Mackintosh of Ireland - too short?

Came across this brand at 50% off, which just brings it into the range of what I'd wanted to pay. I like the "bronze" color, and it says it is waterproof and breathable. I know Angie suggested I go shorter, but is this too short? I don't know the model's height, but she is a UK8 wearing XS. If you know the brand, are they super heavy?

I have not heard of it, but retail in my area is pretty sparse. Some fabulous lady here has heard of it, I hope.

Well, that looks right up your alley! Not familiar with the company but the name makes it sound steadfast and reliable somehow. Maybe because it sounds like "Pringles of Scotland".

Found it on a couple other sites, and the longer ones are like $700. Would probably be way better quality than I am used to...

What do you guys think of the length? I can't decide if it looks like it's more of a jacket length or real coat length. It is longer than the model's dress, but her dress is also short. If it fit, would it be a style step up from the Nau?

It seems like it is going back toward the traditional trench direction... but in a fun color. Is that what you are wanting or is that the reason the other ones from last year are up for sale? FWIW, to me the nau read more sport and casual fun but is a still put together not totally gear way.

ETA: For at least the one item i looks at the size chart showed lengths, about 90-91 cm for XS, SM

The other ones were purged for breathability issues - every time I wore them, I ended up sticky because the lining did not breath. I still really like the traditional trench look, but it is hard to find in a lightweight, breathable/wicking, affordable construction.

*smacks forehead* Sarah, you're a genius. Don't ask me why I dismissed the sizing charts simply because they didn't have the same style on offer...

Ok, clicking on the sizing chart of the one with most similar proportions, a small is only 80cm long, making it 3" longer than the orchid trench below and 2.5" shorter than the rust one. Hm, now I'm thinking it'll be too short for rain.

I don't know about the brand but that is one cute coat. I actually really like the shorter length.

Well, you said in a previous thread that rain there wasn't too bad and you more wanted an on the go jacket that could handle a shower, right? that breathability and light weight was the most important thing?

I keep getting confused because I think what I think of as a raincoat and what you are thinking of are two different animals

I think the mid leg length would be sufficient, north carolina rain usually isnt that cold and i dont mind if my thighs get wet for the most part....

any idea if the coat is as wicking as claimed (online reviews etc?) I would htink a UK company makes a good rain coat though...

There are scant reviews, but it is a breathable membrane between two layers of cotton... I guess the proof would be in the pudding, because there are scant reviews for this brand out there. :T

My two cents - for me, the hassles and cost of ordering overseas & returning if necessary would put me off an unknown item. There are so many stores right here with great brands - have you been to the Burberry store in CC and tried things on? (I have not, but it's on my list of things to do.) I just hate to spend money on shipping when it could go towards buying a better quality item.

Yeah, that is the sticking point, Tara. Paying those fees to possibly be left with nothing to show rubs me the wrong way, but there aren't tons of items here that satisfy my criteria.

I *wish* I could even consider Burberry! I might have thought about it, but they don't make any mention of using tech/breathable fabric, and they do line in polyester. And then there is the price... even on Ebay, it seems like they only come down this low if used, stained, and non-returnable.

Sounds like you're looking for a functional jacket (not sure if it's for wandering in rain or exercise)?

Have you looked at Altrec's site? Lots of variations and lengths. Personally for walking in heavy rain or light hiking I like closer to knee-length, for hiking a soft shell where I can tie the sleeves around me if I heat up or it stops raining.

Thanks, Vix! I might just be ready to give up at this point, though. I've been to all the major gear brand sites I know of, plus a few that were suggested to me on another thread, plus hours of 'trolling the net. I don't know that what I want even exists!

The purpose is for speed walking after DH through urban streets. So I want it to be highly breathable to keep up with his speediness, nice enough to look sharp in LA, and light enough to carry in my bag or on my arm if the sun freakishly shows its face.

So far the closest contender is the Nau in #1. Breathable, packable, and eh... sort of sharp. But Angie thinks it is too long, and while it's sharp for gear it's not like I look at the pics and think wow. I also tried the longer version of the Maya, in 2, it is breathable and has a very nice classic look, but it is not packable and the color was bad. Yarg...

Hmmm, that is asking a lot -- IME super-packable and sharp are generally not found in one package.

How long is the Nau at center back, and what's idealish if that's too long?

The Merrell Urbaine (#1 in my post) is 34" from CB and a linen-like texture, which seemed interesting to me; if you're not set on a belt and the length is good it has the potential to look quite sleek.

Disclaimer: I love my single-breasted raincoat -- though it's needing to be put to pasture after 5 million days of use and actually isn't that breathable -- but getting a good fit in the shoulders was absolutely necessary for it to look anything close to sharp. The Nau looks a little big on you there -- is it the smallest you can go? If length is the problem just get it hemmed.

The Maya: Short I only chose because it seemed more up your alley than a solid, which I agree is a dud due to color and overall conservative vibe. If you like the plaid maybe someone else has it in the longer length for the right price.

I think both the Nau and the Maya/TNF look great on you and that you should give function an edge on this one. You are looking for rain "gear" after all -- I wouldn't be too afraid of going for utility since as you say this is for fast walking and packability.

I agree with Tara that, although the Irish Mack sounds like a great idea, the shipping, returns, customs etc would be a huge pain. And it looks short.

Would alterations be an option for the Nau?

Thanks, I need all the luck I can get, lol. You are right I am asking a lot out of one garment. I have been sizing up for layering... both the Nau and North Face can fit a thick fleece under. I also fit the XS Nau, but barely. No room for even a sweater, especially at the hips.

Bah, my practical side and my stylish side are really at war here - one says stay dry and comfy at all costs, and the other says hold out for an amazing look at all costs.

Do you have a raincoat now? If you have something that works, for now, then you should just hold out for what you really want. Or at least take more time looking for it even if the final result may be one of compromise.

Well, I got fed up and sold them all. I would not have worn them, anyway, because of how sticky they made me, just grossed me out one too many times. I suppose I have put water protectant on my suede trench, but I don't think I want it to be my raincoat.

ETA: you do make a good point though. If I can get through spring without one, I could possibly wait and see what shakes loose next year. I guess I am afraid that they will never make what I want... the Nau was like a needle in the haystack with the trench collar , wicking, and packability.

After looking for you I'm feeling a little despair for myself (I've been looking for a replacement sporadically IRL and online).

Even the ones I thought I liked I now hate after seeing them on other models etc -- can't decide if that's because the coats are wrong for the models or if they're all just sacks!

The olive-y shade of the Nau is both nice on you and good with your wardrobe. I'll again encourage hemming it if you love everything about it except for the length. I see CocoLion agrees.

I don't mean to push you into something given the price, but as one of the forum PNWerners I see a LOT of raincoats and sad to say most are pretty...sad. Needing the full meal deal (breathable, closable collar, detachable hood, etc) really decreases the style factor.

Vix, I think you have knocked some sense into me. There I was, sifting through WPB fabric wholesale websites, wondering if I could find an affordable trench coat seamstress... and it hit me. I purged 6 - 6!! - non-functional coats this year, none of which had more than 2 good functional qualities at the same time. And the Nau is waterproof, a good color, breathable, lightweight, packable, and wicking.

IF someday, I do find a coat that is all those things *and* a classic trench, I will still have room for it in the closet. If I happen to find it before the next rainy season - great, I can still return the Nau... but if not no big deal. I don't need to capture this sartorial hippogriff right. this. instant. It might take years to find!
