Ask Angie and others: my turn at the Columnists

OK, these pictures are going to self-destruct in about 24 hours. Good heavens. NOT my best ; )

Anyway, I wanted to get a sense of how you think these pants fit, hence the great white underbelly exposure. I tried the Columnist last year in petite and they were a complete disaster. These are regular, and I think they fit much better in the rearend and thighs. OBVIOUSLY, they need shortening by about a mile and I probably would narrow them to straights so I can wear them with all my shoes.

1/2/3 - the Ultimate Double Weave Tab Waist in Red Fox - what do you think of the color?

4/5 - the Studio Stretch in Black. I also ordered the double weave in black, but I slightly prefer the heavier wt of the studio stretch - has anyone compared how they launder?

Your photos look fine Sarah.. Im on my screen at work which is not the best but I am not keen on the first pair, from the front the fit looks off. I like the second pair better. The fabric does seem more substantial and sits better.

Oh dear...I have such trouble judging pants when they're not shortened. I usually try to pin to a nominal or "almost right" place just so I can really see the line of the things. It doesn't always work but sometimes helps.

I think these could both work, as a matter of fact. Are the red ones a bit shiny or is that just a trick of the flash? I can see that being a fun colour to add in to the wardrobe for you, for sure.

Will the alterations bring them so far up in price that they become too expensive for what they are, if you know what I mean?

Thanks for you opinions. The red ones are not shiny at all, Suz, that's just the flash. I wish I could photograph in natural light, but by the time the kids are in bed...

The alterations will be, ahem, "free" insomuch as my time isn't worth anything ; ). I'll do the alteration myself, as I did with my Halogen pants from NAS.

I prefer the black ones, as the red ones have too much wrinkling/buckling going on under the seat -- they may just be too wide in the leg for you. The black ones fit very well.

Thanks for your honest opinion, DJ - I've learned that with my flat rear, I often get some buckling when I stand perfectly straight - it is often not as bad when I'm in motion, but I'll make sure. I think a "perky bottom" pulls up the extra material, as this is a problem I often have with pants.

I like both fits actually, Sarah! The red is a little roomier and more tomboyish. The black is more feminine.

I like them both. The second ones definitely hang straighter, but I can believe that the buckling in the red ones is not an issue in motion/real life. These look like winners to me.

Angie - interesting observation. I already have BR Martins, so maybe I'll keep the Double Weaves in black instead. OR, get the teal ones : )

Just wondering, and not meant to sidetrack you or anything: I know the Editors are a straighter cut, vs. the Columnists that are cut for a curvy bottom half. Did you try the Editors and they didn't work out, or just like the fabrications/colors of the Columnists better? I have two pair of the Editors and I think we are both on Team Flat Rear, so I thought I would throw that out there :).

Great color with the first pair. How interesting that the regular length fit so different. I'm always trying the short in Express and they never work on me. I'll have to try the regular next time and see if that helps.

I think both pair of pants fit well - each in their own vibe like Angie said.

I like the roomy fit of the red ones, plus I like that color -- IF you have enough already to wear them with.

If you have black Martins and they're still in good shape, are these another black pant silhouette then?

Jonesy -- I thought Editors were for us curvy bottoms, and the Columnists were for the straighter bottoms. . . ?? I just had a thread for K/R and Editors were the keepers.

Okay, obviously I have lost my marbles at the beginning of this semester :)! In fact I have two pairs of the *Columnists* and I just reversed the fit types. I think my trouble was I looked on the website and they described the Editors as having a "straight fit," and I had forgotten what exactly I bought last spring! Ignore me and carry on :).

I love the fit of the black pair on you! The red is a little roomier but still looks good. The color is great. I have the studio stretch and they launder just fine. I just ordered a pair of maroon Editors and some camel and brown pants to replace some I just purged. Keeping my fingers crossed they look as good on me.
