One trend I have noticed on YLF is a desire to spend as little as possible on an item - or more specifically, to dismiss or agonize over certain items based on price. To be honest, this approach baffles me. I certainly do like a deal, and I do buy most of my items secondhand, from sample sales, clearance sites, or on sale. And I certainly agree that some items are priced more than I would (or, really, could!) pay for them.
But. . . to be honest, I *never* balk at something because of a high price tag. Some items seem innately worth it to me in terms of 1) what I can do with them, 2) how they are made and what they are made of, 3) how special and unique they are and 4) how they feel on my body and when I touch them. It's not much to do with a label and everything to do with craft and hand feel.
I definitely don't make pots of money, and I've certainly never skipped blithely down the aisles at Chanel. (Wouldn't that be fun!) But it does seem to me that refusing to consider a high-priced item just because of the price is just as limiting as refusing to consider a tshirt at Target because it's Target. It's one thing to say, I cannot afford that, or, I wouldn't get my money's worth from that because of X, Y, or Z. It's another to ignore a whole swath of the clothing spectrum.
Maybe I am turning European in my advancing old age? It's not just that I will pay for quality. It's more, I think quality is worth money, even if I didn't get the absolute best possible price for it. Does that make sense?
