Ask Angie: question about Uggs!

Since getting my Blackstones a few years back, I have been totally converted to shearling-lined shoes for winter. I would like a pair of pull-on boots that are completely shearling-lined. Some of the Uggs styles I like (the ones that tend to look more sneaker-y) I can see from photos on Nordstrom & Zappos don't have a lined footbed—only the uppers. Is this true for all Uggs? I thought Uggs lined the whole inside with shearling. Any insight is welcome! Thank you in advance!

Not Angie of course, but wanted to say that I got the below a few years ago. They have shearling-lining all round, and a removable shearling footbed that is cosy and warm (I had to remove it to add my custom orthotics but even without they are plenty warm).

Not sure which other models do or don't have the lined footbed though.

Thank you Inge! There should be a category "Ask Everybody" because that's what I would have chosen! Your boots are beautiful. I feel like Uggs made way chic-er things a few years ago! These days all they have is the classic mukluk style (not totally my bag) and the sneaker style (better, but still not as cool as yours). Part of me wonders if I should hold out and hope that some chic ones come around next winter. I do still have the Blackstones and some insulated Vans to carry me through this winter. I just hate to be a cliche, but I have arrived at the point in my life where pull-on is a big sell for me...otherwise I have to deal with zippers or laces, what a bother!

Lesley, I'm not sure if the footbeds are lined in Ugg styles, but if the soles are thick and the rest of the boot is lined - you should be plenty warm

You can get shearling or other cozy insoles to use with shoes that are lined everywhere else. They are very readily available here in Berlin this time of year, but I think I’ve seen them in the US too.
I’m with you on the pull-ons!

PS I just got an email from Vagabond about their warm lined boots. Not sure if it’s shearling—it just says “warm”, but you might want to take a look. Sorels have more of an Ugg-ish look and are often lined.

In the US and much of the world, ugg is a trademark not a description of a specific type of footwear.

In Australia, an ugg boot is always a sheepskin boot and an Australian icon. Because I live in Australia, I buy and wear locally made sheep skin boots and the companies selling them solely within Australia are allowed to call them ugg boots. My Australian made boots are wonderful.

The trademark for the word ugg was registered in the US and 130 countries by a US company and now Australian companies calling their boots ugg boots for product sold outside of Australia are being sued for trademark infringement, which has been upheld by US Courts. The action is yet to be determined within the US Supreme Court:

Lesley, if you want a sheep skin boot, it would be best to search for that specific description as Australian companies producing what was formerly called ugg boots don't want to be sued for selling them to you. I have bought this brand and highly recommend their product:

Bijou, how bizarre that US courts get to decide that. I’ve never heard of that issue before—seems parallel to the word “moccasins” being copyrighted in Europe.

I have read about the copyright issue, one of those cases I think where a trade name crosses over into generic usage and then the company ( owner of the trade name) gets sold, in this case into US rather than Australian interests, for an originally Australian product. I remember my first pair of sheepskin boots about age 16 in the late 70s, which I am sure we called Ugg boots although not the official brand.

Just chiming in to thank YLF and last year’s thread about fleece lined boots being so much better for winter warmth! It convinced me to give a fleece lined pair a try, and after raving about them regularly, DH followed suit. Now we are much more comfortable on our cold weather walks.

FWIW, I bought a pair of alpaca foot beds from a local alpaca farm, and they are amazing! I use them in unlined boots and booties, and they do make a difference. So, thumbs up to using alpaca or sharing footbeds if your boots come unlined.
