You could wear any of these, they all look good! I personally love #20, but it's probably just personal preference - I love halter tops and the slight retro styling - plus I feel this one draws attention upwards, not that there is anything wrong with your bottom half, just as a matter of framing you/your face, I like the detail in this top. Again as a matter of personal preference, I feel going with solid black would be a missed opportunity as it looks more like boring sports gear/underwear... perfectly fine just not the fun, body positive look I think you are going for!

I meant to add though, that the halter style can get uncomfortable for me (I do have larger breasts though, so it's a lot of weight being supported by my neck, YMMV). Since I believe you plan to be quite active, you may want something more comfortable, or maybe a second top in a different style.

My picks: 1, 20, 14 ... the one Angie likes, I definitely don’t like the black and it’s hard for me judge that one because of it.

I really like both teal suits, the solid and the polka-dot. The botanical print in 14/15 is good too. They all look great, but did any stand out as particularly comfortable? Best range-of-motion / staying put?

La Ped, I joked about wanting a ball to throw around, did a little bit of moving, but probably not as much as I should’ve. It seemed to me that the red one, with cups set further apart, would be better at keeping me covered; the SA said the opposite; that people pop out towards the inside when they’re playing volleyball or whatnot. I got the feeling the volleyball example was not purely theoretical. So the red suit might not be the right choice.

The black and white one is also low down on my list, partially because I don’t get tan, and the b/w doesn’t have the same effect on pale skin, and partially because the cups are actually a bit big on me. They are staying in place and have the right shape while they are dry, but I don’t really fill them. On the other hand, Gillian Rose hit exactly what I like about this suit—no wires, no padding, none of the fussiness. I’ve been thinking about that since she wrote it. She’s right about me not wanting “fuss” and that I do want to be able to play.

Cat2’s choices, the yellow one and the b/w, do the best at avoiding that “mumsy” look, as Synne called it, of too much fuss and padding. I worry that I’m teetering on the edge of that fashion mistake so many of us recognized—talking ourselves into something that isn’t quite right—with the padded ones.

It’s too bad the dark green one is showing up as black, no matter how I fiddle with the photo. It really is a handsome suit. Then again, it’s already out of the running because of the price. Jackie Onassis has not invited me to visit her in Skorpios and I will not be spending part of every afternoon for the next few years watching my little one at the community pool, so I can’t justify paying that much.

The consensus between the SA and me was that the teal suit and the blue floral were the best. I’m not sure what to make of the low resonance of the floral one here. Part of me wants to shrug it off as that suit not photographing well, but if I do that, then there isn’t much point asking for your assistance. [ETA: Firecracker did like it, and Rachylou and laPed; that’s not “nobody”!] N, Angie, Helena, Nikki, LaPed, and Rachylou all agree on the teal one (#20).

What I have gathered from this so far:
I can wear a “real” bikini—but want to keep it real as far as behind-the-scenes wires and padding.
Suits with buttons or ties to make the bottoms smaller on the side look better when I use that thing to make the sides smaller—but it isn’t just the skinny side that matters. The very dark green suit also looks good, and it has a wide side. The difference is that it comes up further on my torso, so the leg opening is still at an angle. I want that leg-lengthening effect.
Triangle tops and halters work well for me; I’m not concerned about the weight on my neck, because I don’t have much umm, weight. But I appreciate Jules’ warning. I see the point about the teal suit drawing attention to my face, am not sure if that’s the placement of the straps, the color connecting with my eyes, or something else.
I wish I’d tried true bandeaus.
The other tops—I don’t know what to call them—with straps that go over my shoulders in a conventional way are fine too. I didn’t pick up anything in particular about what placement of the straps is best, other than that the yellow suit has movable straps that can cross in the back or be straight; crossed would help it stay up. Darn that money thing!

I don’t know what to do with those lessons, if I should pick one of these suits or if I should take the lessons and go to H&M or Target as Synne and Kkards suggested. The cpw of those suits would make more sense....

