Analyzing a Rain Boot Outfit that Doesn't Work - Changes Made

I usually take my outfit photos at the end of the workday, but I am glad I took this one before leaving the house. It is pouring rain out so I was attempting to use Jessica Quirk's rainboot look as an inspiration, but I don't think it worked. Not sure why, but my thoughts are:
1. The skinnies are now slouchy skinnies and look dorky with the rainboots.
2. The shirt worn as a jacket is dorky.
3. I am dorky.
4. All of the above

It's an extremely casual day at work - students are here only for exams, and I don't have to proctor today, so it's a grading and paperwork day for me.

Anywho, I changed footwear and am wearing my black and plaid duck shoes. I'll update with a pic of that later. It all still looks dorky, and now I squeak when I walk up and down the halls!

Striped top - Gap, green skinnies - Macy's, boots - Marshall's or TJ Maxx

End of Day Edit (photo 3): I took Thistle's suggestion and tried a bolder striped top and Angie's suggestion for a more structured jacket. The shirt is all wrinkled and my hair is a mess (got caught in the rain), but the work day is over so this is for next time. Better?

The only thing that strikes me as truly different, and I looked three times, is the sweater. I wonder if the larger stripes create different proportion.

I see no issues with the jeans, boots or jacket. The big difference, to my eye, is the bold graphic of her stripes, where yours are far more subtle.

To my eye, the pants and boots are great, striped shirt works, it's the length of the dark overshirt. It should be longer or maybe even shorter.

I think it looked fine but maybe like Thistle said the bolder top would work better.

I think the stripes on your tee suit you as does the green/white/black combo. The shirt might look cuter with the collar popped.
I'm sorry you didn't feel right - maybe it is just one of those low days when no matter what, one feels out of sorts.

I think it's the skinny jeans as you mentioned, they'd need to be skin tight, a longer jumper and bigger stripes as mentioned by Thistle, other than that, we're really only nitpicking aren't we, I think the outfit is very close to the inspiration picture.

I too think the key is that the pants in this look have to be pretty skintight. My guess is that it's needed to combat the slouchy ankles that all traditional rainboots seem to have.

FWIW, I hardly ever wear my actual galoshes. My patent, zip-up Naots are much more fitted in the ankle and completely waterproof anyway, plus they are just overall much easier to style. I'm a big fan of patent leather for rainy days!

As for the hoodie/tee/jeans/sneaker/backpack wearing peanut gallery - I wouldn't hold that fashion and style opinion in high regard!

I had to look several times to see what was different between your outfit and the inspiration photo. I think you did a good job of recreating the original outfit and look great. If I was going to nitpick, it would be that the skinny jeans aren't quite skinny enough. However, that is really being picky as I think your outfit is great.
