Ask Angie: Red Shoes Quandary

Hi Angie,
This is my first time to ask a question. I enjoy and read your blog daily. I am curious as to what color belt you suggest I wear with a pair of red Gucci mules. I am much like you ~ I tend to always match shoes and belt. But, the red shoes are tricky, and I always wear a belt with my jeans. I appreciate your suggestions. Thank you!

I'm not Angie, but I have one possible solution. When in doubt, go with a metallic! Which metallic would depend on the rest of the outfit, and whether the red shade was cooler or warmer, the metals of any jewelry you wear, the hardware on the shoes, etc.

Beautiful. You can build a complement with scarf and bag that incorporates the same red.

Or as Christina suggests, wear a belt in the metallic of the hardware of the shoe.

I also like black belts with jeans if that works with your coloring and outfit , and it picks up the heel color. Also depends on the denim wash. If the outfit is summery , casual and jeans are light/ faded / distressed, you could even wear a “ natural “ color or material like jute or braided leather , even though the mules are polished.

I'm glad you started this thread. I just bought a pair of red shoes and was wondering whether I should try to coordinate them with my outfit somehow. I found a couple of red belts at Nordstrom, but the red was too dark for my shoes. I will look for some other accessory instead. I suppose another idea would be a watch with a red leather strap. Or if you wear statement earrings, you could find some with red tassels.

One other option would be to wear a statement red lip. The makeup will tie the loafers in with your overall look.

Another idea is simply to balance it with another bright in the outfit -- doesn't have to be red, necessarily.

When wearing coloured shoes, I like to match them to, not a belt, but an item on my upper body or near my face. Tomorrow, I will wear red suede ballet pumps with: red glasses, wine blouse with white polkadots, charcoal skirt, light grey maxi cardigan, and silver belt.

Seconding UmmLila: with a warm red like this, leopard is great. Try a skinny hair-calf belt in leopard print with a gold buckle.
