This had nothing to do with the fire that had been raging through my area, but a fire hit my apartment tonight (yesterday? Thursday). Nobody was home- we are all safe and so are the cats. The rest is just stuff, and can be replaced.
The fire started in the field next to my apartments (probably by a truck driving over brush), went through the neighbor behind me, incinerated my back fence, patio furniture and plants, shattered my slider and burned through my attic. The fire damage is all in the attic/roof and they had to pull all of the ceilings down to get to it. There's extensive water/smoke damage throughout the apartment. They will likely have to tear most of the building down (my next door neighbor that shares a wall was also hit) and rebuild, re-wire, etc. It's definitely not liveable- no power/water/gas, and probably won't be for months. They cut a hole in the roof and it's still dripping in spots. I was able to get in and grab clothes, toiletries, etc. Will probably be going back for whatever else I can salvage tomorrow. The apartment manager said they have an open apartment in a neighboring city so I am hoping they get me into that. In the meantime, I am thankful that nobody was hurt and that I do have renters insurance. I'm also stressed out because I start back to school Monday and signed up for three classes which is the most I've taken. I'm also really sad because I loved my little apartment and worked really hard to make it a comfortable home. I'm at my parents for the night at least, my BF went to his daughters and my Kiddo already had sleepover plans for the whole weekend so we just kept those. It feels wrong to be scattered at a time like this, but you do what you have to do!
