An Ode to the Bootcuts! (Pic Heavy and Long)

After I read a question by Tricia on whether to quit wearing bootcuts because she did not wish to wear figure fitting tops any more, I wondered why our thoughts differed so much when I actually think bootcuts are the most versatile type of jeans ever! So I decided to dig up the internet and YLF and find inspiration to wear the bootcuts with different styles of tops. So, here's a little experiment I did while DSs where taking a nap. I have included my fails as well because I really wanted to know why something that feels good in my head doesn't actually look right. I am wearing a high waist bootcut, so tucking is a challenge with my short waist.

I have kept my shoes constant in many pics and I haven't really accessorized. So they are all pretty simple and basic outfits just to work proportions.

1) With a peplum top
2) With a tunic length top and shorter jacket
3) Same as 2 - with belt added for some waist definition
4) With a fluid banded top
5) With a turtle neck and knit jacket (A fail for me, because the turtle neck and the collar of jacket together made me look like I had no neck!)
6) With hi-low top and drapey vest
7) With hi low fluid sweater
8) With cropped top (FAIL! My hips and tummy look huge! I guess I shouldn't have tucked)
9) With a simple tank and long cardigan
10) Sorry you need sunglasses for this one o_O! With simple cami and shorter cardigan.
11) Back details of outfit 10
12) With Sparkly top and blazer
13) With simple tunic shirt (Not sure if the proportions work)
14) With the fur vest (Fail. I don't like the way it looks buttoned. Should have tried the vest un-buttoned)

So which look is your favorite and which one is a total fail in your books? And does this convince you that bootcuts are just about as versatile as any other jeans cut can get? I am a big girl and I can totally take criticism So please feel free! Thanks for stopping by!

ETA - Sorry for the awkward poses! You get tired posing after a few shots! Also please ignore PPL! Those bootcuts are perfect for my black pumps and its either too short or too long for everything else in my shoe closet! I so want wedge sneakers now

2, 6, & 12 are my favorites. But I really liked them all. You wear a peplum beautifully!! Great outfits and ideas!!

I love 2 and 6. I think they all work except for 3 (the proportions look weird with the belt) and 9-11 (even with your long legs, the pants look better with heels - they don't fall gracefully over sneakers).

My only comment is that I think your particular jeans are too long for sneakers. That is not to say that they wouldn't work, if they were an inch shorter. I also have a pair, and are flat shoe length. I like them. And I know it's the only leg style my BF wears.. she's tall and thin, and finds them the most flattering. Her legs look rediculous in skinnies.

1, 6, and 12 are my favorites. Love that you did this. I will definitely use it as I work on finding new formulas for my own outfits.

Aaah ... I should have mentioned "Please ignore PPL" Those bootcuts only work for my black pumps. And with everything else it is either too short or too long! Just wanted to add a few sneaker looks. Could you imagine them with wedge sneakers or with shorter hem on the jeans?

Well done! I agree that bootcuts are really versatile and flattering, thanks for proving it here. No. 2 really jumps out to me as a favorite.

I think 14 is great, but would unbutton the highest closure(s) and just leave it open or close only the one at or just below the bust.

You do look great in boot cuts! And aren't these self-experiments time consuming but helpful? I did something similar with straights and skinnies a couple of years ago (comparing cuts and styles with proportions) and I found it so enlightening.

My favourites here are 2 and 6, like many others, but I also have a soft spot for #4. As someone who does not have your enviably long legs, I have a high tolerance for looks that showcase long legs. If I can't enjoy it on myself, I might as well enjoy it on others, right?

Bootcuts work well on you in part because of your personal proportions. I think they can be flattering to many, but they're especially great when a woman has long legs. These ones don't have an exaggerated boot flare, either, so they are possibly easier to wear than some.

Thank you all for your observations and wisdom! Suz, I definitely do not imply versatile as *suits all and flatters all* instead versatile as *just like my skinny jeans!* Just thought would clarify that!

And I definitely doubt I have legs *that* long, could be the camera angle! I take my pictures at hip bone height because that's how high my dresser is and I don't have a tripod yet! The pictures make me look like I am 5'9 when I am actually just bordering 5'4

Could you gals also point out your least favorite outfits please? It would be very helpful for me! Sorry for being so demanding!

You've definitely made your case! I love #1,2,4. Well ok I am going to stop there because I think they all work. I want the vest in #6 too!

All fabulous. Nothing is remotely a fail. At all. You have a great sense of style.

I tend to like bootcuts looooooong, so to my eye they are a little short with the black heels. I love the length with the sneakers actually. #6 and #9 are my faves. Well done indeed.

