size and the roominess ( is this a word) of the sleeve close to the wrist makes me feel much more frumpy than the blazers that are in the lowest number and are slightly stretched on the upper arms.

Sometimes when I can't decide on a size, I take both of them to the store and ask the sales staff which they prefer. Sometimes they can see things in person that are difficult to tell from a photo. But then you'd have to buy both sizes when you order, which might be a pain.

Oh, a quick thought--would it be possible to slightly move the button on the smaller blazer so that it gives just a little more space when the blazer is buttoned? I thought that the 10 looked better when the blazer was buttoned, but if the button on the 8 can be moved, maybe that would fix the problem.

I have the same problem with blazers, Diana. This one looks lovely on you. I don't see any 'frump' factor with size 10... it seems to fit perfectly well ----both buttoned & unbuttoned.

Perhaps you should order both and try them with a bunch of your long sleeved tops.
