Argh! What do I do? (Post-premiere update) :)

I did something a bit stupid: I got my hair cut into a new style three days before I really need it to look good, and of course it didn't turn out how I imagined it. Aaaaargh. And it's really short. Any shorter would be a pixie cut, which I don't want. I'm supposed to go to the Star Wars premiere in Hollywood on Monday, which I'm very excited about, and now I'm going to look like Maria from The Sound of Music (only nowhere near as pretty).

Can I wear a beanie with my dress? (I'm only half joking). What would YOU do?

I would do fab makeup and a fab outfit and just brazen it out.

Is slicking it back/down with gel an option?

i'd make sure that my outfit and makeup is perfect, and have a great time at the premiere....after all, this is the biggest movie event of the year...
if you have time, i'd try to get a professional blow dry before the event, but wouldn't sweat it if you don't have time,

*Sigh* you're both right. It's just so hard to feel fab when your hair is bad. Serves me right for taking in a picture and and asking her to "make it look like that". I know from experience that that sort of thing never ends well. I think I imagine that the haircut will somehow magically also give me the woman's face.

Mary, slicking it back would be worse. It's not terrible, it's just shorter than I thought and not as flattering as I would like. The only way it looks cute is poking out from under a beanie, which of course I can't wear on the red carpet!

Can you show us the haircut pic? I make that mistake too - I usually pick cuts that are for fine blonde hair on little elfin faces.

Una, you are a doll. I do not feel particularly adorable today, however. This haircut might look better in two months, when it has grown out, but right now it's too short and it makes my jaw look heavier. I also don't have the large eyes needed for a short haircut. (It's reassuring to know other people make this mistake!).

I have tickets because my hubs worked on it. They've sent him down a few times for other movies, but for this one he was allowed a plus-one, so I'm going too! And we'll get to see some old friends from SF who are also bringing their partners.

Aziraphale and Una you both made me LOL!!! I am a fine, very very thin haired blonde and have usually pick cuts for wavy brunettes and probably expected the haircut will somehow magically also give me the thickness and bounce, too- then wondering what was I thinking?:-)
I need 2 weeks to each of my haircuts to settle in(regular ones, too:-()...but damn, I always forget, it before the most important event!.
My only advice is, SMILE and feel fab, as you really are-nobody knows and care about your hair issues, anyway:-)

Would mussing/spiking with gel work or is it too long?

Diana, a fascinator is a cool idea, except that (a) I don't have one (and no time to shop now), and (b) it would actually be way too dressy for my crowd. When I say "the red carpet", it's not me who's going to be wearing a ball gown. Most of the guys will wear a suit but no tie, or else a dressy jeans and a blazer, with fancy shoes. These are visual effects guys, after all. It's a casual industry. I haven't even decided if I'm going to wear a dress or a pencil skirt. I've got lots of dressy shoes.

Or something Gatsby-inspired? (These are wedding hairstyles but you get the point... or just search pinterest for "gatsby hairstyle").

What I was thinking of was Carey Mulligan's hair in the movie. But maybe hers is too short?

When I get stuck with hair in the not-quite-pixie / not-quite-bob territory (which is often because my hair grows annoying-fast) I do one of two things:

1. spike and tousle.
2. cute headband. it is the holidays after all. bring da sparkle!

Either one draws the eye up and away from the jawline.

Also, killer eye makeup.

Ahhh, no suggestions since it has been many many years since I had my hair short (and stories like yours are what part of what keeps me from going short!), but I'm sorry you're having this dilemma! It's so hard to feel fab when you don't like your hair.

Somehow I am sure it is not as bad as you think - we are usually the worst self critics and adjustment to a change is always hard.

So how about a really good eye makeup , maybe cat eye to make the eyes look bigger? Maybe it makes sense to have it done professionally (if like I am you are not very skilled on eye makeup) because it may be just the missing piece here to make you feel fab.

If it makes you feel better, I always get better cuts with a pic. This last time I didn't take one, and ended up with a long, poufy Rachel cut. Le sigh.

I like the idea of a headband. The right product can give a cut like you describe some texture. That would rid you of the problem of Maria.

Can you buy a glamorous beanie to wear? My Mum was unfortunately required to have her head shaved for surgery and we got a few beanies for her to wear for all occasions and she always looked great. I hope you enjoy the movie and do sympathise, bad haircuts happen to us all.

Go to Sephora or any MAC, buy fake eyelashes & have them apply them with eye makeup. I actually like Sephora ones better now.
False eyelashes will make your eyes look bigger.

In addition to all the good ideas you've gotten here, I would add: I always find a new haircut will relax after a couple of days into something that feels more like my own hair again. Here's hoping it looks and feels better to you, just in time for the event!

It sounds like you kind of ended up with an I between cut/style. I absolutely empathise with you. It also sounds like you feel you can wear short hair?? If it were me I would probably go back and even tho it's shorter than I planned I would have it trimmed into a better looking cut so that it looked, and I felt, it was intentional. Great makeup and grooming should make you feel more positive :). And I bet it's not as bad as you think xx

Headwear is your friend. If you don't have time to shop, there's loads of nice ways with a silk scarf. If you go for a hat, make sure it's not so big as to block the view of the folk behind you.

So sorry you hate your 'do and so amazed you're going to the premiere! Have a wonderful time.

You have a beautiful face and fabulous eyes. Wear some dramatic eye makeup and big earrings and an attitude of I am SO FAB and you WILL be. I always second/third the idea of a headband. Just a wide band of lace or grosgrain ribbon will do.

Sending sympathy: I'm always faffing about with new styles and I've been in your shoes so many times. I've also had gushing compliments on cuts I positively hate and none--or negative feedback--on cuts I think look fab, proof that hair, like fashion, is a personal preference.

I echo Firecracker's comment: my hair does settle after a couple of days. It seems to initially hold onto the old style and needs to relax/be coaxed into the new one. My stylist actually encourages me to come back a couple of days later for a tweak. He cuts it dry to work with the natural fall and cowlicks.

Hope you find something that works and have so much fun at your premiere that you forget about your hair