I think you look good in all of them, if a bit headless! ;D That being said, since you asked, #3 is my least favourite because I think the belt's a little high. That jacket is cut so well that I actually think your waist looks smaller in #2. #5 doesn't seem as good as a lot of the others either, although I can't say exactly why. And in #13 the belt looks a little thin and lost compared to the tunic. If you wanted to belt that (and I don't think you need to since the shirt is quite form fitting), maybe try a wider one?

All of the others are so awesome I can't pick a favourite! #8 is not a fail and you don't look huge! I bet #14 would be awesome w the vest unbuttoned.

Shevia - That vest is from Newlook and it was on 50% discount (a mere 15$!). The same one with sleeves was in one of Angie's ensembles (the pencil skirt and leather jacket one) and that's how I found it

Angie - I am very humbled by your comment about my style (which I owe to YLF!)! Also, I thought the jeans were PPL for the black pumps! Oh dear! But that also means I can try these over my lower heels Glad you liked them over the sneaks, though

Thanks E! That's pretty much exactly what I wanted!! I think now I know how I could possibly make them look better. I should replace the turtle neck with a v/crew neck tee or top in no 5, to help elongate my short neck.

Wouldn't have thought No 3 was a fail! But many have found that weird, so I'll stick to not belting the top. No 13 did feel a bit odd and now I know why! You guys are just brilliant!

Well, this is a great visual for sure. And you wear bootcuts so well! I wish I could get that much accomplished. I am not anti-bootcut but just don't find them that versatile for me. Perhaps with the new volume on volume love I should retry them with my voluminous sweaters and see if they work in a modern way now. Honestly, the biggest issue is dragging hems in the snow!

I love 2, 4, and 6! The vest is #6 is really cool.

Honestly I think these are all good, and you wear bootcuts very well. I am not crazy about 3 and 13, but I'm pretty sure that's just because I don't really like the look of waist belts in general.

What a nice exercise Neel! I am inspired to do this too but not with bootcuts - coz I am 5 nothing! They look great on you though! I like ALL of the styles and really dont think any of them fail at all! My Fav is #1 and # 6 (That peplum and bootcut is really cool) In fact I like #8 quite a bit! But I totally understand you feeling not so comfortable about the tummy look - I am fussy about that too - even If I am the only one who can see anything on me!

My favorites are 1 and 9. My least favorites are 2 and 5 (since you asked). I think 2 makes you look wide, which you obviously are not. The color combo is the problem in 5. Fun exercise.

I think what contributes to your fab looks here is that your bootcuts fit you very well. What I've noticed when I've been out and about is that way too many women wear their bootcuts a size or two too big so that they sag and bag instead of looking sleek. Their bootcuts aren't dark like yours and they seem to give off the vibe that the wearer has given up. Gives bootcuts a bad name.

I love bootcuts, so thanks! I think they all look great. I"m not too fond of 5, but that is because I'm not fond of that kind of jacket, not because of the pants.

Thanks for doing this. I admit I feel a little defensive when people say bootcuts look frumpy. They so do not!

I LOVE #12! I keep coming back to this post to look at it. I think all the looks are great, especially since it looks like a slim bootcut rather than a flare. This post made me remember the forgotten bootcuts in my closet that I think are cut similarly to yours. They're very dark so I'd be able to dress them up with a shiny top like the one you have in #12.

Neel, quite honestly, I have to say that no. 3 was my favorite, by far! Isn't that funny? Everyone else seemed to like that one least. Ha ha. I am short too (5'2"); maybe that has something to do with it!

My other faves were 1, 6, 7, 8, and 13. Least fave: 2, 5.

For what it's worth, I am just starting to experiment with bootcuts, and I don't like them all the way to the ground either. I like the length as it is on you, with your black pumps. I guess I (and you?) will have to march to the beat of a different drummer with regard to PPL!

This post was very helpful to me, by the way. As I branch out into bootcut territory, I've been wondering about what kind of tops to wear with them. Your pix have given me lots of ideas!

Liz - as much as I love compliments, the comments that point out my negatives are equally important and they help me improve. I did feel wide in that jacket and it took me 4-5 shots to get a pic that didn't make me look humungous!! The cut of the jacket is such I guess. It didn't make me look like this when I bought it! It could be the breezy top too. I think I will post a separate thread for help on that jacket. I cannot return it anymore and it is quite pricey. I better make it work lol!

Oh and I wouldn't call any of them a fail, I just don't love the belted tops.
