Hi Everybody!

I went to the mall today to try on a couple of things--the ivory biker jacket that Angie linked to yesterday on her post, and the tweedy "Chanel" style jacket and cardi that Julijuli and Tanya found for me at White House Black Market.

Here is the biker jacket. I really like it, it's just the style of biker I was looking for--no zippers or anything, very clean, but I'd like a second opinion (in case it looks better on me in my head than reality). I can't decide between the black and the cream, either. I'm leaning slightly towards the cream, but the leather isn't very heavy, and it seems like it scratches easily (there was already a bit of damage on the cuff of the one I tried on). I know this can be fixed at a shoe place if I were to ever scratch it, but it's just something to think about.

Here's the WHBM jacket. I'm not sure the collar or the breast pockets on this WHBM jacket will work for me. Now that I've had this style of jacket on my body, I'm thinking that a truly collarless version with either slit or no breast pockets would best (I think the hip one are okay though), but what do you all think?

The cardi sleeves were too short for my arms--I think they were meant to be bracelet length, but on me they just looked like my sleeves were shrunken. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestion, Juli! While I was there trying on the jacket though, I tried on this dress. I was thinking it would look really good under the biker jacket (hee hee) or my red longer v-neck cardi with my black patent belt over the top of it all:

I like the biker jacket - prefer the cream. I think it would integrate better with the rest of your wardrobe and be more versatile. Perfect arm length (that third thumb knuckle - I've been paying attention to this lately!)

Not crazy about the Chanel jacket on you. Do agree collarless would be better, but overall, there's just something a tad ... old-ladyish ... about this style on you! Maybe better in one of those versions that has the unfinished hems? I don't know. Maybe I'm not being helpful (lack of glucose in my brain because I'm waiting for DH to get done his yard stuff so we can go out to eat).

I thought you were right on Shiny. I also prefer the cream jacket, but not sure I like the way the collar stands out. I think you can do better.
Also I thought the other was too old ladyish for you. My eye went right to the false pockets which I thought jumbled the look up.
I saw a picture of Katie Couric in one recently. Was it People Magazine? I noticed how beautifully finished the pockets were. That's why my eye went directly to the pockets on this one. I think this kind of jacket has to be impeccibly (sp?) made.

I like the black and the cream jacket. Probably prefer the black because it seems more "classic" to me that way. The Chanel jacket looks nice on you, but it does feel too old. The strapless dress is adorable on you. It spotlights your porcelain skin and I would love it with the black biker jacket and maybe pearls.

First of all, I love that strapless dress! It fits you perfectly.

For the jackets, I like the cream one on you better. However the sleeves look a tad too long to me, where is the third knuckle again? Maybe I'm missing something here...

My favorite is the cream biker jacket. I like the way it looks with your skin coloring & hair. Although, maybe the black would give more of an edge? I think the Chanel jacket is too matronly for you. (you have such a great style and it's definitely not matronly!) I love the strapless dress and think it would be great with the biker jacket.

Ana, I prefer the cream jacket on you as well. I don't know where the third knuckle is, but the sleeves appear a tad too long to me as well.

I agree with the others about the jacket. I think the one you linked to a while back (that Beyonce was wearing I think) would look better on you and not so matronly.

That dress is very nice! I could see you getting a lot of use out of that piece

Thanks for the input so far, everyone! This is very helpful for me.

For the record, I do feel that the sleeves are a bit too long, but I don't think I've found a jacket yet that has fit me properly in regards to sleeve length. I have short legs and short arms, but they are not so short that petite sizes will work for me (plus my torso is "regular" sized). Personally, it doesn't bother me too much (I guess I've just gotten used to it). Having the sleeves shortened on this jacket would be difficult and expensive because of the cuff detailing, though. Another thing to think about.

Ana, I really like the cream jacket on you. The sleeve is a bit long, but I'm not really put off by it (and I don't know what this third knuckle thing is that everyone is talking about). I'm not really a fan of the tweedy jacket. I find the shoulders way too boxy and it looks too stiff and uptight. Better with the collar tucked in, but still not doing it for me.

