Anyone have experience with second degree burns? ETA DD is going to be ok!!

On the weekend we were on one of our two annual camping trips and my 7 yo daughter tripped and fell into the fire pit, where the fire was out but there were still very hot embers. She got 2nd degree burns on her left palm.

She's been seen by the ER doctors twice in the local hospital and this morning we took her to the ER at Sick Kids for a follow up. She's been referred to Plastics and our appointment is tomorrow morning.

I have no experience with severe burns. My usual googling, research self is having a hard time with some of the visuals and the stories I have found online so feel unable to dig too deep. Just wondering if anyone has any experience, what to expect, maybe what to ask at the appointment tomorrow. TIA!

It was just a couple of days ago? Poor little boo.

Being a baker, burns are a hazard of the job. It's one of those professions where you stick your hand/arm out to show what you are. Like being a stone mason. Bakers' badge are burns.

I should imagine she'll be alright. The hand especially heals feels fast and well (honestly, I sliced the tip of my finger off and you wouldn't know)(well, obviously didn't go thru bone or anything).

It takes a few weeks tho, still.

Ouch! I'm so sorry! Burns suck and take a while to heal, but Rachy is right, if you take care of it, it should heal pretty well.

I know with 2nd degree burns on hands, feet, and face, they tell you to go to the ER/doctor, I think because it's most important to try to minimize scarring in those locations. I've only gotten them on my arm (twice, both times from cooking) and they both healed up well with no scar tissue. (I did have hyperpigmented spots on my skin where they were for a long time, but that's more my skin than a general issue, I think, and the dark spots don't affect anything functional.)

Anyway, I'm sure the doctor has told you how to care for it, but basically it's important to keep the burn clean and covered, use antibiotic ointment, and then once it stops blistering/forms a scab to keep the healing tissue well moisturized to avoid scarring (I slathered on Eucerin). And obviously try to avoid picking at it.

Oh dear. One of my DDs, when she was about that age, touched her palm on the side of a crockpot and got burned. We took her to the ER, and they took care of it. It was years ago, so I don't remember exactly what they did.

Several years ago our daughter, 9 years old at the time, spilled hot chocolate on her leg. We were sitting around a campfire on an isolated beach. After we got her pants off we noticed the skin was peeling off on her thigh. The only thing we had to cool the burn was cucumbers. I don't know if that is what helped her heal so well but it really soothed her skin at the time. I went to the local pharmacy the next day and they recommended a band aid to cover the burn to prevent infection. Once it healed over a bit we tried to give it periods of open air. She had a dark patch on her leg for a long time but now it is pretty much gone. We never did take her in to the doctor because she didn't show any signs of infection and had no complaints.
I have also heard that a raw potato is good on burns but I'm not sure if that is just the initial wound or also to sooth it later on.
I hope you find good help for your daughter! It sounds painful.

Thanks for your replies ladies. It helps to know that she will get better and have little or no scarring. We're headed to the Plastics department at Sick Kids in about a half hour. Wish us luck!

Would aloe vera help? Also, when I got a really bad sunburn, my mom put vinegar and baking soda in the bath water. That helped soothe the burn.

Ouch! I burned the inside of my forearm very badly once but it was long ago and under difficult circumstances that did not include good medical care so I'm glad to hear that you're treating it with a doctor's advice.

I would do exactly what they tell you to do, ask questions until you have the answers, and NOT implement advice from other sources, friends, family, internet etc., until you've checked it with the doctor. Any open wound like that can develop secondary problems that can be worse than the original issue.

I got a second-degree burn on the heel of my hand while transferring a hot pan from the oven. It was about 1.5 inches across. Took a long time to heal (I'm a slow healer for some reason) -- like about 7-8 weeks. I never saw a doctor. Right away I ran cool water over it for several minutes. It developed a couple of large blisters, which I did NOT puncture. I covered the wound and let the blisters eventually pop on their own (took about 8-10 days). I kept the wound covered and it did develop a deep scab that finally fell off. I treated it occ with aloe. I would probably be more careful if it had happened to a child but for me, I just watched it to be sure it didn't get infected. I hope your daughter has a complete and uneventful recovery. I think the most important thing is time and infection watch.

Thanks for your wisdom and kind messages. She's got another hospital visit Friday morning where they'll give her mild sedation so that they can attend to the burn. I think it's going to be a long road ...

Poor thing! Best wishes for her recovery. She's in good hands, I imagine. Remember that kids are resilient (moms less so!).

Friday's hospital visit was tough. The doctor let us know that parts of the burn are very deep (it was his first time seeing it). She has a new dressing on with a special tube so I can irrigate it 3 times a day. He wants to reserve judgement until our next appointment Friday. I fear she'll need a skin graft but won't know more until then.

Any spare good wishes for my sweet girl would be greatly appreciated.

I'm so sorry your daughter suffered such a terrible burn. A young neighbor of ours (20ish) was goofing around and fell in the fire pit. He suffered terrible burns on his legs. He had been very active, playing competitive soccer, skiing, and rock climbing. His parents had to drop everything and drive to his bedside. Once he was released from the hospital, his mother stayed and helped with his burn care. It was a month or two. It's been a couple years and he's back to his old active self. He does have scars on his legs, but functionally, he didn't lose anything.

Thank you so much for your kind wishes! We took her back to the burn unit today where they put her under again to check, wash and rebandage her burn. We were told that it was healing well and there will be no need for surgery. To say we're relieved would be putting it mildly!
