Ask Angie & All: Navy, Peach and Brown - With This Blouse?

Dear Angie and all,

I loved last week's ensemble, but I have nothing that resembles peach. This week a silk blouse turned up that appealed to me, even though it is very different from most of my other clothes. It is thrifted.

The color is soft peach/blush or champagne, and the fabric is thin, 100% silk with wonderful drape and sheen. Not too transparent, and with a lot of details. I really like how it looks under a topper. It's the sleeves that gives me pause because of the volume. Do they look dated? I'm considering having them removed if I don't make peace with them. The blouse is tailored and looks good untucked as well as tucked.

Can I pull this off? Thank you in advance for any and all comments and suggestions!

(Also, on a side, note, it looks as if the slim trousers have eased up just the right amount.)

I think the blouse is beautiful and romantic. It is a little softer and more feminine than your typical shirts, but I think it's a lovely change and it's more "vintage" looking than dated to my eye. Did you try it with other items as well?

Thank you, Suz! I've been wearing various versions of coral, salmon red, peach and so forth in the past, and this one is almost blush. The color and fabric is really appealing to me. I also liked the structured collar and the tux-like chest piece a lot, I wouldn't have bought it if it had looked more like a pirate shirt with ruffles down the front.

I haven't tried it with much else yet, but I have several quite simple bottoms to pair it with. I think it could look very interesting as part of today's ensemble, too, with white jeans. Agree?

Wow! Please don't remove those sleeves. I think they bring out a poet look that you pull off nicely. The color combination looks lovely with your brown hair, so to sum up ...

The navy/peach/brown combo looks great together, especially sans blazer to give the other colors more visual "time." Not entirely sure about the sleeves for you - I'll see what the others say. And yes, it's a great color on you.

I like the blouse under the jacket and worn without. I think the sleeves give the blouse a unique romantic look. Too me they are too different looking to look dated, but I'm not the best at dated vs. not dated, so hopefully others will have stronger opinions.

Wow. This is stunning. Every bit of it!

ETA -- as for the sleeves, I kind of like them. The blouse adds a soft romantic aspect to the otherwise strict pants suit. The arms look a bit long though. I'd live with it for a while and as you said, you can chop off the sleeves later (to short or sleeveless length).

Denise, thanks! I am beginning to think that it in fact is poor fit that bothers me more than the actual volume. A little shorter, and I will probably not feel that it's wearing me any more.

Oh that blouse is gorgeous! Look at all of those details. And the colour combo flatters you beautifully.

The sleeves don't look dated to me, because the shoulder is so neat and tidy, but they're more romantic and vintage than we usually see you in. Ultimately, if you find the sleeves aren't quite you, you could just always wear a blazer over top if blazers are a big part of your style. But I suspect the sleekness and modernity of the rest of your pieces will balance the sleeves in outfits.

The color is really good on you.
I think the sleeves can be okay, with the other parts of outfit being updated.
I echo that the sleeve length is perhaps too long as is not true poet style.
For sleeves that are just a bit too long, I sometimes move the button so they don't fall over my hand. Not sure that would work with these because there may stil be bunching. Would you ever do a casual turned-back cuff to the wrist?
I think it's such a pretty color and fabric that you could keep working with it a bit and see what you think. Ultimately you're trying to see if it will be an outfit-maker--sometimes just the right color will do that-- or a closet-breaker.

With the jacket, I saw tux styling which seems very current, actually. Without the jacket the sleeves gave me pause. But I think I agree that if shortened, they could work. It's really a stunning, one of a kind piece. I need to come thrift Norway

I love the color and the details of this blouse. It fits you well, but I agree there may be an issue with the sleeves. To me, they simply look too long. Rather than removing them, could you have them shortened? I like them long, but just not that long.

Another idea might be to try the blouse with the top one or two buttons unbuttoned. You might even try popping the collar and possibly adding a short necklace such as a string of pearls.

Whatever you do, the blouse looks lovely on you.

I will play around with it a bit more, and look into shortening of the sleeves. I guess that would make a difference.

The blouse does suit you, Ingunn... and I do think shortening the sleeves is the answer -- you'll get more versatility out of it, I think by taking them up a bit. That would still reference a more romantic, poetic look -- without being too literal AND while staying true to your style. Or, as Unfrumped suggests, turn back the cuffs. Try the blouse on with a skirt and please share a photo! Gorgeous top!

Tonight I've tried the blouse with white jeans - check, dark blue jeans - check, black pencil skirt - not so good, too much secretary look for me. I have two black ones, and the shorter one worked best. I also found that my denim jacket is great as a topper, and I also have a grey tweed blazer that can work. In general, I prefer pairing this one with very simple pieces, to avoid too much of a good thing. I think I easily could create four-five outfits for work and going out with friends with this, and it can transition from winter to spring effortlessly. Now I only hope Angie agrees

Great outfit, and I love the blouse on you. The color and style are gorgeous on you. I don't find it dated. I think the way it is fitted suits you, because it looks romantic yet tailored; only the sleeves are billowy, and just at the bottom. If you do anything with the sleeves, I would vote for shortening them at the cuff to maintain the integrity of the upper sleeve style.

Liz - I've been thinking about the pant length. I've hemmed these for flat shoes because thats what I wear most of the time, so I guess you are right. I was hoping to get away with it because the legs are quite narrow:)
