Ask Angie: the sizing of Gap sweater

Gap has 30% off until Sunday so I decided to pounce and try a sweater from Angie's post:

I am going to get both blue and cream and then see if I want to keep one or both. The question I have is about sizing. I am usually in between M and L and tend to go for L in sweaters unless I want a fitted look (which I usually don't). However I am not sure if this type of sweater is better more over sized and slouchy...Should I go for XL or do you think L should be enough?

I had the same dilemma -- I ended up just picking my normal size figuring that since it is described as boxy there is ease already built in. I could not decide between blue and cream but in the end chose cream as I already have blue and grey sweaters.

Angie went with her regular size. She said it is slouchier on her than on the model b/c she is shorter and has less broad shoulders. YMMV.

Hi Sveta, I posted on Angie's "Two Fab Finds" that I just purchased this sweater yesterday in XS in cream, when I saw your post here. I also asked about the color of the navy since one reviewer made a comment about the color that differed from what I was seeing online (I bought the ivory sweater in-store, but didn't see or know about the navy color at the time).

I generally wear XS and it is definitely long in the arms. It has a nice shape and Angie wisely says, "it is oversized in just the right way." I'll wait to see what Angie says here, but my thinking is that you may want to stay with the L as the XL may be too large for you. I'm contemplating the navy, too, but may go in the store to see it in person. You can't go wrong with navy and I'm so happy with this ivory/cream color as it's really pretty. But, of course, we have the best model in Angie to show us!

Vicki, do you think the petite would have fit you better in arm length? I am on the fence between xs in regular or s in petite...my arms are on the short side but my torso not so short.

Thanks, ladies, Suz, exactly, Angie said that models are taller and broader in the shoulder than her - and this is me, tall and broad in the shoulder
I am just not sure how it supposed to fit, how much oversized should it be. Maybe I should get 2 sizes and compare?
Ceit, how does your regular size fit?
I may pop into the store tomorrow to see if they have this sweater and try the size on before ordering. I would be definitely ordering online as I want Tall and they never have them in the store. Thanks God for Gap great online shopping policy!

I've tried them on in store and I would definitely say don't size up. I actually sized down and it was still a loose fit.

Sveta, I bought this sweater after trying it on in store. I am normally a size S and 4-6 pre-pregnancy. This sweater was really huge. I tried on the small and the neck was starting to droop and it was super baggy even with my pregnancy belly, and the M was even baggier and the arms too long. So I ended up sizing down to an XS.

I don't like oversized fit though--I hate droopy dolman armpits and the oversized look makes me feel even huger than I am. So if you like oversized fit, I would go with your normal size L and if you want a more fitted look, go with M. Definitely try on in store first if you can.

I looked at them in-store and I thought they were huge - even the XS was very boxy and big on me (I usually wear an XS at GAP.) The other thing about it is there are so many different shades of cream - and this one has a yellow undertone to it, so it's not going to look good on everyone (including me!) It was scary when I looked at myself in the mirror and the sales assosciate agreed - not. my. color!

Calling the store right now. Okay, here's the answer: The SA said there are no petites in the store, only online, and they will be about an inch shorter in the sleeves and overall garment length. I hope she's giving me accurate information as I pass it along to you!

As for the navy color, she said it's a "true navy" in her opinion. I asked her to put one on hold for me for tomorrow. Hope this helps everyone.

Sveta, mine is an XS and it fits "slouchier" both in the arms and torso than on the model (see photos below). I prefer the roomier look as you know, and wish the model had sized up! I would go for a size L. I hope it will be long enough. My client today, who is 6ft and wears a size 8/10, wore an L and it was less roomy than on me. But she liked it that way so it's all good

Sveta and Suz, here is the Gap size chart for comparisons. It seems the differences are more than one inch in some cases.

Angie, it means I may need to go to XL after all as I am 1 size up from you client (10/12): shoulders are too broad! I really like how yours fits. I am going to order Tall size and hope it will be long enough. You know Angie, you can really see how long and graceful your neck is in this funnel collar - it does not overpower you at all and we can still see you beautiful neck - unlike on the model...
Suz, why don't you order both sizes - regular and petite - to try on? Then return the one which does not work.
Marley, I think I suit yellowish cream better than greyish off white as I have warm coloring so hopefully it works for me.

Vicky, thanks a lot. Unfortunately my size on top comes more from my shoulders than from my chest so I can never say by those charts. If I go by this chest size I am size 8 in both Regular and Tall - but 8 never fits my shoulders!
But 2" difference on the sleeve length? Oh yes, I am going with the Tall!

...and, thanks, Sveta, for the 30% tip as it's also offered in the store, so when I try on the blue one, I'll be able to use it, unlike when I bought the ivory one. Keep us posted, Sveta and Suz.

Hm, I think I am also going to have to order a small to compare...I am always a M in Gap tops, but the measurements now on their chart for M are at least an inch to an inch and a half bigger than my measurements, and I am the same size I have been the last 5 years. I wonder if they've changed their sizing over the past while?

Ceit, Jamie just ordered a size S and M and I much preferred her in an M. She usually wears a size 6. I bet I wouldn't have thought the fit was too big on Marley at all! I suggested to Inge that she get an L. Roomy is the look.

Oops, I posted this on Natalie's thread by accident. I guess I've been off the forum for so long I'm out of practice. Anyway, FYI for others (not Sveta): I ordered the S P. I'll keep you posted. I hope I shouldn't have gotten the XS P. But often when the XS is the right size in regular, I need to size up in P.

Chiming in! I felt like the small fit me really nicely - big and roomy. However, with Angie's help, I understood better how this was supposed to look, and went with the medium. It's REALLY big, but I think I've finally wrapped my head around how this sweater is supposed to fit, which is not like the model wears it. Hope this helps! And thank you, Angie, for guiding me!

Update: just came from the mall. I tried on both L and XL and I think L works better for me - XL was too big. I did not buy it though as I want to order Tall size and it is going to be a tiny bit bigger than the Regular so it should work out for me. They did not have M in any color but I think it would be too snug for me for this style.
My only issue with this sweater is that funnel neck is a bit too wide in size L - it fits wider on me than on Angie. I am not sure if this would be a deal breaker for me, I guess I will wait and see...
I also tried on the navy one and I think I will pass. Somehow the color felt too flat. I think I will get this one instead:

I also got 2 sweaters as an impulse purchase there - green and yellow. Maybe a big mistake for all I know but I will take pictures and post them for you to judge!
Vicky, can you return your cream one and get a new one on sale or get a price adjustment? You just bought it...

Angie, do you really think I need a size S? If so I will go back and have another look. I had thought the XS would be plenty roomy on me once I lose the baby bump. I was worried the neck was too loose and wide on me in the S but maybe I should go back and take some pics in both sizes.

From everything that people are saying here about the necks, I am wondering if this is one of those typical Gap things where the cut of each garment may vary a little bit, with some being better than others. Because Angie hardly has a wide neck and the neckline on hers does not seem wide at all. OTOH, she is wearing the XS so perhaps the necks are made wider in proportion to the sweater, even though people's necks probably don't differ all THAT much compared to their shoulders or bust.

I ordered the grey in xs petite and regular...I hope it won't be too small. If it is supposed to fit really big, maybe it will be. I might be able to try it IRL in regular tomorrow.

Sveta, can't wait to see your purchases, especially the PANTS!!! I didn't get to Sears but half wish I had made it there....
