definitely wore the kilts in the '80s, catholic school girl uniform. i still itch when i think about kilts. which is too bad because those posted on the vogue site are so fab.

can't/shouldn't wear shorts /tights/boots combo.
definitely not cap sleeves. i've inherited the family arms (as in upper, not coat-of).
skinny cargos with thigh emphasis. would love to, but shouldn't.
maxi dresses...really really disappointed by this.

Shana -- LOL at your string of items. I'm sure this doesn't apply to you, but I recently read in the New Yorker an account of a fancy society party at which an older woman was saying to someone, "Honey -- anymore, I don't even do sleeveless in the shower."

In looking over the trends, the one I'm loving but not sure I could pull off is the cape. Not sure a 50-something can get away with this- guess it depends on the cape and and the outfit!

Does anyone else like these or am I alone here in my 70's flashback?

hmm no one single look, but basically anything that looks super fab on an inverted triangle or rectangle LOL!

I often love the look of things that don't work with hips basically!

A lot of trends seem to favor me lately: shoulder details and emphasis, pants and jeans that add volume or curve to the bottom half especially.

I can't wear my favorite necklines because of my bust though. That's less of a trend and more of an ongoing struggle.

I certainly can't wear the colors that are trending now, but I don't want to so I guess they don't count.

Ele, do you mean to tell me that the Beckham/Pitt love child was on my home soil and I *didn't* get to meet him? *sob!*
Before we all pine away, let's just hope that no Posh Spice genes made it into the mix.

Um, right, trends.

Clams with tall boots. I just don't think I can pull this off, though it sounds fun.

Frye boots: Oh how I'd love to find a great pair and buy them, since they'd be a great investment in my climate, but I highly doubt I'll ever find a pair to fit my wide, wide feet.

Turtlenecks: I used to wear them before realizing they were style suicide on my very average neck and ridonculous chest. So sad...there are days here when they're the only item of clothing with any appeal at all!

I loved wearing a kilt in 1964-5. It's interesting how trends surface and disappear.
I wish I could wear wrap tops and dresses and heels higher than 2.5 inches.

I would wear a kilt - love how it's paired with those flat shoes in the picture. Things that I like but won't wear:
- pretty but uncomfortable shoes
- short shorts
- many dresses as they just don't flatter my body
- most non-pencil skirts

I honestly feel like I can't wear most trends... but I know it's all in my head.

I wish I could wear oxfords, but my feet are bigger than some men's feet.

And this isn't even a trend - I LOVE the look of boots over skinnies, but I feel ridiculously insecure when I attempt this look. I feel it makes me look extremely bottom heavy.

I also wish I could wear white pants. But... again, the bottom heavy thing scares me. I don't want to look like I'm all thighs.

I want to wear platform high-heeled utility boots like these ones and stomp around in them all winter! Preferably with a wool sheath dress.

But then everyone would stare at me even more.

I wish I could tuck my shirt in and wear a belt. I am quite short waisted and it looks awful, even though I exercise a lot and am not carrying a huge amount of weight. Have to always wear my shirts out.

Its not a trend I like now but I always wanted to pull off the muslin Stevie Nicks look when I was a teenager, but my ample bosom made me look like a voluptous milk maid and everything would hang from the shoulders and the chest.

I also dont really suit double breasted coats...but think they are lovely.

Oh, Sally, you remnded me. I wish I could wear wide statement belts. Actually I just really wish I could wear any belts without having to consider every minor fluctuation in my weight and bloatiness throughout the day. I have to say I still don't fully embrace belts, 6 months after Angue hogtied me in one. I have to go into wearing them fully aware that I will not be comfortable at some point in the day, which usually means I leave them off.

Skinny jeans tucked into boots = stumpy legs for me. I know I should never say never, but for this I'd only do it 2 days after never.

Marianna, you won the TJ Maxx competition with a "jeans tucked into boots" outfit. And that was by an impartial judge! You rock the look.

