bartending day shift NYE - pants or skirt? asking over 40's especially

Hi! I am thinking ahead to my New Year's shift and have a somewhat tacky, but perfect for the occasion, sparkly champagne top. In the past, I had worn it with an a-line mini. That was before 40 though. Should I go with my zipper mini and tall boots in the name of festivity and tips (lol) or play it down with black J brand skinny jeans? I have no problem wearing minis that hit mid thigh and I think my legs are in good shape, it's just that I will be in a sea of 20 and 30 somethings. Your thoughts?

No worries Mo, you have the legs to pull it off no matter what sea you're swimming in. It's bartending, it's New Years Eve either would work but I kind of like the boots and skirt.

The only downside to the skirt that I can see is that you'll tick off some of the younger patrons because you look better : )

Knowing me, I'd go with the pants...but I think you can definitely wear the skirt.

No, I take that back. I might wear the skirt with tights and boots. Keep in mind I am lots older than you. So if I would go that far....

I'd go with the skinnies, & they are easier to work in imo. I think you would look fab in the skirt in a different setting.

Mo, how do you see yourself and is it costume that helps for tips, that sort of thing ? 'cause that's pretty mini. So I'm not sure this is a fashion question or a business/marketing one.

Mo -- as one of the few people (or maybe the only person) who has met you in public, I will say go for the mini. First of all, you do not look like you are 40-something, you look like you're in your 30s. Second, go for the tips. (And I don't think your outfit is tasteless at all, I think it's perfect for NYE. Why not dress up a little with a mini.)

This is reminding me that I need to wear my bust and waist emphasizing dirnl again when we serve German ... tips are so much better. He he.

It's both, Unfrumped. I want to make money, but I don't want to make a fool of myself lol. I realize it might depend on weather, too. It's been colder than normal lately. Also at issue is that I am working a day shift, not night. Nighttime seems more glitzy appropriate and more short skirts and dresses come out than during the day.

I agree about the tips. And goodness knows you have the legs for it. So I would say wear the skirt but get a pair of tights in case it is so darn cold you can't stand it.

Mo, you've absolutely got the bod to wear the skirt. Make no mistake. But I think, given that you asked the question, that you already know the answer. You have basically said that you don't want to look like you're "competing with the young 'uns". And while the outfit you have assembled is not particularly risque, at least in terms of it being low-cut (I don't know how tight the top is), if you're wondering about looking too young, well....

OK, let me see if I can explain. Don't get me wrong. You look fantastic; you know I think that, and I wouldn't say it if it were not true. And I'm roughly the same age as you, and I also still wear mid-thigh minis. Like you, I'm not shy about my legs. Nothing wrong with rocking it if you've got it. But it's all in the details. When I wear minis that short, I do it with tall boots that are flat, and a top that has ample coverage and is not tight at all, so that it is abundantly clear that while I am aware of being in possession of a young-looking body, I am also comfortable with my age. Does that make sense?

Elisabeth, makes total sense to me. The boots are tall and flat and the top is not bodycon, so it basically ticks the same boxes you mentioned. That said, I will make final decisions once I actually try it all on as the date gets closer. I asked for honesty, and that's what I want - thanks!

I was going to vote for the skinnies - and for a practical reason.

I used to bartend myself (years ago), and I remember how messy the job really is - because of this, I much prefer pants over skirts for bartending.

I am not sure if you have to open the bar or not, but thank goodness you don't have to close.

I think skinnies are going to be a whole lot more practical and comfortable, imo.

Even leaving practicalities aside, I'd still vote for the skinnies. It's not an age thing...it's more a case of being comfortable *and* stylish. While the mini looks fabulous on you, it's not necessarily the most comfortable thing to wear while tending bar. I think being comfortable and being able to move around *at ease* goes a long way in terms of looking and feeling fab.

I think you will look and feel better in something you can move around in, so imo - go for the skinnies.

It would make a big difference if the skirt was tight. If not, maybe wear it with fleece-lined tights and the boots...if you are comfortable wearing this Sheer black sounds too evening.

Bartending NYE, you are not expecting anyone to take you seriously, you are suppose to rock it and have fun....Tights and the boots make it workable! I consider myself a conservative 47 year old, but not frumpy... There are occasions that warrant your wild side to shine and baby, this is one of them. Go for it with confidence....
