Anyone seen "The September Issue"?

Apparently it was Fashion Day at my house today. Too hot to be out and about, so I watched The September Issue, a documentary about Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington at Vogue.

An interesting thing: Anna Wintour is a fan of color. I don't think she was filmed in a single black outfit -- though she was filmed jettisoning a number of photos of black clothing from the magazine. I found the whole photography-as-art aspect of it compelling enough that after it ended, I subscribed to Vogue, even though I'm not usually a big fan of high fashion.

Has anyone else seen this film? What did you think?

I put this on my Netflix list after MaryK mentioned enjoying it. Will check it out next week after I recover from this week's Harry Potter marathon.

LOL, I just posted a thread about this film a couple of days ago! I LOVED it! And yes, I loved all of Anna's colorful outfits and would happily wear any of them!

Another thing that was interesting to me was that although the movie was made in the spring/summer of 2007, many of the clothing seen on the "cast members" and in the pages of the magazine looked very current here in 2011!

OF COURSE. I adore Anna Wintour. She does not like black at all. She has the most perfect bob of all time. The relationship between her and Grace is special.

High five back at you, Beth. I had to travel to DC yesterday to present for a work-related event, so today was purely sybaritic. It may have started with a trip the Rack, and after The September Issue, I may have watched The Devil Wears Prada.

MaryK -- how did I miss that thread? Was the film one of your recuperation treats?

Angie -- I would have guessed that you'd seen this, and that you would adore Anna, though her somewhat forbidding demeanor is so different from your own.

I watched it last night after seeing MaryK's thread. I just loved hearing all of their personal stories and watching Grace work. I loved how the film was both fun and thought provoking.

I loved the movie and I must confess Anna Wintour is one of my style icons! I found the movie very eye opening and what an amazing relationship Anna and Grace have.

Loved it and Grace is the most interesting and excellent stylist and creative director I have ever seen. I was blown away by her shoots and
I subscribe to Vogue for that very reason. Anna was sad to me in some ways- but I adored Grace and even loved her casual style,
I have seen it twice!

Oh this makes me want to see it again! I loved watching this which was a surprise. That it was about the relationship between these two women who must collaborate was SO interesting...and the fact that they are not "young" in societies terms was even better. Both wise in different ways. I thought it was such a well done documentary.

I was fascinated by how Anna is so perfectly put together while Grace is un-made-up, un-coiffed, and clad in head-to-toe black. That seemed to be a pattern among the women in that world -- a surprising number of them appear to have opted out of actually wearing the clothes they're so involved with every day.

BTW, in addition to the colorblocking and Breton striped sweater, add the lovely Ikat print dress of Anna's to her outfits that would look perfectly fresh and chic even four years later! And that AMAZING brown dotted Chanel suit with fur trim. ^swoon^

Jonesy, I'm doing okay. I still don't look very human, though -- lots of swelling although the bruising isn't bad at all.

Today I'm going to watch "Valentino: The Last Emperor" on tarzy's recommendation! Gotta love the streaming Netflix on the big TV in the Woman Cave! LOL

Too funny, MaryK -- I put that on my instant queue as well and was debating whether to watch it today. SO is away in London and is encouraging me to put my feet up, order takeout, and watch movies, which sounds like good advice to me.

Let's see -- it's either Valentino: The Last Emperor, or The Hurt Locker...

This movie made me fall in love with Vogue again! I adored the relationship between Anna and Grace. Anna is a fascinating lady and true icon in my eyes.

April -- no "Hurt Locker" for me -- my son is in his LAST DAY of USMC boot camp (he should be a Marine by this time tomorrow) and "The Hurt Locker" hits a little too close to home for this mom right now!

I'm also watching this interesting documentary called "Seamless," about a competition for young fashion designers sponsored by Vogue. Some of the characters from "The September Issue," including Anna Wintour, appear in it!

Like I mentioned in MaryK's post, I LOVED this documentary and bought it as soon as it came out on DVD. Grace Coddington is pure genius - and I loved learning and observing the relationship between her and Anna. Such different women - but you could really feel the connection between the two of them. I also found myself feeling compassion for Anna and the pressure from her family to be "successful." Compared to the rest of her siblings, it appears that she is perceived as the one just didn't quite do as well (in her career) as the others . Astonishing!

It's the best of the best for the latest fashion fun AND fantasy.

I watched it too -- excellent.

I was trying to sew on some buttons while it was on and that didn't work so well when Italian was being spoken since I couldn't sew and read the titles. At one point I realized I could understand what they were saying and thought for a second that I had miraculously developed the ability to speak Italian, but quickly realized they were speaking French. D'oh.

I'm with greenglove and a few others: to me the absolute gem of The September Issue, which I could not have loved more, was Grace Coddington. My BF and I became rather obsessed with her after seeing this movie--I love her demeanor, her way of dealing with Anna but, mainly, her artistic vision. What a true genius! And her personal story is fascinating: she herself was a promising model until a crippling car accident left her disfigured.
I also had the enormous privilege to meet Grace last year and she could not have been more humble, lovely and radiant in person. I was absolutely starstruck and could barely form a few sentences. I'll see if I can dig up and scan the picture of us that we had taken together...

If anyone hasn't had enough of fashion films, I also saw most of one called Picture Me, which is a homemade documentary (literally, boyfriend with a videocamera) about a young model who becomes quite successful and does the big London/Paris/Milan runway shows. You'll see some of the usual fashion suspects, including Karl L.

I didn't love it because I'm not fascinated by models, but if you're fascinated by models, this would be a good choice.