You get what you pay for, FI, when it comes to a bathing suit/bikini. I think you should consider yourself worth the investment based on the brief you described at the top of your post.

I shelled out for a high-end bikini (at a specialty shop) 15 years ago, and it continues to serve. I might only wear it 10x a year, but amortized over 15 years (and still going) is pretty good CPW - besides making me feel great when I wear it. Mine is patterned with black in the mix. I picked up a plain black bottom for ‘mix-and-match’ with the top. Mostly it goes to the beach, but I put it in my suitcase ‘just in case’ and have worn it for a dip in hotel pools, a hot spring, and jacuzzis. Once you have it in your closet, you will find opportunities to wear it - and feel super every time you do.

The solid teal and teal polka dot get my vote for best of the lot. Flatters pale and tanned skin alike. Get both and mix and match the tops/bottoms.

Carla, you sound like you’re warning me away from something, but I can’t figure out what it is. We are both talking about cpw. If I spend over $250 on a swimsuit, I’d have to live to be 100 to get it down to $1/wear, and even that seems a bit much, compared to a $45 workout suit that gets an hour of hard wear several times a week for months or a year. I doubt it would get 10 wears per year, so am calculating based on 5/year.

Per your last paragraph in the post above mine - ‘get one of the suits you tried on’ - I don’t think you will find the fit or quality at H&M or Target.

PS: you might wear a fitness suit for an hour or two lane swim, but you are likely to wear your vacation bikini for 6-8 hours (or possibly more). It’s like comparing running shoes and party shoes.

Carla, the comparison to running vs party shoes is spot on! It seems you party harder /longer than I do.

I used to waterski, and found the halters with ties at both the neck and back best for keeping everything in place. The tops with padding are flattering, but take forever to dry because you are hauling around a couple of sponges. The bandeau tops with the middle tie are the worst for sporty activities; they only stay up if they have a lot of boning, which isn’t comfortable.

Cat2, so you mean bandeaus without an additional strap around the neck? My blue one would’ve fallen down if I did anything but sit in the chair without the strap (so I usually used the strap). Dragging around sponges, ewww! What do you think of 14-16?

I think you should get one of these because a good looking bikini is worth gold. Which is the blue floral? The tropical print two tone... I think that’s 14? Which are padded?

I think it’s definitely worth trying on some lower priced options for comparison. You may find something very similar that makes you happier because the cpw will be more reasonable. Or it may help you see why the boutique suits are priced the way they are.

For myself, I enjoy having a pretty large rotation of mid-priced swim separates (2-3 each tops and bottoms). Works better for me than having one “suit to rule them all” as I’d probably be precious with it — and can’t stand putting on a damp suit!

All of my bikini tops came with removable “sponges”; I took them out immediately for the dry-time reason cat2 cites and have never put them back in. But I save them in my underwear drawer “just in case”.

1 and 20 get my vote. You rock a bikini! But yes to having a halter style as an option if you'll be very active.

These look fab on you! I like the fit and pattern of #1. #20 the teal is great with your complexion and seems to fit very well. I also really like the black one, and the design is unique--but I personally love a good black suit, classically sexy to me

Rachylou, I wish I’d paid more attention to the padding! In the back of my mind, I was probably assuming that I’d take them out, just like I do with workout tops. But of course, that changes the shape of the top.

LaPed, lol, I know exactly what you mean about saving them. Also about not putting on a wet suit. No matter what I get, I will take the older suit I posted earlier on this trip, so that I have a change. I generally like to rotate around my wardrobe, so it makes sense that I do similar on smaller scale with swimsuits; the drying time is just one more reason to do so.

Suntiger, I know you also like to be active. Thanks for weighing in.

Thanks, Rebekahphoto! 1 & that super-dark green one would be it if I had that kind of money to toss out on suits (plural, because of drying issue) to wear a couple times a year. The teal (20) might be the one now. Not sure yet...

