Ask Angie and YLF: lovely tweed jacket with weird fit?

Buying blazers is making me nuts. I feel like the Princess and the Pea: too long, too short, too oddly proportioned, too...(fill in the blank). So I'm calling on the collective YLF wisdom to educate me on proper blazer fitting.

To start, I've fallen in love with this Boden jacket. It's beautifully made with the cutest lining and...well, all the tweedy goodness is calling my name. However, yet again, the fit's not right, but I can't quite figure out why. What am I missing? I've considered:

1. The waist is too high (which should theoretically work as I'm short waisted)?
2. The stance is too high. Maybe it would look better if it was made to button lower?
3. The overall jacket is just too short
or
4. Looking at the photos, the shoulders seem slightly too small. Maybe I need to size up?

I can't tell. It doesn't quite feel right on and I don't think it looks quite right either (I do think it looks better in pics than IRL).

I think it looks great and love the whole outfit. Maybe it would be worth trying the next size up to see how it feels in comparison.

I'd try one size up. It's very cute, and I think it might be just a smidge small all around.

It looks like a beautiful fit but does seem a bit short with the jeans. It would probably look super with a skirt, but maybe that's not what you need. I love the proportions on some of the Smythe blazers ( but not the price!) Have you checked them out?

i actually think it fits you really well and as it should. To me the issue (if there IS one) is that the whole shape of the jacket (NOT YOU!) is softly rounded. It's somewhere between tailored and not tailored. I often have this problem with Boden, which is why I no longer try anything there.

I think it's a 10, Ms. Preppy Delight of Fabness. It's shrunken. The welt pockets are in the right place. My thumbs are up!

Hmm. I do like the rounded-ness of it and the fact there are no sharp edges anywhere. It's cut shorter in front than in back and gives a great line when viewed from the side. But then again, that style also emphasizes *my* roundedness, too. When I grow up, I want to be angular and mod! Anna, I wondered about the girls, too.

Angie, I do see what you mean about the pockets and hadn't considered that. Hm. I think I might try the next size up juuuust for comparison's sake.

I think the fit is good, but I like fitted clothes to show off my waist. Try a size up, I don't think you need it but go for it if you'd feel more comfortable!

It is gorgeous and looks like it fits perfectly, but the the way the plaid lines up in the front where the darts and seams are created a very rounded effect somehow. Weird. I don't think *you* are round though, it's more of an optical illusion! Trying a size up can't hurt.

Yeah! I love it when I get the same answer as Angie! I like it. I looked at it and immediately thought, oh, it's a shrunken equestrian jacket. It looked great to me.... then scrolled down and saw Angie said it's a 10. I think so too! If it feels a little uncomfortable, then do try sizing up just a bit. However, it looks great to me as is. I like a really fitted jacket.

I really like it, but only unbuttoned in 3 and from the back. I don't know that you want to wear it buttoned up but if you do please try the size up. It looks like a nice jacket and I'm adjusting to the shrunken look as well. I have bits that will be hanging out below the shrunken part, you do not so enjoy.

Overall, I think this jacket looks really sharp on you. [The outfit looks great too!]

However, I'm with those who think the pattern over the bust is creating an extra-rounded effect, and I do think the armholes might be cut a bit low, which contributes to that bosom area thing.

I grapple with the same issue, and find high armholes REALLY streamline the upper torso. I have jackets where I've narrowed the sleeves, had the waist and/or upper body nipped in and still...just a bit more off than I'd like.

If you have a full sweater under the jacket in the photo, you might want to get the arms narrowed a bit. It does help, and the jacket seems very "you!"

I really liked it on you - the only thing that seemed off to me was how much the front curves up at the center. I feel it shouldn't curve up high enough to see your shirt.

Otherwise, I didn't see any issue with the fit, so I'm glad that Angie agrees.

If you don't mind a copycat, I may have try this out myself (short waisted, short torsoed etc).

Wow, great thoughts from everybody. Thanks! I waited to reply until the next size up arrived to weigh back in again.

The next size up, an 8, was definitely too big (Preppy Pear and Sylvie, the jacket is TTS...I usually wear a 4 or 6 in Boden), so I tried the 6 again with several different tops and then modeled for DH. He loved it, so I'm keeping it. I'll always wear it open, so that deemphasizes the rounded look a little, I think.

It's 100% me for sure. Not a piece to stretch my fashion horizons very far, but certainly a jacket I'll enjoy wearing in my Preppy Fab way (LOL, Angie)

And can I share what a sucker I am for a cute lining? It has Beefeaters! And Big Ben! And Parliament!
