In my own home, I never wear shoes. I either go barefoot or in socks or in socks & slippers depending on the temps.
I was raised to take my shoes off at the front door, so whenever I go to other people's houses, that's my first instinct. But if they're a shoes indoors household, they look at my like I'm crazy, and then I leave my shoes on. I feel perfectly comfortable in stocking-ed feet anywhere but would only go barefoot at the houses of family or good friends.
When people visit me, I don't insist they took their shoes off (or even mention it...although I have a rug next to my door where a few of my own shoes lives, which probably gives them a hint), but I'm always relieved if they do. Saves some floor washing for me once they leave!
When I studied abroad in Russia, I lived with host families. It's very much a part of the culture there to never wear outdoor shoes inside, so they usually have a little collection of simple slippers (mule style, but not terrible substantial) for their guests near the front door & each member of the household has a pair of slippers that lives right inside the door as well.
