Audrey Hepburn, Laura Petrie and me (WIW)

There have been some great discussions here recently about timeless wardrobes, forever pieces, and dressing as age…and all of that went thru my brain as I took this outfit photo last week.

It felt to me like this was a timeless outfit, and I was thinking this was an Audrey Hepburn outfit, and then Laurie Petrie popped into my brain as well. And yet, when i goggled images, i came up with similar looks and yet looks that were/are far different. And so I’m reminded that timeless does not mean the same over time. Each of us, (can I really be putting myself and those to iconic women in the same category), is wearing a version of the same outfit but one that is reflective of its time and place.

It's not bad, but it feels like it's missing something to really seem intentional.

On Audrey, it especially works cause her short hair and high contrast coloring. On Laurie, the rolled sleeves give structure. Maybe try that? Or maybe with your hair up?

When I've tried to wear multiple classic pieces together, it's just drab. I always end up adding at least one exotic, feminine, or "sharp" (like pointy toe boots) piece to make it look right.
ETA- I worked as a waiter (briefly- I was crap at it haha). We had the exact same uniform- black trousers and a tuxedo style shirt. Two men with pale skin and black hair looked great in it...classic and dead right. Me and the other low contrast folks- nope :/

Interesting. You're right that the shapes and cuts change slightly even if the components remain similar.

For my ‘current’ version of the Laurie look, I’d probably choose an oversized crisp shirt to go with your pants and flats. I have a harder time thinking what I’d choose to tweak it towards Audrey’s gamine version, because I am not that type, but probably something waist length and fitted like her twinset here. A rumply linen-type top like yours is part of a different classic outfit, in my mind. That said your outfit looks good too! Just some musings.

I actually really like the juxtaposition of the slightly rumpled linen and the polished ballet flats! I do like suntiger's idea to roll the cuffs of the shirt...seems like that would lend a bit more casual insouciance.

And I wish I could find jeans that fit me like that!

Love this! Laurie Petrie (and Mary Richards) were formative fashion influences I just realized. Interestingly I would be more inclined right now to wear her shoes than the round ballet flats . Your version is fab - I also love your shoes, and the linen shirt makes it very current to my eye.

Recently bought some myself- I think I am keeping. Tend to slip off the heel but not so bad with a half insole so will probably keep, as very pretty! Mine are twinkly navy, sort of sparkly a bit like my cobalt sparkly boots…
I remember Mary Tyler Moore but more from her eponymous show.

I love this look, and it definitely has the Laurie Petrie vibe! Very simple, but the texture of the linen shirt against the pretty ballet flats give it interest to me. Would love to see it with the sleeves rolled as well, as some of the others suggested.

Oh I especially like your pants and ballet flats. Love Audrey and Laura Petrie's inspo outfits. They definitely stand the test of time. I might try a version of this myself.

Great inspiration! I must remember to bring out my new black ballet flats in Early Fall. Dark denim and a floaty shirt will be good partners.

I like this look for you, but agree with the suggestion to roll or scrunch the sleeves.
