Are these frumpy? (Dansko smoking slippers)

So I've become slightly obsessed with the idea of getting smoking slipper style shoes. (I say "smoking slipper style" because I'm pretty sure the true, flat ones would never work for my foot issues.) I'm aware this may be a futile quest since they may never stay put on my narrow heels and insteps.

But, anyway, apparently Dansko makes some! I can't tell from the photo/video whether the vamp is high enough for them to potentially stay on my feet.

But are they frumpy? I would want the bronze snake, not the black that is showing up below.

Oh my gawrsh! Those really ARE fab! I don't know anything about Dansko's except a fussy friend says they are comfy enough for her. She calls Easy Spirits "Evil Spirits" because she once wore them to NYC and had hurt feet afterward.

The bronze snake pattern made me gasp with excitement.

Errrr, I kinda think they are a bit industrial. And maybe a wee bit so etching my great aunt would wear. Okay, yes, I will say it. Frumpy.

I think they are cool. The bronze snake patterns doesn't look frumpy to me--plus I can see you wearing them in your arty, cool way. I have narrow heels too and have never had problems with Danskos--just by watching the video, I'm guessing that I wouldn't have a problem with these either. I say try them out!

I love smoking slippers but these ones read too "sensible' to me (great term, Anna!) I think the toe is too round and upturned in addition and the sole is too "comfort shoe" looking. Snake pattern is fab though...

Super frumpy in the black, but the bronze snake...? I'd have to see them on, but those have some potential. Sorry, I know that is no help.

The shape, especially in black, reads as more loafer and, like Anna mentioned, very, very sensible. However, the bronze snake somehow give me an entirely different vibe - maybe even smoking slipper instead of loafer. From the picture posted in black, I would have been an automatic no, but I would give the snake print ones a chance.

They aren't beautiful, but as a fellow severe sufferer I've seen much worse. Of course they are sensible, that's the point. If you can wear them in comfort and can't wear other less sensible shoes, then they are pretty decent. Being able to walk is quite beautiful.

Hmm, lots of differing opinions. I do agree that they are not quite true smoking slippers, but I'm honestly not sure that, with my foot limitations, I'll ever be able to find one of those that fits me. For one thing, the super thin slipper sole is just not doable for me. If I want to do this trend at all, I will have to make some concessions to comfort. I guess the question is: do I try to do it with sensible shoes, or do I just pass altogether?

I agree that the black is a definite NO. I actually really dislike the black leather Dansko uses (although all their other colors are fine) - it always looks very thick, waxy, and dull, which just adds to the frump factor.

Will have to think about this some more. Keep the opinions coming, please! And any other suggestions for similar shoes too. I must have a bit of heel and at least a moderate height vamp.

Boy, I have a lot of the same problems with getting a stable comfortable shoe and achieving certain stylings with outfits. I think these are a chunky loafer style and would need to think of how those work rather than expecting to get the slipper flat look. I'm sure you've tried a lot of different ways to contain your feet-- so I'm wondering if you have more success with a strap shoe or the lace ups like your oxfords?
Which of the styles and shapes of shoes you can wear come closest to modern or tending styles and still fit your own style?

I also think they are frumpy. They remind me of the old shoes that the Russians spies (the not attractive SMERSH ones) from From Russia with Love, which I'm sure is not a look you are going for.

My eye is used to Danskos and of course, I wear them too, so I think they're cute in that pug kind of way, but they are not a substitute for smoking slippers in my mind.

I think they're frumpy in the black for certain. But that snake print is pretty cool. I don't think they look at all like a smoking slipper, though, either way. So even if they could be made to look cool, they wouldn't look like that.

I share your frustration, by the way. I would also really love a pair of smoking flats. But...as per usual, they will not stay on my feet. Tried a pair at NAS. (The ones Sveta bought, which I loved on her.) "Try them," says she. "How could they not stay on your feet with that high vamp?"

Ha! My foot showed her all right. At first she thought maybe the one I had on was too big. No; my toe was very near the end. Flip flop, flip flop, out slipped the heel with my very first step. And I knew I'd be in agonies of discomfort within half an hour.

Grrrrr.

Unfrumped, pretty much the only non-sandal, non-boot shoes I have right now are oxfords (4 pairs) and sneakers. So all lace-up styles. I guess I'm craving some variety; also, I feel like something like today's outfit would have been better with just a touch more foot showing. I'm not sure any loafers/slippers would stay on anyway, so this may end up just being a hypothetical exercise.

I did search for ankle-strap loafers and ankle-strap slipper flats but they pretty much don't exist or are extremely frumpy.

I'm not interested at all in ballet flats and mary janes. My style has moved well beyond those.

Or I could just give up and go on happily buying boots. =P

ETA: I guess I also have my Dansko Noris, but I feel like those are more of a very low bootie in terms of styling rather than a shoe.

OK, you are all right that I should not think of them as a smoking slipper substitute, but do you think they work in something like the Anthro BF/blazer outfit? I did feel like my oxfords were just a little bit too high-vamped for my BF outfit today.

But, yeah, something in that style would be perfect.

Una, the ones you linked are beautiful too (I really like the gold!), but they all have the super thin front sole. I'm kind of leery of shoes that I can feel the ground through these days.

Diana, I just don't see you wearing these. I am gong to vote 'frumpy', I am sorry. As far as smoking slippers go (and as per the links others have included) there are a lot of other more attractive options out there.

I think you should give them a try! I have a hard time imagining "bronze snake" could manage to be frumpy!

If you can wear a heeled loafer like the SM's , I've seen others at lower price points. Not as cool, but cooler than the Dansko's .

A heeled loafer is generally better for my feet than a truly flat one, so long as the heel is under 2.5". But it's still dicey whether or not they will stay on my heels.

I was looking for a similar shoe, but with my fussy feet sadly, it was pretty limited. I did get these loafers in leopard calf hair. not the cute pointy toe slipper flat I wanted, have yet to wear them with an arch support insert though

Diana, I like your outfit with the oxfords. I don't think these Danskos would improve anything, and I'm in the camp that finds them somewhat too clog-like to give the cool edge I think you're after. You could trying rolling your jeans a little longer or a little shorter, and I think that would do the trick--it would either show a little more ankle or none. That said, I still like the outfit as you wore it! Sassy chic.
