Ask Angie et All: Images of your storage (closet/drawers).

I am evaluating the size of my wardrobe and storage space. I remembered a post where you mention sharing a walk-in closet with Greg. I might not have this exactly right. I could use some inspiration in this area.

Do you have a post that has a collection of images that shows your storage systems? Closet, drawers, shoe/bag storage, sweater storage, etc.

Here's a couple of mine, though it's a work in progress at the moment as I need shelf dividers for the upper shelves in my closet and I'm trying to find a new home for storing my bigger coats. The second photo shows a drawer under my bed and I have used empty shoe boxes as a means of segregating workout clothes and scarves, which works a treat. My underwear drawer shows a shoe box again for my rolled up knickers and my bras. Also a drawer showing folded cami's and nightwear.

I just did a major reorganization in my closet. It came about because I was putting capsules and outfits together. I ended up dividing by colors- one section contains the capsules with black, white, gray and citron. The other section includes the blues, berries and navy groupings. I even separated my shoe racks which used to be stacked and divided my shoes by color. I also included the bags and scarves I will use with each color group.

I think I love it because it feels like two little boutiques!

I then have the casual stuff (shorts, tees, sweatshirts) together. My out of season clothes are in a guest room closet. My dresser hold undies, socks, pajamas and bathing suits.

Diane, I love that you used shoe boxes, saving money on buying the store bought organizers, which I myself just bought for undies, socks and bras.

Eeek! I don't think there's enough space in my closet to stand back and take a photo. I'm nowhere near as organised as Diane and Susie. Diane, I love that you can see at a glance what's in your cami and bra drawers and boxes. I have an older home with limited closet space, so I do a lot of off-season storage of spring and summer items in our guest closet. I tend to store a lot of winter stuff at my dry cleaners -- they cold store it for free after cleaning and I pick it up next season. I think it's better for my clothes given the heat and humidity here.

1. the main part of the closet before I switched over to Spring/Summer a week or two ago.

Diane G: Great job. You really have maximized space. Love your organization through boxes. You also have me thinking about step stool and I'm considering how your shoes stair step up to capture space underneath all your hanging clothes. Thanks!

Susie: Very nice. You're also making me think more about shoe storage underneath hanging. And hanger selection. And organization...your system, etc. Again, very nice.

TraceyLiz65/Frannie: I agree. These ladies are doing some fabulous organizing and maximizing space.

Aliona: We live in an older home and have limited space. I definitely do the seasonal storage but never thought to store at dry cleaners. Very interesting. Thank you. Good food for thought.

Angie: I found one picture where each hanger has a place. Is that your current system?

Carole: Very nice. Lots to think about. I'm a bit of a minimalist when it comes to jewelry/belts but I still feel I need some work in this area. Many things for your storage/display ingenuity.

Deb: You closet makes me jealous of shelves. This is what I am missing desperately. I have some "hanging" cubby holes but they bug me. Sweaters get squeezed into them and get wrinkled. I think this might be my biggest challenge. Bags, sweaters, shoes. And the lack of shelves.

Carter: I'm so jealous of your gorgeous shelves of sweaters.. and your entire closet. You've got so much room. And looks so beautiful organized. Our 1920's cottage is really lacking in storage but we have a renovation planned that will give me more storage but nothing to write home about. Where are you shoes? And are your scarves on the back of that door? And you have an amazing collection of jewelry. I'm pretty minimal on jewelry...thank god. I'd have no where to put those lovelies. And where are your t-shirts?

Some terrible nighttime pics to answer your questions.

1. The Spring/Summer stuff moved around to the working side. Short sleeve tees are still on the other side, but given the temps in the 70s this week, they may move over very soon. Long sleeve tees are on the top sweater shelf, right corner.

2.-3. Scarves were hanging on the belt rack, but they transitioned to the drawers in the seasonal shift. The other drawers hold bras, tanks/camis, socks, jammies, bathing suits, etc

4. The shoe cabinet is at the end of the row of pants. It's a bit overstuffed at the moment because I haven't yet purged the shoes that likely won't work for my foot anymore.

The other side of the closet, that's impossible to photograph, holds out of season stuff, plus dresses, dressy work clothes (not the everyday work stuff) and my make-up counter.

Carter: Thanks for these pictures. I just cleaned out a small guest closet that has two hanging bars. I'm trying to figure out how to split my storage needs into two closets. And get my head around sweater/t-shirts, shoes, scarves, belts. This is really helping me to process. And I am making lousy use of my dresser. Need to dedicate some time to this. But at least a lot of the purging is complete! I'm tempted to have all my work from home/lounge/apres swim clothes in one closet and save the larger (very small walk-in) for fun outfits. Ugh. Lots to think about.