Yes definitely better to have a change of suit.

All this talk of suits is really making me want to go on a beach holiday in the south of France haha. Maybe 2022? Wonder when we will get this virus under control.

N, I’ll meet you there!

South of France
*packs suitcase*

Suntiger, there’s room on my beach sheet for you

I’m currently trawling Breuniger.com for suits based on what I learned today. Good discounts, but hard to find a match. A familiar story, I know.

I need linguistic help. Does “gefuttert” mean “lined” or “padded” when it refers to a bikini?

Yeah, construction and ties like 20 would be great for the top. As noted by others, the color is terrific, really unique. The bandeau middle strap won’t keep the cup region from slipping down, and over time the bandeau fabric tends to stretch and give you sag you don’t have.

FI, you definitely have a bikini body, and are spoiled for choice!

You can hardly go wrong, but my favorites and #1 and #17.

I'd really say you can't go wrong with any of these. You look great in all of them! (I have the same kind of rear end, lol.)

My absolute fave is pic 20. Now I'm off to read all the comments!

Kate, you have to scroll down to watch the little video here! https://hellogiggles.com/news/.....kini-body/ I’m a real believer that the way to have a bikini body is to have a body and put a bikini on it. The SA was wonderful at pulling out what I needed. (Conversely, my sister, who is 5’6” and maybe 100 pounds, sent me a bikini pic last night in which she looks fat. Hilarious proof that yes, the suit really does matter)

Gigi, we are legion! Of all the things that supposedly happen to women’s bodies at a certain age, saggy-pancake-butt is the one I relate to most. And that takes me right back to the right bikini and a good fit.

Contemplating paying for even one of the moderately-priced options here, I realized I might be able to afford something by the designer from whom I posted a few suits earlier, Andrea Iyama. Nope, not those, but she does have this in stock and in that same price range. https://www.andreaiyamah.com/p.....#038;_ss=r
She doesn’t have quite as many suits on the site right now as I’ve seen in the past, but I encourage people to check her out. She is very size-inclusive, and shows many of her suits on a couple different models. For this suit, she has one model who is 5’10” size S on top & bottom, and one who is 5’8” XXL on top and XL on bottom. Looking at those photos, it’s obvious that she doesn’t just add more fabric to existing suits—they are clearly intended for the proportions of larger women’s bodies. Her suits are almost always out of the ordinary, refreshing ideas on how else to dress a woman’s body.

Suntiger and FashIntern i'll see you there as long as you don't mind watching a couple of rowdy kids whilst I sip cocktails hahaha.

N, when we lived in coastal Georgia for a year, I honestly did dump my 3-year old on strangers so I could go play in the waves!! We sidled up to a family that had been eyeing my son’s very cool dump truck, offered to play together, built some sand castles with them, and then I’d very casually say “I’d like to get in the water; do you mind if he stays with you?” And I went into the waaaaaaaaves! I love waves much rougher than my little one could take, and swam off for 15-20 min of bliss. He survived every single time.

I love an uni color like nr 8,17 and 20 the most grown up and edgy on you-(pls leave the black ones for us, larger sizes!:-))

For what is worth, I never pay a lot of money for a bikini. They just don’t last long in my opinion. I often ruin the seat of bottom part by sitting on rough surfaces, I get stains from sunscreen, and chlorine in pools ruins the fabric and fades the colors.

Regarding the padding, for me it is not a deal breaker - I just take it out. It is usually removable.

Lyn, I love your dash-of-color, well coordinated looks. Please don’t forego them for the beach (or pool). And thanks for your comments on the suits.

Anchie, now there is some serious wisdom! You are so correct about the kinds of dangers I am likely to put my suit through. Earlier in this thread, I mentioned my bottoms catching on something and ripping open. And I spend enough time in the water that the fabric of my suits often eventually disintegrates, and if there are rocks to scramble up and dive off of, that’s what I do. Thank you for your comment.