As for the dress, it is GORGEOUS. I love it on you. I love love love the brushy floral style. It's spectacular. would look great with a little colorful cropped cardi.

Love the biker jacket and while they both look great, I have a slight preference for the cream one given just how drop dead gorgeous you look in cream and white. The tweedy jacket doesn't look that great with the collar but looks quite nice with the collar down (8). The dress is killer.

Late and just walked 4 miles to dinner and back with DH who's now snoring but I just want to clarify:

If I am understanding Angie's sleeve-length guidance, the jacket is PERFECT sleeve length and *not* too long...

I hope Angie chimes in because sometime tomorrow I'm intending to take two jackets for sleeve shortening so I am hoping I have got this right myself....

"Third knuckle" I found confusing but I think it means the joint at the very base of your thumb. (I think there's actually a palm-reader's term for this part of the palm... I just don't know what it is).

Here are my 2 cents: I would absolutely 100% go for a cream biker jacket - either this one (which I like very much, although I did wonder about the sleeves as well) or a different one if you decide the sleeves aren't working. For me it's not even a close race - you look so good in cream, and it's just so much more "Ana" to me, very classy but still a funky edge to it. I don't really see you as a black biker jacket kinda gal.

I don't like the WHBM jacket on you, you can do so much better. Agree with the "matronly" comment.

LOVE the dress! So chic. Hope you'll get it!

I also vote for the cream biker jacket, totally gorgeous on you. The sleeves are fine in my opinion. Love the dress on you too, so pretty!

Even though i found the Chanelesque jacket , I do not like it on you - too matronly. I think you'll probably need something a bit funkier.

I agree that the jacket looks a bit matronly. I think this type of jacket probably looks best on a pretty pear. I think San and Dani made good points--I'm going to have to be very picky about this style because of my body type and age. It will have to be very tailored, and fresh. Maybe I should look for colors other than black and white tweed? I just thought that combination was classic and would go with anything, which is why I picked it (plus brown tweed isn't really my thing). I wanted to try the Express jacket Tanya tried, but they didn't have it at the Express I went to yet. But I'm going to hold out for something great, I think, even if I can't get it this year.

Brendan said he liked the black best because it looked tough. I really like the cream biker jacket, though, because I think it is more "me," as Antje pointed out.

The dress is really fun. I admired this look in the J. Crew catalog:

And I've been figuring out a way to recreate it. I'm not sure a sheath dress would be good on me (pencil skirts are very restrictive in the heat, too), but I think this one might do the trick.

DEFINITELY the cream...no doubt about it. You are meant to wear cream. I can't get over how perfectly it fits you in the shoulders.

I don't care for the WHBM jacket. I've never been a big fan of that Chanel style. It reminds me of Joan Rivers.

Dress is very pretty....do you have occassion to wear it?

Yeah, I'd wear it for just everyday stuff--going to school, etc. I'd always cover it up with a cardi or jacket, and pair it with flats (most likely).

There is this one by Milly that I admired (online) during the NAS. Our store doesn't have it, so I haven't gotten a chance to try it on:

I like the solid cream color with the black detailing. I can't decide if it would be cute or matronly as well, though.

Ana, do a Google Image search on "chanel jacket" then flip through the pages and you'll see several images of a blonde model in a stunning cream jacket... she's sprinkled throughout the web in various poses ....

The cute thing is that she has this expression on her face that is just so YOU... you have this way of facing the camera eye-to-eye ... it's so confident .... I'm officially coining it "the Ana'tude."

I’m with the lasses. Hands down the cream biker. It’s softer. I’m glad I inspired the look for you, or at least I think I did? (I’m taking credit for it anyway!)
However, I think you can pull off a black biker too, but not this one. You need a black biker with a softer edge.

Love the strapless dress! I tried on the Milly jacket. Very sweet. Too boxy for me and not worth the alteration. Try it and wait for the sale.

You definitely inspired the look, Angie! I think I will go with the cream, then. I am interested in a black one as well--what should I look for? When you say, "softer," do you mean ruffles or something?
