An outfit with no neutrals, then one with no colours.

Hello all,

I experimented with an outfit containing 0 nuetrals to ground it. Personally I like how it looks- but I’m interested to hear other people’s thoughts.
Then outfit number two.... is ENTIRELY nuetrals! I’m counting light chambray as a neutral. I tried to liven it up with texture, the shiny bits and funky shoes and a lip colour. Lol. Just experimenting like the mad hatter here. All honest feedback appreciated. Anyone have a preference for either look?

Carla: thanks- you’re extremely kind. Those pants are a loose fit linen-cotton blend. They aren’t a paper bag waist but they kind of give that effect.

Well Jussie I'm more of a colour person as you may see from my posts. So I prefer pic 1- I feel the black background of the floral skirt does help to ground it. It's a personality thing for me to prefer 1, so please bear that in mind.

Jenni NZ: thanks for your reply! Yes, you and I are both colour people :). Thing is, I know the floral skirt looks like it’s on a black background but it’s actually a blue background.

As a mainly neutrals person, I was not expecting to like the first outfit (so I had to check out this post lol), but in fact, I LOVE IT!!!
The second one looks good too. I wouldn't have though to pair those colors together but they look good.

Since you're asking for honest feedback - I would consider having the waist on the chambray shirt taken in a little. I like the overall relaxed look, but I think it would look better with the tucked in if there were a bit less fabric.

I always struggle with this too for my shirts as well. I decided last week to bite the bullet and have all of my items I plan on tucking in, taken-in in 2019.

Luc3: thanks for your helpful feedback! Glad to know you like the coloured outfit. Also, I agree, the chambray shirt is very boxy..... like VERY boxy.... it’s cropped though so I don’t know if it could be taken in, however it’s a great idea that I will keep in mind in the future. Thanks

I am also more of a neutrals person, and I really like the colour combination of toffee and chambray in #2. However, my preference is for outfit #1. The floral skirt is so pretty! I would probably have paired it with a neutral top, maybe in cream, but the yellow looks great on you!

Good experiments! Love them both, but especially 1! You can wear both neutrals and colours and the yellow is fab.

as someone who considers olive a color....i really like the non neutral outfit, a lot although, IMO the skirt is grounded in a neutral, but i get your point....not as much of a fan of the all neutral outfit, but its not because of the colors or lack of them, its more because i don't love that top with those pants...if you really want to try an all neutral outfit, i'd love to see those pants with an creamy or off white top....

I love 1. The skirt is lovely. 2 is nice, too, but I think blue is a color.

IMHO, the way the solid yellow is used here, it is a neutral. So there. And I love it.

It's funny how these words mean different things to different people. On your last post about no neutrals, I replied that in my book, navy is a neutral. Here again, the skirt in the first pic looks to me as if it has a neutral background that grounds it. I also like that the yellow ties the top and bottom together clearly and makes the whole thing look so pulled together and snappy. The second outfit is fine, but doesn't really catch my eye or have much energy, imo.

They both look great, although I would say the blue serves a bit like a neutral in the first and a color in the second. But who cares?

Both are lovely and good inspiration of how to wear casual summer clothing in a very stylish way. #1 is my favourite, but like Jenni, I am also a colour person.

I was going to say exactly what Shevia said. Blue seems to play for both teams, depending on what it is paired with. That's the effect it has on me, too.

Jussie, I think you are extremely lucky and also clever at outfit creation. First, you are so pretty! And second, the colours (and neutrals) you have chosen here all work with your natural colouring so well. So that both outfits work out. I like both but they have a different effect. In #1 you appear playful, energetic, and feminine. #2 is a bit quieter and because it is so cohesive with your natural colouring it feels "integrated" and while obviously casual, it has a certain gravitas to it while retaining a playful feel.

In short, you can play for both teams, too, just like that neutral or is it a colour, blue!

Jessikams: thanks :). I do feel a bit more “me” in colours but I had enough embellishment in the neutral outfit to feel ok in it. How fun is outfit creation??

Suz: thank you for your wise reply. “Gravitas” is a fantastic word and you are absolutely right, neutral outfits can give a person a certain gravitas. I don’t have a lot of gravitas naturally, but I have been known to apply some fake gravitas with my job interview outfit which is totally neutral ;).
I also find it endlessly fascinating how colours do change depending on what other colours they are next to..

Agreeing with em that the yellow is your "neutral" in #1! I find yellow in general much more of a neutral than blue. Zyla calls the blues the "dramatic" colors, probably because theyre opposite from skin color.