@ everyone, please TRY the trends you think you can't wear and lets try to make them wearable in some way. I'm not promising a slam dunk, but there are ways to make things work.

Am I the only one left cold at the thought of a Beckham/Pitt child?

Even the kilt Angie!

Am I the only one imagining an actor with the voice of Mr Beckham!

Ele, thank you for the encouragement about the kilt, if I was Scottish I would maybe try the look but I'm an English gal in Scotland so it may be perceived wrongly.

Lots of people wanting to wear short shorts and I do remember the blog post Angie.

Fi, I hope you are able to find an aviator jacket.

Julie I think if you find the most unkiltlike kilt you could get away with it. I really liked the Pringle ones for example.
Regarding the aviator jacket, I loved the Topshop you linked to me, but I hesitated and it's already sold out! I've been stalking several websites trying to find something similar. Maybe as it gets cooler they'll be more selection.

Even in a kilt, Julie. Those boys don't light my fire

russell crowe in a kilt...now there's a good lad.

*Chuckle* Angie I was referring to me in a kilt, I prefer my leading males more rugged of the Clive Owen variety

Anna, you need an aviator jacket, that is for sure.

Ugh, I don't like conventional pretty boys. I think everyone thought I was gay growing up because none of the loverboys of my teens (JTT, Andrew Keagan...those sorts of guys) did anything for me. I have never found Brad Pitt even remotely attractive. I just don't get it. Then again, I am very selective and a bit eccentric in my choices...

However, I do heartily enjoy the idea of men wearing skirts... I wish the Met would revive that exhibit. Sigh.

Angie, you are definitely not the only one left cold by the Beckham/Pitt idea. I find both of their faces completely uninteresting. I remember after seeing Brad Pitt for the first time in Thelma & Louise, I was shocked that he became such a matinee idol. I still don't get it.

EDIT: Maya, no pretty boys? <cough> Jared <cough> Leto?

Now we're taking bj1111.

Oh! Sorry Julie! Of course you can wear a kilt! You'd rock the look with your Office booties. Sans the Aunt Mildred cardigan though.

Haha, what have I started... Julie, your thread has devolved somewhat

Neither Becks nor Brad is really my type either (I'm not so into blonde men), but I stand by my initial statement- the Scottish lad in question was a definite looker. The accent and charm might have had something to do with it, though.

Oh, and Jared Leto is so pretty! Tsk, Maya.

Julie, how about incorporating the tartan in a different style of skirt? Like a shorter skirt rather than pleated kilt? Just make sure you choose the right clan and can live with the feedback!

I also think that Jared Leto is conventionally pretty. You *do* like pretty boys, Maya!

Ele, I have no doubt that the bloke is question was a MUCH better hybrid in person :0)

I said CONVENTIONAL pretty boys. I don't think JL is conventional at all (well, some times more than others, but I prefer when he's not).

I can't do the strong shoulder thing, either! I already fight the feeling that I look like a football player! Thought I couldn't do leggings, but am warming up to that. I thought I was never destined to have a moto jacket, but found the perfect fit at the Rack this summer, dying to wear it!

I don't think I will ever be early to wear a trend, not enough confidence, I suppose, but seeing eveyone here post their pictures, helps me get the courage. Thank God for Angie and YLF!

I'm artic about a Becks/Pitt love child. Then again I was Team Aniston.

I said I loved the super tight bandage dresses but my hips wouldn't...well they did. I tried one on at N.Rack this morning and I loved it. You did notice my hips but in a very va-va-voom kind of way. I wasn't able to take pictures and didn't buy the dress (the neckline was wrong) but I am now on a hunt for a great (and affordable) bandage dress and a place to wear it.

It was this dress in women's and shades of purple: http://www1.bloomingdales.com/.....sn_results

Yay for taking the leap, FiestyWife

And I tucked my shirt into my skirt waistband today....and it looked okay. It must have something to do with where the waistband sits (and jeans are harder than skirts and dress pants for some reason) .....will have to investigate this.
