Despite great reviews.

They fit well - very well in fact - weren't see through, and are VERY comfortable. But THEY LOOK LIKE I'M WEARING LEGGINGS. Not the vibe I'm after. And tight on the calves - I have a narrow 13 inch calf. It's ridiculous.....

Good to know about these styles, Angie. After your post, I went looking for white boyfriend or wide-legged jeans, and didn't come up with anything I need to try at the moment. Most are skinny styles. The truth is, I'm pretty well covered with white/off white jeans at the moment anyway. (Thank goodness, given the options.)

That must be very annoying, Angie. I can only imagine how narrow the calves must be if they are too-tight on you. Ridiculous, really. I hope you manage to find something better-fitting.

Angie - just skimmed your post but this was a question I was going to ask. I was looking for new black jeans (of course) and Ummlila had recommended the ones from madewell. They were adorable and super comfy but they were jeggings not jeans. I would never wear them without a tunic. Sizing up would not help. So I actually bought the gap girlfriends and they are super nice for the money just not super exciting although they fit fabulously well and look great. But how can you tell? I have bought gap skinnies and sized up and they are like skinny boyfriends but not everything comes with so much stretch even when cotton content is high I can not tell online how to evaluate this. Since I do honestly all my shopping online (cooking for a crew, work, and care for home and my surviving mom's/mom in law and uncle means no time for bricks and mortar ever) any suggestions to weed out the jeggings?

Too bad they didn't work but thanks for the reminder to just MOVE ON when that happens. I'm fast coming to the conclusion that the fewer expectations one has about sizing, even for known/familiar brands, the faster one can evaluate and move on. You just have to expect everything NOT to fit, try several sizes/styles, and then be happy when it does. Some brands even change the sizing of a repeat style/model from year to year. The predictability and consistency is just not there.

Annoying! You can't tell from the photos. Hmmm.

My dream jean is not a skinny but not a straight. It tapers a bit at the hems but does not suck the calves and ankles. I think this is why I love slim BF fits so much -- while a bit loose, they more or less conform to this ideal.

My current favourite white summer jeans are the CoH Elsa's. They are a few years old though. They have a button front, which is a bit finicky but okay. They are mid-rise. And they are right between a skinny and a cropped slim straight. They fit me pretty much like the model and were TTS for me. Not sure if they are still available anywhere.
